Title: The plastic surgery thread...would you or wouldn't you?
Post by: LittleRussianPrincess, Esq. on June 27, 2005, 08:05:30 PM
What do you think about it?

Should people get it whenever they don't like something about their appearance or should it be reserved for extreme cases, i.e., recontructive surgery after breast removal, burns, etc.?

Nothing, but I do believe in plastic surgery.

I would and plan to, but none of the procedures listed above.

i've changed the poll to include "other procedure."

do you mind sharing what you might be considering?

Yeah, I could see myself doing it later on, too. I really have nothing against minor plastic surgery -- it's the scary augmentations and reshapings that leave you looking nothing like your former self that I'm bothered by.

I had lipo on my inner and outer thighs a few years ago, and it was a great decision.  No more thighs rubbing together or saddle bags hanging off.  I'm the same size I was before, I just look better in my clothes.  It really changed my whole shape.  I was more pear shaped before, and now I look slimmer.  I'd do it again in a heartbeat, but I don't need any more work done.

4 things...mastopexy, brachioplasty, belt lipectomy and thighplasty.  TMI? :-\  Well hey, since when did I care?

This probably won't be happening for a while since it could run up to 40Gs.

I would and plan to, but none of the procedures listed above.

Actually, I don't really know what any of those procedures are. English, pweese?

hehe, I did that on purpose hoping that most people won't care enough to Google them.  I'll PM you what they are.

oh, okay. sorry, i didn't mean to look like i was trying to put you all out there. :-*

Have you lost a lot of weight recently or something? Those are all things that people who've had Gastric Bypass Surgery usually get. . .

If plastic surgery weren't so dangerous I think I might do something to my thighs. First I'd invest in a personal trainer. I'm probably just not doing something right/enough in order to change how they look. To me, plastic surgery is the last choice after you've tried everything else.

I used to say I wouldn't mind having plastic surgery if needed,  but after going to the hospital for a mild surgical procedure, I realize I hate hospitals too much for elective surgery. But if an accident happened which would necessitate surgery, I'd do it. I mean who wants an Owen Wilson looking nose?

This would be something I'd consider, too. No matter how much I work out or train or whatever, I'm not happy with my inner thighs. The only way I can see my self loosing the weight there is if I get really, really skinny, but I like myself the way I am. Except for that. It kinda ruins everything I do at the gym if I feel self-conscious when I wear shorts.

Can i ask how much each procedure cost? was it horrendous/painful/not that bad?

EDIT: I think Owen Wilson's nose adds character!! See, this is what I'm talking about ...!

I definitely do not like Owen's nose. I would have some reservations about dating a guy with a nose like that.
What about the children?

I think Owen broke his nose twice....

Yeah if he's got a banged-up nose and isn't genetically that way, there is hope for the children  :)
Seriously, though, noses are an important feature IMO, they can make  or break a face.

I would consider getting plastic surgery for purely aesthetic purposes only if my skin doesn't stretch back after losing my post-pregnancy weight, and I have a tire of loose skin hanging from my otherwise tight abdomen. I'd consider a tummy tuck.

Otherwise, I wouldn't get anything else done. I think a lot of times, people are so lazy and will consider plastic surgery before they consider hopping their butts on a treadmill. Moreover, it gets addictive for a lot of people, and they constantly find things wrong with themselves, or features that don't fit what is currently considered "in" or "attractive" in society...

There's just some fat that won't go away no matter how hard you work out.  My inner thighs had rubbed together since I was a kid, and even as a fit sergeant, rub, rub, rub.  The outer thigh saddlebag sits on all the women in my family, no matter how many hours she spends running.  Lipo took care of both problems, and I'm thrilled.

I broke my nose and had a rhinoplasty when I was 16.  Insurance covered most of the surgery.  It was very, very painful.  My eyes were swollen completely shut for about a week afterward.  And, somehow, when they operated on my nose, a small blood vessel burst near my right eye and I had a very blood shot eye for the next 6 months.  My nose looked good for a few months and then it got hit again when I was cheerleading.  The girl on top fell out of the stunt and landed right on my face.  Now I have another bump on my nose.  I definately would not reccommend a nose job for the faint of heart...plus, you can always re-break or re-injure your nose like me.  I would only reccommend it if someone has a really hideous nose like Adrian Brody.  That is the only way it is worth it.

If I had surgery now, I would have a breast reduction and lift.  I wear a DD and I have alot of axillary breast tissue. I hate it!!!  They make it difficult to run and to exercise (I have to wear at least two sports bras) and I think they make me look heavier than I am.  I have a hard time ever buying a bikini because they don't make the cute swimsuit tops in XXL.  I always have to get some granny bathing suit.  I dream of having small, perky breasts.  I think a C would be so nice!

Not sure if I'm getting anything done just yet.  I've save up a lot of money and I was going to use it on a vacation with this guy but he pretty much dumped me so I guess I'll go make myself look better.

I'm going in for rhinoplasty and inner thigh lipo.  I am a size 8 but even when I was a size 4 my inner thighs weren't perfect.  I'm not looking for perfection, I just want to look better.  I want to be hott.  We'll see...I might get scared.  Who knows.

Any good doctor is going to sit you down and get to the bottom of why you want your thighs done.  "I want to be hottt," might not sit well.  When I told my doctor I wanted to do it because of the chafing and discomfort of rubbing thighs, and a desire for a more sleek look in clothes, he said that was a very good reason to go for it, "Not to become a supermodel." (his words).

Although I agree that Whit is a beautiful woman, I think the decision to have plastic surgery is more about how she sees herself and not how others see her.  A great deal or a woman's confidence comes from how she sees herself.  If it raises her confidence and makes her feel more beautiful to have her nose tweaked a little, then she should go for it and we should all support her.  I am sure that the change will be so minor that most people won't even be able to tell, but Whit will have a little more swing in her walk and glow in her eyes! ;D

Thank you very much.  That is a nice thing to say.  But there are just a few things I want to improve.  Plus, that is a professional photograph.  There was makeup and lighting involved.  Don’t get me wrong, I look like that, but you know how it is.

I disagree.  Are my inner thighs causing chafing to the point that it is uncomfortable?  NO.  Are my inner thighs preventing me from my daily activities?  NO.  Will a plastic surgeon do the lipo so that I can look hott by my standards?  YES!!!  Do you watch TV?  Have you seen extreme makeover or anything?  As long as you have money you do not need a medical reason for getting the plastic surgery (give or take a few exceptions).  Furthermore, we want the surgery for the same reasons.

Hott = Desire for a more sleek in clothes

I wish you luck, be careful, I've seen a lot of medical malpractice cases and sometimes the simpliest procedures go wrong. Just really be careful. I don't think you need surgery, but I guess you are doing what makes you happy.

OK, I've been to a good plastic surgeon in NJ and was sat down and questioned not once but twice about my reasons for wanting surgery.  I actually had the surgery.  You haven't but you know all the answers.  OK, fine.  You're right.  I'm wrong.  You just go on in there and say, "Turn me into a hotttttie!"  That's a good plan.

hey, hey, now.  no reason to get all testy.  your experience is your experience, but it may not be universal.  it would make sense if plastic surgeons didn't questions a person's motivation all that much, given that they make their bread and butter on elective surgery.  perhaps you had a particularly ethical doctor who wanted to make sure that every patient's reason was a good one, but pop culture and common sense seems to indicate that this isn't the trend.

Hey Twarga, how long did it take to recover after surgery?  I have heard that there is swelling and you don't see results for months.  I am a size 4 and work out, but my inner thighs aren't cooperative (hereditary sucks!).  I've thought about lipo, but the downtime after surgery sounds really crummy.

I had my surgery in Aug 2003.  I had inner and outer thighs done.  When I woke up after surgery, I had a girdle on which ran from my knees up past my waist.  I was living in Germany but had the surgery done in NJ while visiting family.  I would not recommend having surgery done in the summer, since the girdle is sooooo freakin' hot (and there is no air conditioning in Germany and 2003 was the hottest summer in Europe in 100 years!).  Other than that, my recovery was pretty uneventful.  They gave me a 5-day supply of Percocet, but I only used it for 3 days (I switched to Motrin and was fine).  There was no real swelling, and I could see the results immediately.  However, I was stuck wearing that girdle for 3 months (it has a pee hole- they want you to only take it off to shower) and the bruising was horrific looking.  It looked like someone beat my legs with a bat; they were all purple and green- but not painful.  I only had a couple of "down days" after surgery when I was still on the Percocet.  By day 3 or 4, I was out and about, doing my thing.  I bought some sundresses to wear over the girdle contraption and lived in them all summer.

That was 2 years ago and I am still thrilled with my results.  No inner thigh fat or saddlebags.

The results sound great, but the bruising and girdle sound bad!  how long did it take for the bruises to go away?  I think I am too much of a scaredy to cat to have the procedure after all, but good for you that you got the results you wanted and had the surgery performed by someone conscientous and reputable :)

OK, I've been to a good plastic surgeon in NJ and was sat down and questioned not once but twice about my reasons for wanting surgery.  I actually had the surgery.  You haven't but you know all the answers.  OK, fine.  You're right.  I'm wrong.  You just go on in there and say, "Turn me into a hotttttie!"  That's a good plan.

I’m a professional.  I would NEVER go into a doctor’s office and use the words hott or hottie.  Also, I know that I do not have all of the answers, hence my reason for having a consultation.  I’m just saying that I will likely be able to get the lipo WITHOUT a medical/chafing reason.  Loosen up.

Your post made me laugh!  No really, I am not black.  I am 1/2 white and 1/2 middle-eastern.  Try taking someone from the middle east and marrying them to someone whose family is from the South - not a pleasant growing up experience as far as being accepted.  And Lassie was great!  I love dogs.  I am like the female Ace Ventura.

I figured you were kidding  ;), but then I felt like my bi-racial comment might have truly been ambiguous.  It is funny, growing up how I did it has taken me a long time to even say "yes, I am this!" because I had so much shame for so long when people would ask.

And I think Lassie is apropos as my avatar.  Firstly, she is like me: beautiful, smart, loyal, and committed to rescuing people.  What is a better avatar for a future international human rights lawyer  :)  (and yes, i know the real dog who played lassie was a boy - the one way lassie and I are not alike hahahaha)

What kind of dog was it?  I guess I never think to notice correlation between race/breed of pet except I do notice young white guys who dress in baggy clothes, with lots of chains, wearing wife beaters, seem to always have a huge pitbull as they parade down a busy street.  Hmm...I just figured they were overcompensating for something?  I will have to start paying more attention  ;)

I have a sheltie!  He is my biological son.  I got him when he was a puppy and we did puppy kindergarten, beginning obedience, advanced obedience, and agility.  He stayed with my mom and step-dad when I bought my own place and moved.  He is old now and has liver disease, so is on medicine   :(  They are wonderful dogs - nothing smarter or more sensitive.  But they bark WAY too much.  I have two elderly chihuahuas of my own (rescues) and when they pass on, I will get another Sheltie.

Chihuahuas count, right?  My family members have those. Are we Black enough? :P

I was gonna ask that.  Can a black woman who is a fashionista carry a chihuahua in a purse while she shops at Neiman?  This can't be wrong!  My Chihuahuas are very aggressive and don't take any sh-t!  They would go ballistic on a Rott or Pitt (or die trying).

When I was in high school, I was 5'9, 130 lbs with thighs that rubbed together and saddlebags.  When I finished basic training at 21, I was still 5'9 (go figure), 125 lbs and in the best shape of my life, with thighs that rubbed together and saddlebags.  That's when I figured they were there to stay, unless I got someone to Hoover them out of town.  Some fat just doesn't want to budge!

i agree with you.  i have heard that you can only hope to deplete fat cells, not get rid of them entirely.  conversely, i have heard that adults generally do not put on new fat cells, just fill up their exisiting ones.  liposuction and dieting is fascinating to me.

Please do not take this the wrong way, but did you get a lower body reconstruction of some sort?  Your plastic surgery sounds much more severe than the procedure I desire.  I do not have saddlebags and do not anticipate looking different in jeans.  I just hope to have more space between my thighs.  I do not want to change the overall shape of my legs…I like my genes :)

I had no lower body reconstruction like a leg lift.  I had simple lipo on the inner and outer thighs.  I think you underestimate the power of a good Hoover-job.  I used to have that pointy hip and inner thigh blob.  Gone!  The doctor told me how many cc's he removed from each thigh, but I said, "I'm a housewife, speak to me in cups and tablespoons."  He said he removed about 1/4 cup of fat from each inner and outer thigh.  That's a lot.  My legs look more toned and sleek now.  All from a simple lipo job.  Nothing fancy.

For the record, lipo isn't necessarily for fatties.  It's a good procedure for people of average size, like me, who want to get rid of fat that does not go away with diet or exercise.  I had fatty inner thighs and saddlebags that didn't go away, even though I'm physically fit (military) and quite thin.

oh, i didn't meant to imply that it was only for the grossly obese.  i just meant that the thought of having lypo will keep my at my current size (you couldn't find anything to suck off if you wanted to).

yeah, lipo would be pointless for an obese person.  where would the doctor begin?

another question (sorry, but i find this stuff fascinating), did your skin suck back to normal?

Yes, it did.  You'd never know I had anything done unless I told you.  I always thought my upper thighs made me look like a chubby baby.  Now they match the rest of my body.  I went in with the goal of looking more sleek and streamlined.  I do.

I haven't seen 105 since I was in 3rd or 4th grade. Personally, I wouldn't want to. You sound too skinny, Ruskie. Do you have any muscle on those bones?

I've been working out a little lately, so yes, I do.  I had to cut out the physical activity for a few years because of a soccer injury and a quasi-heart condition, but I am learning to excercise around those things now.  I know I am small, but I look healthy and have never had weight issues, so if you're worried about the Lindsey Lohan disease, it doesn't apply to me. ;)  Ask Fabyaluss -- she's met me!

105 is good for someone who's only 5'1, but for me (at 5'9), anything under 145 looks gaunt.

The smallest I was at 5'10 was 135 and I don't think I looked good at that weight. Right now I weight between 147-150 and I think that's the perfect size for me. As for plastic surgery, I wouldn't get anything done to my face or body.

However I may need surgery on my feet. Gymnastics and ballet caused the bone in my big toe to curve inward... (DONT LAUGH)

ahahaha. muse's got boomerang feet. jk, muse.

that foot surgery is probably not plastic surgery.  sounds like you messed up your bone structure, so it should be like a regular medical procedure and it should be readily covered by your insurance.

Regal, I have the exact same problem with my feet (with the same sources).  I thought briefly about having the surgery, but my boss had it and told me that it was the most painful and debilitating thing imaginable.  She says if she had know how it would be, she wouldn't have bothered.  I don't think I'll put myself through months of agony and lack of mobility just for aesthetics.  And they don't look all THAT bad...

Do you mind saying how much that cost you?  The inner and outer thigh is an issue with me as well.  i exercise all the time and they just won't get smoothe.

Thanks!  I would completely do it for around $4000.  I think I'll start saving now.  I just had LASIK on my eyes, so I have to pay that off first.  But maybe next year I could venture out for the legs.

What a fun idea!  I'm all about plastic surgery as long as it isn't life-altering, like 'i wanna look like jennie mccarthy'.  and i wouldn't do it w/o trying to exercise and do it myself first and then realize that i need professional help. :)
