Title: National Bar Association
Post by: blk_reign on April 29, 2005, 09:39:43 AM
I figured this should be a thread.. :)

Are any of you guys thinking about going to the National Bar Associations Convention this yr? It's from July 30-August 6th in Orlando Florida.. I think that the experience would be excellent for the beginning of your legal careers... Even if you can't make it for the entire conference.. consider going to a meeting or two..

I also advise you guys to get involved with the city bar associations when you enter law school.. Some student (city) bar fees are waived..otherwise you'll pay $12 to become a full member.. there are many networking opportunities that will come from this.. Lawyers will mentor you through Young Lawyers Section.. and it will definitely give you an edge with some firms..

You can also join the NBA, it's free.

And for anyone coming to the NYC-Metro area, I have a list of organizations to join, like Blk-Reign suggested, in our area that are either free or the highest joining fee as a law student is $20.

And dont forget Willie Gary's every 2 year Gala. But the knowledge and the connections made will be priceless. Cant wait to meet everyone, I was even thinking about the Black Prosecutors in Philly, so if you"ll know any prosecutors, especially those that will be in Orlando hit me up on PM, because I need to meet with them.

I tried, but I could never get the ball into the hoopy-thing. Then they got mad when I just ran away with it and wouldn't give it back.

I'll probably go for at least some of the events, since my house is less than 1 hour away.  It seems like it would be a great networking opportunity.

Guess who made front page of my newspaper this morning?  Yep, Willie E. Gary!

Gary must pay $29,100 monthly child support

ATLANTA Stuart attorney Willie Gary has won hundreds of millions of dollars for his clients, but now he must pay millions of his own money to an Atlanta woman and the twins he fathered out of wedlock.

Diane Gowins, a registered nurse with whom Gary had a brief relationship five years ago, has been awarded $29,100 a month for 16 years, a total of more than $5.3 million. It may be the largest child support award in Georgia history.

Gary had asked Fulton County Judge Cynthia Wright to reduce the payments to $5,000 a month. The judge could have applied the formula state law provides for calculating child support which could have made the payments as much as $425,000 a month.

"Mr. Gary has been extraordinarily generous in taking care of these twin children," said Kenneth Schatten, Gary's attorney. "We are disappointed in the result and fully intend to appeal."

Gary, who lives in a 25,000-square-foot home worth $5.4 million and has four Bentleys and a Rolls-Royce, has no other contact with the children beyond money he sends their mother by the 15th day of each month, according to Robert Moss, Gowins' attorney.

Gary and renowned attorney Johnnie Cochran, who died recently, represented black employees who sued Coca-Cola Co. over discrimination claims and reached a $192.5 million settlement in 2001.

Gary now represents the family of Jerrod Miller, the Delray Beach 16-year-old who was shot and killed by a city police officer when Miller drove his car erratically on school grounds during a high school dance. His firm also represents the family of a black insurance analyst killed by a Muscogee County, Ga., sheriff's deputy during a drug investigation in December. The family of Kenneth Walker is seeking $100 million.

Gary is chairman of the Atlanta-based Black Family Channel, which calls itself a "wholesome" family-oriented cable TV company.

Gary was married with four adult children when he had a brief relationship with Gowins in Atlanta five years ago. At the time, Gowins said she was training in track and field for the 2000 Olympic Games. The twins were born Nov. 9, 2000.

Initially, Gary and Gowins tried to resolve questions about child support by filing court papers in Walker County, far from Atlanta, where the case might attract less attention. The case had to be moved to Atlanta because neither had lived in that northwest Georgia county.

Their support settlement stipulated $14,000 a month for each child. But Gary contended he misread the agreement and signed it with the understanding that the $14,000 covered both children, even though he had been paying the $29,100 a month. The payment also included $1,100 for medical and insurance costs.

Gary asked Wright, the Fulton County judge, to reduce his monthly obligation to $5,000 because he said Gowins was mismanaging the money she was receiving to support a lavish lifestyle for herself and not necessarily using it for the children.

"She was learning how to manage her money, and she is now doing well," Moss, the woman's attorney, said Thursday.

Still, Gary admitted that the $29,100 monthly expense had little impact on his life. According to court documents, Gary has a Boeing 737 that costs $150,000 a month to operate. He estimated his stake in his law firm to be worth $20 million.

Man...that's insane. Do does that mean he cheated on his wife? DOES ANYONE RESPECT MARRIAGE THESE DAYS? Putting his male private part where it doesn't belong is going to cost him a pretty penny. I wonder how his wife feels. I would divorce him. I wonder if the nurse got pregnant on purpose? You know how those groupies think sometimes. That's a meal ticket right there. To all of our future millionaires male attorneys on the board HBCU, Sands, BP, RBG, Cali, 3peat, Crowdaddy, etc...becareful where you stick that animal down there. You might come up with a surprise...

u know she's not going to divorce him..and she probably knew considering the fact that he's high profile..it was bound to get out sooner or later... 5 yr old twins.. serves him right.. it sucks that they'll never know their father... with all of the things that he professes to do for the black community you'd think he'd set an example for his sons.. the irony.. he's the chairman of THE BLACK FAMILY CHANNEL which prides itself in good family values...
