We'll see what happens...it is a weekend of events with BLSA and BLAA.

hey hey now... >:( don't start hating on GW Ike..that's my alma mata!!!!

Blue you'll get breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday.. eat up :D... seriously it's a meet and great put on by various Black Alums from the university... it's set up to give tips on how to brief... the pros and cons of each professor.. etc etc... same thing that you'll go over at the regular orientation..

the BLAA is great though..there's also a mid-semester event that they host to try to help out with any problems that you may have encountered during the semester.. and in November you'll have a "Mock Writing Session" which helps to better prepare for the LRW exam...

as I was telling you before Blue.. you'll get a mentor your 3L which is provided through BLAA...

I plan on coming up there for Colonial weekend in October...

On the 23rd, I'll be starting Michigna's pre-orientation program, MAP.

Apparently MAP used to stand for "Minority Access Program," but now it's just "Michigan Access Program" (IE they started letting everyone attend, not just minorities).

This orientation is 2.5 days, and starts a week before the "regular" orientation, but I think I'd have to have been crazy to pass it up.

(1) It's free.  They even put you up in a hotel for those 2.5 days if you can't move into your place yet.

(2) You get two chances to meet people and two mock lectures and two chances to sit down with professors and talk about their expectations prior to classes beginning.

(3) As a MAP participant, you continue meeting up with professors and students regularly just to make sure everyone is on the same page academically.

Like, hello?  Extra help ALL YEAR LONG just 'cause I show up early?

Sign me up twice!

(I can't believe there are people not attending...but there are!  The Assistant Dean of Students actually called me up to pitch the program to me, and I was like, "Form's already in the mail. You'd have to be crazy to pass up an opportunity like this!"  And she basically went, "Um, yeah..."  :D )

Maybe I can sneak my way into the extra help sessions you MAP participants get  ;)

I'm sorry you can't make it (I was really glad I didn't have other pressing needs already scheduled), but I don't think they, like, check badges at the door or anything...   :D

What up peeps?  First day of orientation and all I can say was it was a trip...definitely an experience...I will refrain from blasting anyone.  However we did have a "White tee" guy but he could pull it off because he had on gym shorts, flip flops and gold fronts...and I'm not even lying...other than that it was pretty boring...Oh yeah a prof. that was talking picked on a blind guy because she thought he was sleep, he was just turned sideways so he could hear her better..

You're gonna have to keep us posted about your Orientation and the pre-orientation picnic.  With all due respect to seu, wear something very casual to the picnic or you WILL be severely overdressed.  But, *&^%, I don't have to tell YOU that.  You've gone to Berkeley longer than I have.

P.S. - left you a voicemail. did ya get it?

i've bought about 3/4 of my books 3 weeks ago, mostly thru half.com, and those suckas have yet to arrive.   >:(  one of my roommates bought a book thru there and the seller just kept her money.  what i'm saying is, if you know what books you need, you should try to get them ASAP bc you never know what's gonna happen.   :-\

and btw ruskie, i wasnt being critical of what ppl were wearing just to be a pain in the ass.  it's just that some ppl took it a little too far.  its as one of the 2L's told us-- this a professional school we're attending.  ppl (fellow students, 2-3L's, and professionals w/ the ability to help make or break you) will be watching and listening to everything we say and do, dress included.

Those kinds of comments at berkeley would make people think YOU were uptight.  But, I guess it's a different culture at our school.  People wear whatever the hell they want to class, orientation, admit day, etc.  Those occasions are casual, but people dress up where it counts, i.e. interviews, firm recruitment events, cocktail parties.  There was a guy in my class who wore a suit to orientation and for the rest of the year he was known as "that prick who was trying to outdo everyone else at orientation."  In an environment where everyone else is fairly laid-back, the easiest way to make a name for yourself is to look/act uptight.  I am sure the opposite is true in more conservative schools.  I think the 1L's should just get a sense of the culture of the school and then pick out what to wear.

it's unfortunate that if a person chooses to wear a button down shirt with french cuffs and some slacks because it's outside of the norm.. they'd be labeled as uptight..

bless their hearts...

Nupe nupe nupe, seriously though, are there no 2L's or 3L's you can holler at who had your professors??

You don't wanna come out of pocket like that if you don't have to.  Save that money for something important, like long island iced teas after finals.

I just priced the books, I had to use a high figure for financial aid so I could up my scholarship. Now I need to find some cheap books.  I have some chapter brothers who graduated from my school, they are looking out for me

Ok I'.m in my apartment and I have no phone, no cable, and no internet. I can only afford one or the other. I'm leaning toward cable, just because I need espn when college football season starts. Any thoughts on which one is more important. Mind you I can get on my schools wireless network on campus, but will I need the internet for late night studies at the crib?

Cartel, make sure your school doesn't offer free dial up service . . .mine does. . . our wonderful money used for student fees put to good use. You will want to have internet access when classes are cancelled or assignments are modified . . .at my school, all of this was done online.

Good luck to all the 1Ls!!!  ;D

You are funny SMU.  In fact, you have gotten a lot funnier since you got yourself a boyfriend.

Now, my orientation went very well.  I had a good time and enjoyed myself.  They have their biggest class ever, they have 210 1Ls.  It was a week long orientation session.  It just concluded today.  I had  my first faculty meeting which lasted for 5 hours.  It looks like it is going to be a fun and exciting year.  How did everyone elses orientation go??

Our orientation was more like baptism by fire. We had 2 briefs and like 5 assignments due the first two days. And we have to read a whole freakin’ book. Then at the end of orientation they say welcome to law school and they just gave us all that to make us expect the worse, said don't worry about it cause almost no one fails, and see us at the happy hour.

Sounds like you had a good time.  I am sure that when you look back the experience will be beneficial.  I wish you the best luck this first year and throughout all three years of law school.  How did you enjoy the experience?

I didn't have orientation . . .  ;D

But I have participated in welcoming minorities to SMU at a few events this week. I will continue to do so throughout the semester, and hopefully throughout my life.  After going through the hazing of 1hell, I feel obligated to share any resources that I might have with the up and coming law students, class of 2008 and beyond.

Hi LP . . .I'm glad you think I'm funny . . . ;D :-* ;)

Well, even though you didnt have orientation for yourself, you did get a chance to participate in orientation it seems to give back and be there for support for incoming students.  I am very proud of you.  Keep up the good work.

Hi SMU....Does your boyfriend know you are blowing me kisses and winking at me??

Besides, I am going dancing by myself tonight . . . he is working so boo hoo.  :P

There is no difference-I try to tell my bf that all the time.  Whenever I go out, it always followed be a 2 hour interrogation, heated discussion, somebody getting mad at the other.
He don't trust me,  ??? WTF  >:(.
But if you do go out, have fun  :)

And I will have tons of fun . . .most of my friends have been away all summer and we are going to have a blast!!!!!   ;D

You should stay home so that you can be there when your man wants to come over.  So that you dont have fun while he is not allowed to have fun.  You can dance all you want as long as you dont dance with any guys.

lol cartel! someone is feeling a little lonely with all of those books huh?  :-* actually, i feel ya, haha.

ok, i have an orientation and first day story. orientation was nice. everyone was super sweet. we had a phenomenal speaker the first day. a black judge from virginia. the whole time he talked about how the law and lawyers are supposed to be about creating a more perfect union and having the courage to stand up for justice. he talked about growing up in virginia in the 1950's and what it means to come back to the law school and see a class that looks like ours. it was tight! then we had meetings with sort of like our first year counselors who told us about our professors and our classes and advised us on books etc. we had a bbq where i met all of the black people. all 21 of us.  :o the class is like 377. soooo, the ladies know that there were about 3 black men who weren't married. 2 who were married. and the rest were women. I spent most of the day yesterday reading, getting my school id and trying to get my room together. i finished all of the reading, went to bed on time, then woke up and dragged around getting ready. my father called me to wish me good luck on my first day. (i luv u daddy!) and then i got to class late! on the first day! isn't that sad? so, i got there and i couldn't open the door. then i had one of the career services people in the hallway try the door for me and it still didn't open, so I think I got locked out. so sad... :( hopefully i'll have better luck tomorrow...

its just you cartel. haha. you can do it, i don't think there will be fighting though. and i just discovered that the number of black men who are not married is 5. but at least one is gay, and i have no clue if the others are single. i'm sure some girls will kick game to them. others, like me, will just keep track of the number for statistical purposes and keep it moving. i think i started counting b/c one of my best-friend's said that there would be sooooo many single guys at l.s.,and i said, huh? how could that be? when in undergrad there were so few? but now i think that she might have been advocating interracial dating.  :D

“The single women in my law school are all feminist who don't need a man for anything (well except you know) and I am not a peace of meat. I think I'm going to get me a hood rat and fix her up.”

In any event good luck on your studies Faith! I wish you the best.

i'm a feminist and i like to have men around for lots of things that are not necessarily you know...like fixing shelves, giving (and receiving) back massages, talking about life. feminists are nice girls too!  :D  :D  :D oh, and i wish you the best as well!  :)
