Title: Headed to USD?..Who are you and where are you from?
Post by: shortckt on April 29, 2005, 06:55:51 AM
I will be in the PT program.
Working full time at Fish & Richardson prosecuting patents by day.
From the East Coast, DC area (Alexandria, VA).
Currently a patent examiner.
My wife will also be at USD PT.
So, obviously married.
And old, 33.
Brand new to the West Coast.
Will need lots of new friends there.
With such a small 1L class, I hope to do just that.

And, where will you live????

Hey shortckt
Good idea with this thread, a little about me.

I will be FT.
Went to school at UC San Diego but have been living back up in Los Angeles the past 5 years, am really excited to get back down to San Diego, you guys are in for a treat living there.
I will turn 27 a month into law school, so im starting to feel old too.
No wife or attachments yet
Yeah, i got a really good vibe form the students and incoming students when i visted there so i can't wait to move.
I am looking at places in Mission Valley, fashion Valley, Claremont, Linda Vista, La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Ocaen Beach and maybe downtown.  Luckily out there theres not a huge amount of traffic so if you live anywehre within 10 m iles of campus, which all those places are, your commute will be very small.  Where are u looking?
When are you guys planning on moving to SD?  If you have any questions about San Diego the city, I could prolly answer a lot of them

Hi Danno!
Good to meet someone who actually know about San Diego.
When I visited, I tested the rush hour traffic, and it was nothing compared to here in DC, and so I am happy about that.
My work will be near Del Marr area, and so I will be driving about 30 min to school everyday.  Would love to live near La Jolla, but I don't think I can afford it, especially since I'm looking to buy.  Know any reasonably priced area for purchase anywhere between Del Marr and USD?

By the way, 27 is still young.  You'll know what I mean when you pass 30.

Hope you see you there in the Fall.

Hi shortckt.  Yeah, i forgot how the traffic was, i mean compared to LA, its nothing.  del Mar is really nice, obviously so is La Jolla but you are pretty much looking at million plus if you want to buy something.  I would try Mira Mesa and University City.  they are both pretty close to campus and to Del MAr, they are right next to La Jolla but a little more inland so its a lot cheaper.  Plus there are a lot of single family homes out there.  The housing market in Southern california is i think at its peak right now, so my advice would be to rent for a little while and wait for the prices to go down.

Yeah, i feel old because i was running this week and i messed up my knee just from jogging, never would have happened when i was younger.  Sucks, but oh well.  Good luck with your househunt tho, oh and i think linda vista i forgot too, which is right by campus, isnt too expensive

Thanks for the Info Danno.
I will defintely look in those areas.

Ahhhh, been there done that about your knee.
I used to job 6 miles a day, but now a 2 mile jog will seriously hurt my knees. It swells up and throbbs for days.  It only get's worst so get used to it and stay in shape.  My biggest mistake was to let myself get out of shape, and now it's soooo tough getting back in shape.

so i'm not attending usd in the fall but i might be able to add some relevant information - i am a current resident of san diego, have been so for the past 7 years (ucsd alumni, like danno) and will be headed to DC in the fall for law school to study what is no other than patent / ip law. seems that our apparent simultaneous rotation to opposite ends of the country is yin maintaining harmony with the yang ...

but seriously, if you're living in north county san diego (which i do) and commuting south (as i do as well) in the mornings and then north again in the afternoon (which, duh, i also do) then you're headed for what is more or less a complete and utter disaster - so don't do that. if you want to see a freeway hit critical mass on a level that rivals the 405 and an imploding neutron star you have to do no other than get on the 5 North on a friday afternoon from somewhere like la jolla / pb (USD area) and head to del mar.

noticed that you are a part time student, so you may be able to plan around rush hour, though this line of reasoning is becoming more and more faulty everyday, as this city is growing a monstrous rate (4 million people in SD now, if i contines to grow at the same rate that is has established over the past 10 years, they estimate a total of 10 million people by 2025!!!!) so yes, if you have the means, buy a house - you stand to make a tidy profit during the course of several years. you know, goes back to that whole supply and demand thing.

so i guess the point is that though del mar is undoubtedly beautiful you might want to avoid it - better to live in PB and commute north, or la jolla and commute north. but then again, if you have the money to buy into del mar then why attend law school in the first place ? :) but i digress ...

Hey everyone!

As shortckt knows I'm still on the fence, but I'm leaning towards USD so here we go.. :)

I'm a 25 year old from Tucson, a graduate of the University of Arizona.  I own a wholesale car dealership which I am looking to expand into San Diego, so I would take the PT option.  I am also going to buy a house in San Diego and will be looking for roommates.  If you are interested, please let me know!  I'd much rather full the room(s) with law students!

SHORTCKT - I too will be attending USD PT this fall and am an old timer at 29.  I live and own a home in San Diego.  My wife and I moved out here 3 years ago from DC and bought our place about a year and a half ago in a nice neighborhood about 5 miles from USD's campus.  The housing market here is crazy, but has begun to level off a bit.  If you currently own a place in DC then the sticker shock shouldn't be as bad.  If you need info on good areas to look, prices, etc., I would be more than happy to help.  I can also give you the name of the agent that we used, she is amazing.  We actually fired two agents before we found her..some east coast tendencies die slow. Feel free to ask any questions that you have about San Diego.  We had some friends that helped us adjust when we came out and we are more than willing to do the same for you.  Above all, get excited because you are about to spend the next three plus years in paradise.

AZWWildcat,

Wholesale car dealer?
What kind?  I'm going to need to buy a car in SD.  Hurry up and decide to go USD and hook me up!!

Ryon,

Great to meet another PTer, older applicant from DC.
Man, please PM me the realtor info.  I might be in San Diego looking for housing in May.  I could really use a good realtor.
I realize it's pricy, but it's very comparable to DC like you've mentioned and I really love to own my place.

Thanks in advance for the realtor info!

From my one visit, it sure felt like paradise.
I looking to start my new job beginning of June and so will move right before that time.

By the way, I think you can take night classes as a full time student.
So, join us cool kids at night.  ;D

Can you tell that today's my day off.

Wholesale meaning my main focus is dealer to dealer sales.  I can, however, sell to the public.  There will be plenty of amazing deals!  (e.g. Just today bought an 02 Dodge Ram 4x4 short bed short cab SLT with 7000 miles for $11,000)

My Arizona seat deposit is due May 26, so by then for sure.  As far as where the house will be, just like in cars, I'm a buyer of opportunity.  If there's a million dollar house that's "cheap", I'm in.  If it's a 400k condo, I'm in.  I'm thinking it will be a $800-900k home in the Mission Beach area.  I will be looking in June for a close the first week in August.

Hey all
22 years old here, graduated from USC (foooooootball champs!)

Went to Case Western Reserve for 3 semesters studying comp engineering, realized that not only does engineering suck, but Cleveland does not rock. Not even a little bit.

Born and raised in La Jolla, went to private school across the street from USD (not USDHS, but Francis Parker). Been around the country enough to proudly say that San Diego is indeed America's Finest City (with one of the worst mayors, er, ex-mayors)

Have a fiancee who will be a 1L at USC law, so my pride is a little dented there.  :P

Oh yeah, FT. Like I would have anything better to do.

I'm looking for a used top down euro-model (when in Rome...).
If you get your hands on a slightly old Beemer 3 series or Z3, save it for me.  ;D
San Diego seems like the perfect city for a convertible.

Woooohhh!
Now, you're talking.
Would love an M3 but trying to keep the cost under 20k, preferably around 15k.
Gotta pay for the wife's car too.
Will be happy with older regular 3 series convertible, hopefully not more than 60k miles.

On a side note: Really good to see all the USD people here. Looking foward to meeting all of you there this fall.

If I wind up getting in off the waitlist, I'll let you borrow my 2002 Wrangler sometime next year.  You can take the wifey for a cruise up PCH. Not quite an M3, but it's a start.

Hi!  Sorry I kinda disappeared for a bit...

I'm excited to meet everyone and start this whole law school "thing"...I've been having some cold feet lately about actually starting law school, but after admit day and the reception, I'm feeling a lot less apprehensive  :)

I'm 23, an alumni of the University of Arizona, and have been living in SD for about a year since I graduated.  I have a steady boyfriend down here that I'm *pretty* attached to :) but no kids or marriage for me at least not during school...

As for housing, AZ keep your fellow wildcat in mind  ;) Haha, I'm going to start looking for apts soon in the Linda Vista, Bay Park, and Mission Valley area.  I want to try and stay near campus...I have this nightmare of showing up to class late and getting picked on by the prof...from the USD students I talked to so far, they all say the traffic in that area is not too bad, but parking can be a bit of a problem...

Welcome back Sunset!

Linda Vista looks like a good choice near school.
As for me, I won't have to worry about parking since I will attending at night.
Although, the rush hour traffic may be bad coming from work in Del Mar area.

Looking forward to meeting everyone this fall.

Well, looks like I too will be a fellow USD Law student this fall, FT program.  I'm very excited to say the least.
Lets see, I graduated from UofA this past December and I've got to say that I am very excited to see a few fellow Wildcats posting here!!. I've since moved back up to the Phoenix area and am now currently working Full-time, trying to save a little money so I can have a little cushion for the upcoming year-we'll see how long that lasts. I will turn 23 the SECOND DAY of class (so I guess Law School will be my birthday present?)
Anyway, I'm very excited about attending USD.  My sister attended as an undergrad for a year, ended up transfering to UofA, so I'm a little familiar with the campus(beautiful comes to mind!)  I'm also looking forward to moving back to CA after all these years, I'm originally from the Bay Area but haven't actually lived in CA since well before I started grade school. (Ca born, grew up in Minnesota of all places, and went to high school and college in AZ)
I'm also hoping to visit this summer, hopefully late May/early June to look into housing.
But other than that, I'm looking forward to meeting everyone this fall!

Does anyone know if spouses can use the sports center and jenny craig pavillion? I work out with my fiance and was hoping we could both have an alternative to 24 Hour Fitness. Also, does anyone know how those facilities are?

I need some ACC people to bond with.
Anybody else from GaTech or any other ACC schools?

I guess not many East Coast people travel West for school..
Oh well, I guess I'm gonna have to be a one man gang.

Not much BBall to mention. Though I did party with Sam Clancy a few times. I hate mentioning USC bball in the same thread as that of UA. 8)

Oh, here's a pic of my gf (right side) with Leinart (center,  ;))

Since this has become the Arizona alumni network, would you both mind telling me why you're selecting USD over Arizona?  I know Sunset expressed regrets for not applying, but that doesn't mean you'd attend.  What is USD's advantage to you over Arizona?

I am really struggling with this decision.  I have very little doubt in my mind that Arizona is the superior school, from top to bottom.  With that said, here are my list of pros and cons in order of most important to least, feel free to nit pick at them. :)

USD
Pros:  Change of lifestyle/scenery
PT will allow me to continue my business, and in fact expand it.
Seems like better placement into LA, and certainly into SD.
Much easier to take a law degree from USD into Arizona than an Arizona degree into CA
Weaker student body=better chance at higher placement

Cons:  Administration doesn't seem to be on par with the professors
           Cost  (Tuition and living)
Out of the several schools I visited, the students seem the most jaded here.  Pepperdine was far and away the spirit leader. :)
This may be snotty, but for 33k/year, the condition of that building is totally unacceptable.

Arizona
Pros:  Legit T1 school
Everyone from the Deans to the administration over to the professors have a terrific attitude and are there to help, no question.
          Low Cost
Reputation is rising.. From US News to their Arizona Law Review (ranked in the 20s of most cited, pretty impressive!  USD is in the 110s)
This is where I currently live, so I don't think studying would be too hard
Top school in Arizona, best placement in the state

Cons:  It's where I grew up and went to undergrad!
I was stunned when I asked my uncle's law firm recruiter/partner, located in LA with 80 attorneys, what they would think of me as an Arizona grad.. "Because of who you are it doesn't matter where you go, but if you were just another resume, we wouldn't even consider you."  eeks
Stronger student body, placement may be hard
Despite Arizona's claims to the contrary, big law looks to be limited to AZ.
Parking-- I'm not on the list so I'll have no spot for next year.

Thoughts?

You (and any one else commuting to USD from Del Mar) that the traffic is really really bad on the 5 south from 3:30 to about 6:30.  It can be stand still.  FR is in Del mar if I'm not mistaken.  Are you planning on working 8-5?  It's definately going to be more than a 30 min drive.  You might want to try to do a 7-4 thing or something, otherwise you will be late every day and only eat dinner before 10:00 on Fridays.  You could probably take the coaster.  I don't know where all the stops are, but I know it goes along the coast and can drop you off downtown at the trolley station.  Also, I was driving by the Linda Vista trolley station the other day (where there has always been a problem with limited parking) and it looks like they are doing a serious parking lot project to expand parking.  USD has a bus that picks up and drops off students at the Linda Vista trolley station.

BTW, did anyone notice that USD jumped up 4 spots this year on USNWR?

JeffB,

Thanks for the traffic info.  Fish & Richardson is in Del Mar, and I will be working 7-4 or even 6-3 to avoid any traffic issues.  I'm a morning person, and so that won't be a problem.

And I did notice the 4 step jump in USD's ranking.  Don't get too excited though.  USD is now back to their 2004 ranking.  Still, I hope we continue to move up and land in Tier 1 before we graduate.

so what do you all think of living in mission beach?  is that a good/bad idea?  i was in san diego this weekend, and it looked really fun down there.  it reminds me alot of the newport peninsula in OC, and lots of my friends right now live there and love it.

AZ...you listed a lot of pro's and con's so I can tell you've done your research...for myself, my biggest pro is getting out of Arizona (much needed change of scenery, like yourself I grew up there and went to UA)...I'll admit with the reality of taking out all these loans now that I'm wondering if I should have at least applied to UA or the dreaded ASU (hehe), but I feel as though I'm making a good decision with USD...

Where are you now on your decision?

Mission Beach is a nice area, not too far from campus.  I'm also looking at Linda Vista (more "ghetto" but sooo close and convenient!), Bay Park, Mission Valley, and Fashion Valley.  People also recommended PB as a fun, safe, relatively close area, but I'll hold off on PB till 2 or 3L at least...after surving the 1L "work you to death"...

Why is North Park so cheap?  I've started to look, and I'm surprised at the cheap apt rental prices I am finding... cottages for 900 etc.

I grew up in SD and generally North Park is not known to be a good area.  Then again alot of those places around Normal Heights and Hillcrest have become trendy  for the emo/open mike crowd.  I will be at USD PT next year but hoping for FT.  I'm finsihing undergrad at Cal Poly, Slo and grew up in east county San Diego.  Hope to see some of you in the fall.  Let me know if any of you have questions about the area.

Del mar is areally nice area.  It's pricey and the traffic on the 5 and 805 south is nasty during rush hour (when part-time school starts).  I have looked int ouniversity apartments and it's not that good of a deal.  I'm looking at the Clairemont area.  Linda Vista seems to be San Diego's Vietnamese area.  For those who are not from San Diego, FYI, Hillcrest is San Diego's gay district.  I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with that, but if you want to live next to the S&M stores with all male manequins that are on every corner, that's your perogative.  They do have some rally good restaurants though.
Title: Re: Headed to USD?..Who are you and where are you from?

Now don't misrepresent Hillcrest, sure there are some S & M stores in Hillcrest but there are some all over San Diego but they are not on EVERY corner. North Park has cheaper housing because a lot of it is pretty sketchy but there are some up and coming areas and it is part of some sort of urban renewal program. There are a lot of sketchy/trashy areas in Clairemont. Linda Vista is pretty sketch with large Vietnamese and Mexican populations (I'm not saying that's what makes it sketch).

East county is def not as glamorous as some other spots but doesn't have terrible traffic and isn't too expensive.  Rancho San Diego and parts of La Mesa, Fletcher Hills, and Lake Murray are nice.  I think Mission Valley would be an ideal spot to live in for USD. Hillcrest is actaully kinda cool.  It is the gay district but is pretty nice.  The whole area around downtown and balboa park is nice/fun but expensive.  North county has tons of nice spots but like was mentioned before traffic can be rough.

Let me put it in this context.. The Del Mar area seems to have all of the new construction which I am very interested in; however, if that would be a deal breaker for any USD student looking for a room, then I shouldn't live there.  So would those of you who know the area/commute say that there's no chance of living there, the room would have to be cheap, or you'd seriously consider it along with others?

That area is nice...it might be a bit of a commute depending on traffic on the 5...no traffic, 10 minutes to USD...with traffic..don't even want to imagine.

I didn't go to high school in Tucson...I went to Mohave High in Bullhead City (yeah, it doesn't sound glamorous, but it's home!)...this is not really relevant, but I lived around the corner from Salpointe my 3rd and 4th year...

AZWildcat,

You need to hurry up and decide to attend USD!
I need to buy a car during the week of May 23-29.  ;D
Hook me up with a 1998-2000 bmw 328 convertible (hopefully for 15K and under 75k miles)!
I will be there house hunting.  I wish I could buy in Del Mar area, but not enough $$.
I'm looing at North county inland area.

Could you define what makes North Park "bad?".  I've driven through a fair amount of San Diego and have difficulty picturing what constitutes bad.  crime, ugly, drugs?  I've lived in Chicago and SF, so maybe I have a different picture of "bad" neighborhoods.

I can get you a car no matter where I go. :)  That said, I'm a "value shopper" vs a "program shopper", so I'll only buy such a BMW if it's a good deal vs program buyers which need a certain selection of cars regardless what they pay for them.

Maybe I'm being a snot by thinking the Del Mar area is not a lot of money, but consider what 700k buys you around USD, and then look at something like this..

New Construction

I LOVE Del Mar and I'd be willing to make that commute. We're actually considering that area to move to, I think I'd like to end up in that area after law school too. I grew up in Cardiff which is just North of Del Mar and it really is such a nice area. It's very quiet, but it is kind of far from the center of San Diego so I'm not sure how other younger students would like that area. I'm a family gal myself so that's why it's appealing to me. Just food for thought. It is a great area though.

i live in cardiff right now - a stone's throw from birmingham and freda. love the suburb especially on the weekends but commuting south in the mornings is a DISASTER

Ok, Hillcrest is not that bad, but it's pretty extreme.  I just thought I'd throw that warning out so that the out-of-towners don't end up going to the Brass Rail looking to get a date.  I lived in downtown El Cajon for a year, or as I call it, the heart of darkness.  I also used to work for the ECPD.  We used a program called Arjis to track crime.  They have a web page (www.arjis.org). You can check crime statistics by neighborhood.  Another good rating of what constitutes ghetto is on the attorney general for CA web page Megan's law sex offender web page.  Note that you have to get to the street level in El Cajon to see something other than dots.

I lived in La Mesa/Lake Murray area for a year and I loved it.  Rent for a one bedroom is about $800.  It's real quiet and about 20 minute drive to school.

I am looking at the Clairemont/Genesee area because I want to live closer to work and downtown.  Twenty minutes wasted in the traffic one way is another 40 minutes a day I could spend reading or relaxing.

Is everyone going to the orientation on August 17 & 18?  I jsut got the letter today.

Okay, so I really thought I'd want to live in Linda Vista just for convenience sake even though I've heard it's somewhat ghetto...but after going around to a few complexes this weekend...I just...don't...think...so...geez, and I'd thought that backpacking in India had wiped out all last traces of prissiness I'd ever had  :-[  It's just the immediate area near USD on Linda Vista that seems kinda sketchy and a 2L student I spoke with who lived in that area 1st year said it was a "miserable and dismal" experience.  Yikes.  Back to the apartment hunt!!

Also, although I know their won't be many nights to go out I doubt anyone goes their whole first year without going out to bars a couple times.  That being said, is there a good area to live so that taxi to bars and nightlife is feasible?  Where do USD law people go to bars?

University City...you mean UTC right?  It's near La Jolla but more inland.  A lot of UCSD students live in this area as it's more afforadable than La Jolla, where UCSD is technically located.

As for bars...there's nightlife in Gaslamp (downtown, prob about 10 minutes from USD), Pacific Beach, etc.  USD has "Bar Review" where the law students get together on Friday nights and go to a designated bar/club for discounted or free cover and drink specials.  When I went to check out campus, they were having their Bar Review that week at Michael's which is actually in sleepy La Jolla.  I'd been there once...err, let me just say...interesting crowd...it's in the Hyatt La Jolla.

Care to elaborate on "interesting crowd"?  I was never one to read between the lines.  UTC?  where does the T come from?  i just saw it on mapquest but it seems to be the area you are talking about.  For second I thought maybe it would be too noisy if UCSD kids live there but then I realized their all nerds anyway.

AZ, are you going to be a Torero?

Funny you should mention that. :)  I just met again with the U of A Admissions Dean today, and to say she's great would be an understatement.  She spoke extremely candidly about the admissions process, why the LSAT is taken so seriously, the strengths and weaknesses of my file, etc.  (She knew all about lawschoolnumbers.com haha)

I really feel like Arizona is a strong community school, and attrition rates bear that out.  Arizona's first year attrition rate is a Harvard like 1.3% whereas USD is 11.4%.  Obiviously I'll never have to worry about failing out of school, but I do think attrition rates go right to the heart of the school's overal climate and atmosphere.  If someone would like to comment on how these numbers are misleading, I'd love to hear it!

Arizona is a better school.  I just want to leave Tucson, so USD has a VERY strong draw.  To answer your question, I have not decided, but the next seat deposits are due in 10 days. :)

Just joking around about UCSD, just thought since I'll being going to its neighbor a little ribbing was in order.  Although when I visited as a high schooler I saw a pretty weak showing, but then again my school UCLA was bad too, half my freshman dorm look like they were straight out of the Star Wars camp-out line.

I wish USD would give us more info on recommended places.  I took this acceptance blind, I've never even see the school, just going by reviews and rankings.  Unfortunately by the time I realized USD would be my top choice it was too late for any tours or accept days.

I'm a little disappointed with USD's input on finding housing also, basically every other school I applied to sent out brochures and maps of the surrounding residential areas with some names and costs of different places.  Wake Forest even has an apartment hunting weekend where they have a bunch of activities planned and people come as a group to check out places to live in the area.

I was skeptical about how bad the neighborhood around USD really was until I visited there and after I left I was trying to go to Old Town but took a wrong turn and ended up in a ghetto ass trailer park about 2 minutes from the campus. This sucks because I would really like to live within walking distance or no more then a few minutes drive from campus. Has anybody heard anything about the availability of the on campus apartments?

It seems according to this site and the stuff from USD that access group is better if you have really good credit or a cosigner who does (ie parent).  It seems the lowest rate of LIBOR + 2.5% at access is untouchable by the others, but it depends on great credit.

I think I'm going to have my dad co-sign and then I'll take out a cheap life insurance policy to cover the debt just in case I were to die somehow.  I think my parents would probably just toss my corpse in a ditch if I died and left a $100K+ debt in their names.

On a seperate note, anyone have thoughts on law school roommates during your first year?  Live alone?  I think USD is sending out a roommate list later in the summer.

There is some sort of rebate with T.H.E. that supposedly makes it come out to be a better deal than access. I'm not quite sure about the details though. I'm going with T.H.E.

Is that the consequetive ontime payments bonus?  I think I saw someone else does that but not sure.  It so f-ing hard to make sense of this all.

I read also that stafford loans are at 6% interest right now which is not really any better than I'm getting.  plus the unsubsidized ones acrue interest like normal loans during school.  and there is a 4% fee.  Am I missing something or is Uncle Sam not really helping me out at all?!  God dammit, I pay my taxes, hook me up.

There is some sort of rebate with T.H.E. that supposedly makes it come out to be a better deal than access. I'm not quite sure about the details though. I'm going with T.H.E.

Do you know what rebate that is?  I am trying to decide between the two right now...
Both orgs have no fees on the Stafford and private loans...the main differences are in their interest rate incentives.  It's hard to determine though which will be the bigger savings though...I'll only be taking the Stafford loans for 1L, but the private loan rate for THE is fixed at 6.43% according to the rep I spoke to for USD (that's 3 mo LIBOR + 3.75%) while the Access Group private loan rate is at 3 mo LIBOR + the variable % depending on your credit score...which could give you about a 1% lower rate for the best credit (5.32%), a slightly higher rate for middle range (6.52%), and a much higher 9.3something% for the worst credit.

Does anyone know when this summer USD is sending out the roommate list?  I started looking at postings on craigslist but I'm wondering if it will be stressful living w/ non law students...or more stressful living with law students??  Any thoughts?

I think it has to be more stressful living with non law students!  Living with 1Ls would give a great outlet to ask questions, they're much more likely to respect "quiet time" (assuming that you're in different sections and have different assignments), etc.

If anyone wants to be my roommate, I should know my whole plan in the next few weeks.  I think I'll be building a house, so I'd like a roommate for an apartment and then for the house.  (If you can't tell, my leaning is huge to USD right now.. the 105 degree temps make it easier :) )

Kennsington is an older part of town in San Diego meaning that it the buildings, houses, and businesses in the area aren't new.  What I know of it is that it kind of has an artsy vibe with a fair amount coffee shops and open mike nights for example.  Its a decent part of town, neither great nor bad.  On the topic of loans, are they something I need to be more informed about?  I have put off looking into them.  I filled out FAFSA sometime in February and sent in the financial aid info sheet to USD a week or two ago.  Can anyone offer their knowledge on the subject?   Lastly to those who moved off the FT waitlist, when did you send in your second deposit?  Did you write a letter of continued interest?  Thanks.

And yes, all room aside from the courtroom have power outlets at the seats.  The courtroom is being retrofit soon.

Congrats AZ, i think you made the wise choice, you'll definitely appreciate the 80 degree summer days more than the 105 degreee days.  And thanks for the info about the laptops.  So when are you planning on moving down to sd and where are u building your house?  and i second that, we should all definitely meet up somewhere before school starts, i am moving toward the end of july, cannot freakin wait to leave la

I just talked to USD today.  They said the roommate questionaires should be emailed and mailed out in late june.  She didn't give me too much of an idea what they would do other than I guess show peoples' interests and contact info (like we'll have time for "interests next year"!).  At first I was thinking of living alone, but now I'm thinking it might be really helpful to live with 1 or 2 other 1L's, get a little moral support while knowing they are just as bogged down as you.

I saw some apartment buildings listed on the website that are walking distance to campus which would be convenient (i was told by a 3L that these are clutch and he was graduating top 10%).

We'll all have to use this board in a month or so to see whose interested in rooming.  BTW, I bring a 61" big screen TV to the table :)

Thanks for the welcome.  I'm trying to secure a lot at Soliel, which is in the Carmel Valley (just east of Del Mar).  Everyone is making a big deal about distance, but it's only a 15 minute drive to school.  I will need to find a roommate for an apartment though while the house is being built, and hopefully someone who will want to rent a room when the house is done.

I think a week or so before school starts would be a good time.  Details TBA :)

I wish some of these complexes had webpages, its frustratingly difficult to find out about places when you're on the other side of the country. I am hoping to get a place within walking distance of campus. I have found it incredibly nice during UG to be able to walk to campus.

Dave-

Have you been to USD?  The immediate area is pretty ghetto and the school is on a big hill, so even something right across the street would be a serious trek up hill.  There are university apartments (425 sf and $6000 a semerster, I think).  The rest of the area is houses.  I found some good sites for apartment complexes on www.forrent.com, www.apartments.com, www.sdreader.com, and www.craigslist.com.  I am looking at Clairemont or downtown.  What area(s) are you looking at?

It is right across the street from the entrance to campus that is lower on the hill.  Only studios...looks not so nice on the outside, no idea about the inside.  It'd probably be a 10 minute walk to the law school.

Two things of interest:

1) I received a letter offering me a $12000 renewable grant
2) I got an apartment 5 minutes from campus.  Sweet two-story two bdr townhouse in Clairemont Mesa.  $1140 a month, 1000 sf.  If anyone is looking for an apartment for USD, you can do a lot worse than Clairemont Mesa.

What were your numbers Jeff? Or index score if you dont want to reveal numbers. I havent heard anything about financial aid.

That townhouse sounds like a nice deal. I'm amazed you could get a decent 2bedroom for under 1200. I havent even started seriously looking for a place. I wont be able to visit the area before I come in august so I have a feeling housing is going to be a pain.

One of my coworkers just bought a house and is trying to rent out his condo in Fashion Valley now.  It's $1600/month for a 2 bed/2bath, 1100sq ft with a huge master bedroom that's big enough for 2.  I'm hoping to find something lower in price, but if any of you are interested, PM and I'll fwd you more details...the location is just down the hill from USD.
Title: Re: Headed to USD?..Who are you and where are you from?

My grant is need-based.  I guess since I'm going to be supporting my wife and my boy (who is going to be born in the end of June) they figured they better give me more money.  I had a 3.14 GPA and a 156 on the LSAT.

I am really happy about my new place.  I thought I would have to resign myself to living in a 600 sf 1 br and pay about $900 - $1000 for it, which is pretty standard for that area.  We went back to check it out again on Memorial Day and it is a really quiet area, which is going to be paramount for me.

My sister lived in La Mirage for 2 years and it is gorgeous, its like a resort.  Several pools, good gym, huge inside, the complex seems like its own little city.  My sister also told me that Archstone is very nice as well, I'm not sure about pricing but I think she told me that it wasn't excessive considering the quality of the place and the Mission Valley location, which is nice

I visited every one of the ones you mentioned this weekend.  I am a big spender and have zero problem dropping money, but these are so overpriced that I couldn't see straight.  La Mirage, for the low sum of $1500/month offers paper thin walls and formica countertops, with nothing but the finest vinyl floors.  All of these places looked like party central.  I'm not sure what I'm going to do, but in my opinion, don't look towards the high dollar mission valley places.

Hey everyone, nice to see so many USD 1L's on board.

I'm from Portland, OR... 27 yrs. old.

I will be living in the Presidio Terrace Apts., not the best places in the world (and spendy!!) but I thought convenience was the biggest asset when navigating that first year.  After that I will look for something better.

Getting anxious to start (I do mean anxious, not excited!)  I'm getting sick of all the LS horror stories and just want to get going myself.  Nervous though.

Went to undergrad in Colorado.  Been living in Denver and Canada since ug.

My twin brothers are best friends (went Kindergarten through HS) with Salim Stoudamire, for all you U of A people on here.... He's a nice kid.

Did you actually see them in person? Were they nice, cramped, dirty? I thought about those b/c the proximity would be a huge benefit and so would having less bills (cable and internet and power paid) but I don't want to sleep in their sh**ty bed and use their crappy furniture.  I wish there were unfurnished campus apartments.

I didn't go in them.  But I did meet a student outside of them (they look like a Motel 6) and she said they weren't great... and too spendy for what you get... but that she was glad to be so close to campus her first year since she spent so much time on campus.  And that it took her 5 mins to get from her apt. to the law school.

I just didn't want to the extra stress my first year.  And I don't want a roommate at this point because the last thing I need is to not find solace in my own home when school is so stressful.

From website:

"Interested graduate and law students who will be enrolled full-time can request campus housing by making a $250 NON-REFUNDABLE prepayment at the Cashier's Office in Hughes Center and then contacting the Housing Office in the Missions Crossroads Building to request the Housing and Dining Services Contract packet. We will accept applications on a "first-come first-served" basis and keep an interest list when all apartments have been reserved for the following semester.

I got on the wait list at the end of March, before the first deposit deadline.  I was at the school visiting (I've been living in Canada, could not get there for the admitted students thing...).  I knew that I wouldn't be able to go apt. searching this summer so I got an early jump on the Presidio.  I wouldn't be tooooo surprised if the wait list is long now, but honestly, if you have the time to apt. search, and/or if you want a roommate, I think there are way better living situations than the PT.

Where did the rest of you go to undergrad. (besides all the U of A kids)...?

FYI - I just moved into my apartment, The Gardens, behind the Target on Balboa in the Clairemont Mesa area.  I like it there a lot.  It's kind of an older unit, which makes it cheaper, which attracts nothing but the finest white trash crowds, but it's not that bad.  I takes me less than ten minutes to get to Fashion Valley and about the same amount of time to get to school.  I live next to the 805 and the 163 and about 5 minutes east of the 5, so I have good freeway access.  I was just looking for a good place close to campus (but after reviewing the Linda Vista scene, not too close) where I can set up base camp to attack my first year and I think I did all right.  I only pay 1140 for a 2 story 2 bedroom 1000 sf apt.  My kitchen is the size of my living room in my first apartment after I got married.

Also, there is an abundance if excellent restaurants within 3 minutes walking distance from my apartment.

So, good luck in your hunting.  I can recommend my area (corner of Balboa and Genessee).

Congrats on getting settled Jeff! Just wanted to add a restaurant suggestion in your area, if you haven't tried Sipz, definitely try it. It's an Asian Fusion restaurant that is all vegetarian and mostly vegan. Everyone I take there (vegan or not) loves it. It's not expensive and the food is great.

I have family in San Diego so I'm just going to get housing when I move there in August. I think its just too risky to sign a lease on anything that I haven't seen myself except for university housing. An old friend of mine has an apartment in a complex in del mar thats very nice, 2br for 1600, but I don't think I'd want to live that far from school.

Yeah, thats a good price for that place in Del MAr, and its  a really nice area, but i dont want to live that far either.  I have heard that the traffic around the freeways merging there has become nightmarish, everyone I know who lives down there complains about it.  I have seen some decent deals on craigslist on sdreader.com, but I am just worried that most of the good deals will get snatched up as all the college students move into town.  What part of SD are u planning on moving too, dave?  If anyone is interested in a roommate for an area close to campus, Im looking to spend up to 800 bucks a month per person on rent, PM me, I would like to have a place secured within the next few weeks

USD really blew it on the roommate list. They should have mailed it out back in May with all that other info to the people who paid the 1st deposit and then have people send the questionnaire in with their 2nd deposit. This would have given us an extra month with the list to find housing. Needless to say, I'm not overly impressed with the competency of the admissions office.

I'm still planning on sending it in though.  I'm going to try to go visit San Diego the weekend after the 4th of July and hopefully drive around and get a feel for the area.  I'm planning on moving early August.  I've been looking on the internet, bit I'd rather physically see the place before I commit to anything....

Try roommates.com - I've never used it myself, but I have heard good things about it from other people.

Does anybody know where the Friar's Village apartment/condo complex is in relation to USD? I've seen a lot of rooms/condo's for rent there on the housing page but can't seem to find a location for the place.

Friar's Village is just up Linda Vista Road (going up hill)...they're all independantly owned...the unit I happened to look in was completely rennovated and looked great inside, also the neighborhood felt very safe.

And YES to football/bball parties!  :)

Hope everyone's having a good summer...I quit work last week, so mine's been just great!

I activated my account but I wasn't clear on where to go to open email or what the server address etc to enter so outlook can get the email.

Maybe there's a mistake and you weren't really accepted...:)

I couldn't activate my e-mail at first.  I started to get really mad at USD.  Then, just now I tried to do it again and realized that you need only the last four digits of your USD id number.  I think the -09 might be the year you are set to graduate?  There is a link somewhere on the Unet page that has instructions how to forward your e-mail.  You have to log on to do though and your account is activated only one hour after you register, so I can't get onto it yet.

On an unrelated note, my boy was born on June 17 at 7 lbs. 7 oz.  KSWB came out on Father's Day and gave us a 45 second sement on the 10 o'clock news.

I think that the email activation thing automatically assumes that all new email accounts are being created for undergrads (hence the -09).  I kind of wish it didn't have that -09 too, but oh well, I'll get used to it.

Thought you guys would enjoy this story...

I was at my gym (in Tucson) where I noticed a guy wearing USD shorts.  I asked him if he went there, and he gave me the, "No, my girlfriend did reply."  I told him I was just curious since I was going there for law school.  Just then another guy turned around and said, "You're going to law school there!?  I got my LLM there, I loved it."  We went on for twenty minutes and he couldn't say enough nice things.

Always nice to hear positive, completely unsolicited comments. :)

I had no trouble activating my email account but now can't log on to it.  Has anyone had any success or even tried?  I think it's the password that's wrong.  I wrote down the password they gave me after I activated the account but still am unable to access it. Correct me if I'm wrong, username is the first part of your email: jblow-09.  Password is: first initial (lowercase), second initial (lowercase), last 4 #s of USD ID and then -08?  I thought it was weird that email ended in -09 and the password would end in -08.  However, that's what I wrote down.  I also tried the above combo with -09 with no success.  Any ideas?

I have been able to log in to my email account and change my password.  My original USD assigned password ended in 36, so I think that the last two numbers are just random.

AZWildcat, I'm so glad that you heard good things about USD from the guy at the gym.  The son of a woman who works in the office that I do went to USD Law School and loved it as well.  She couldn't stop gushing about what a great experience he had there.  On a related note, I'm starting to get somewhat excited/anxious about school starting.  I found an apartment and roommate in Mission Valley, so I'm glad to have one less thing to worry about.  I really think these next 2 months are going to fly by--soon we'll all be at orientation!  Scary... haha ;)

Got it working, but it took a few phone calls.  The -09 is indeed lame.  Last day of work is the 29th of July, and I can't friggin wait any longer.  Anyone have an idea of what they want to actually do with their USD degrees?  I personally want to be a prosecutor.  As an added bonus, I have an acquired taste for Ramen and tuna out of a can already.  So I'm game for a life time of penny pinching.

You could steal mayo packets from the cafeteria to add to your tuna ala can.  I personally will probably need a forklift for the crate of Mac and Cheese I'm going to buy at Costco.

I agree.  Besides, my Mac and Cheese comment was more to the fact that most of us have to focus on living frugally, unless, of course, you are independently wealthly or have a sugar momma/daddy.  I'm not saying it won't be fun, most of us will just be roughing it for a few, kind of like going camping I guess...

I too have talked to a few USD Law grads and I've heard nothing but great things (okay, MOSTLY great things)  Its nice to hear some positive things about USD, especially during those moments late at night when I'm wondering if I made the right decision! Setting up my e-mail account yesterday made me realize how close we're getting to orientation. I for one am trying my best not to stress out that much and am just going to try and enjoy the rest of my summer, as it'll probably be a while before I have the chance to completely relax like this.

p.s. I LOVE the Cheesecake Factory.  There's one a few miles away from my house right now and after reading those posts it's all I can do to stop myself from driving over there for some take-out...  ;)

I am signing a lease tomorrow and I NEED a roommate!  I'll take possession August 1st.

It's in Ocean Beach, mere minutes from school.  1900 sq ft, granite counters, sub zero fridge, good sized bedroom, garage space, only need to pay for electricity (we'll split it obviously).  All of that for $1900/month

Here are three quick pictures..  Building is one the in the center, occupying the second and third stories.  What better to soothe your law school anxiety than the sounds of crashing waves? :)

Actually it's not expensive.. go check out Portifino, La Mirage, Archstone, etc apartments just down the street from USD in Mission Valley.  They want ~1500 for a one bedroom with garage-- they're sold out.  That is out of control, not this place. :)

And yes I'm single. :)  I'm sure we'll throw a few law school get togethers there too.  I'm just really hoping for a USD law roommate.

Well, I'm going to be living at Archstone....so I must be out of control. ;) :)  JUST KIDDING.  Don't worry, I didn't take offense to anything you said.  Rent is expensive, there is no two ways about it.  I'm getting a two bedroom apt and the total rent is appx $1800, plus $45 per month for a garage (optional).  It's worth it to me because I feel safe there, and I like that it is new/clean, and there's also a great pool and fitness room.  Not to mention the great location--close to everything.

AZWildcat, your house (apartment?) looks gorgeous though.  I grew up in a house close to the beach and it was fabulous.  Have fun there!  Hope you can find another law student willing to pay that kind of rent.  Did you send in the roommate sheet to USD?  That would probably be the easiest way.

ps- let me know when the party is, i'll be there... hahaha ;)

Haha good post.  By the way my name is Dennis, not AZWildcat (stunned I know :) ).  I didn't put my name anywhere on here because you never knew who might be looking in, but now it doesn't matter.

I'd assume that you already have a roommate?  Who I'm really appealing to is the person who is looking at getting crushed in a one bedroom apartment.  According to their website, it'd be ~$1400.  $1900 is what I'd want in general, but I was thinking about it more, for a law student I'd split the rent, so $1750.  That's $350 more than Archstone, and look at where you're at and what you get.  My impression of the high rent apartments was that they were filled with 19 year old party kids, snorting on the weekend at best, spending dad's money.  Obviously you didn't see it that way, so I'd be interested to hear why I'm wrong.

I'll be filling out the roommate form tonight.  It's a condo, takes the second and third (top) stories.

Yep, I have a roommate...a friend of a friend, we hit it off immediately, I'm definitely excited.  I'm sure there is a fair share of undergrad party kids at Archstone (and every complex in Mission Valley), but that doesn't really bother me too much.  After all, I'm not THAT far removed from them--I just graduated 2 weeks ago (no coke for me tho! lol).  That's not to say that I'm a huge party girl, but still.  Seriously though, I was just looking for a really "nice" apartment complex.  Maybe I'm being completely superficial, but I wanted a clean, well-kept, new-ish place, and Archstone pretty much fit the bill.  The rent didn't seem outrageous to me for what you get (keep in mind, I'm coming from Orange County, housing costs are comparable here).

So does anyone have any idea what our class schedule will be like every day?  I wish I had some idea...I like to plan things well in advance! haha :)

Just curious to see where everyone is re: loans (that is assuming that you are actually taking out loans....)  For example, what providers have you all chosen, etc. You know, all the really fun stuff ;)

Also, when is everybody planning on moving to San Diego?  I can't believe orientation is in just over a month!  Hope everyone is enjoying the last of their summer!
Title: APARTMENT
Post by: LawDeeDa on July 11, 2005, 11:10:08 AM
Hello! I am a 2L that was accepted to USD as a transfer. I will probably (90% certain) be attending there unless I get in to another school I applied to.

I have a room available in a two-bedroom apartment in Mission Valley (close to school; no freeway needed to get to school, just drive down Friars Rd). Quiet roommate wanted; no smoking, no drugs, studious, easy-going, clean/neat in common areas, cat OK.

It's also possible I will be moving out so the entire apartment would be for rent, but I won't know until I see if I get in to the LA I school I applied to.

So if you are looking for a room, or for a two-bedroom apt, email me for more info:
flaviaberys (at) hotmail (dot) com

Thanks!

Bad News for those of us waiting on the roommate list, I called today and they said even though the deadline passed they're still waiting on some people's information and the list won't be sent out for another week.  :-\

Damn, that is crazy how last minute the roommate list is.  If its another week before it comes out, that is less than a month before orientation.  I got nervous about waiting on the list, so i just signed a lease for a studio down in Mission Beach, right across the street from the beach.  i got a killer deal, 750 dollars and a month to month lease.  Now everything is really starting to set in for me, its getting so close.  My lease actually starts in a week and a half but I dont think im moving down till the first week in August.  What about the rest of you, when are you coming down?  We still need to plan that LSD happy hour as well.  My suggestion is Old Town San Diego for a margarita.  Oh and I went with Access for my loans

I'm moving around August 15th.  The lease at my apt actually started this week, so I will start furnishing it and such little by little until I move in permanently.  SD is only a little over an hour from where I live now, so I don't really see a need to move there early to "get settled".  Besides, I still have a job and friends at home, and I know no one in San Diego (acutally I'm lying, I know 2 ppl), so why get there early and be a loner? haha

I can't believe that school starts so soon!  I'm kinda in a constant flux between excitement and nervousness. :)

ok i'm not going to usd though i do check up on this thread from time to time as i have just moved from SD after spending 8 years there ... it seems that some of you are a little confused about housing. despite what seems to be the dominate paradigm here you can in fact get very comfortable housing arrangements for under a thousand dollars per month. i think anyone looking to spend 1900 (+) a month for rental housing while in law school is either 1) completely nuts or 2) in possession of a very large amount of meaningless money - you'd be much better advised to purchase something small (i.e. affordable) and sell at the end of your tenure at USD, if you plan to move away. the real estate market in san diego is out of control and it doesn't look to be slowing anytime in the near future. buy something now (if you have the means) and sell three, four years down the road. it would not be unreasonable to expect a ten percent profit. the market is that insane right now. for those of you without mountains of disposable income, there are affordable rental opportunities in SD and i'm not talking about el cajon. i lived in a fully furnished one bedroom apartment in wind n'sea and paid 800 per month .. it was one block up from the beach and yes, it had an ocean view. i just moved from a three bedroom house that was two blocks up from the beach with an enormous back patio with unobstructed, sprawling ocean views (and is now on the market for a million dollars) for a 2250 / month. we had four people in the house and for my own bedroom i paid 650 a month plus utilities ...

there are bountiful private rental opportunities, and you'll find that if you look hard enough there will be renters who are apt to take someone who is presumably responsible and clean (i.e. you, the responsible and clean law student) for a more reasonable rent compared to what you'll find at archstone or la regencia or costa verde or any of the other mass produced cookie-cutter apartment buildings that cover pretty much all of utc and mv. not to sound too preachy, but if i were going to go to USD i'd be looking in the pb / mb area as you can find semi-affordable / reasonable housing in a diverse and active area. not everyone in pb is a knuckle head 24-7 party animal either and you might find the personality spectrum you encounter in these areas refreshing, especially as anal type-A obsessive compulsive law students battling it out with other anal type A obsessive compulsive law students for law review and class rank position etc. a little break in the routine if you know what i'm getting at?

anyway, my two cents as someone who has spent mucho tiempo in sd ....

I was surprised to see people paying so much too. I'll be a 1L and hope to pay under $850 a month. I'm going to head down around August 3. I've never been a fan of the "cookie-cutter" apartments mentioned earlier, but I just visited a friend in TN, and his apartment complex has a pool where people hang out all the time, and it seemed to be a pretty good deal. It seems like that could be a good way to go.

I'm not sure when that roommate list is coming out, but feel free to email me if you're looking for a roommate. I don't have a place yet, and I'm looking for 1 or 2 people around my age (24), easy going, etc.

That $1900 apartment was actualy 1 room in a $3500 3bdroom. So the actual rent wasn't quite so outrageous.

That $850 1 bedroom sounds incredible. I'm sure at least thats not typical.

Yeah apartments are not as bad as some make it out to be. I rent a 2/1 spacious cottage with a fenced yard with gardner and garage (and tons of street parking) for $1050 in a really cool and extremely safe area which is walking distance to my favorite bar, but still quiet. I lived in the UTC area for undergrad and I couldn't stand all the huge condo/apartment complexes. My mom lived in one for awhile and it always felt like a hotel to me, plus the parking always sucks and the walls are paper thin.

Is anyone else here having a hard time with their immunization record?  I am having a hard time with the principle of the matter - after all, USD is in the Mission Bay area, not the Sao Paolo Brazil area.  Why do I need to have a TB test that has been done in the last year? I got all of my vaccines before I started kindergarten.  But, here I sit with bandages on my arm and with $103 less in my bank account, but fear not fellow students - you will not get Hepatits B from me.

That's funny because I had the exact same problem, my doctor said as long as I hadn't visited a 3rd world country recently there was no reason to get it, but then USD started busting my balls about it. It really makes me wonder about the ghettoness of Linda Vista if a TB shot is required to live there.

Title: Re: Headed to USD?..Who are you and where are you from?
Post by: JeffB on July 25, 2005, 12:51:08 PM
This may be really stupid, but here is what my philosophy is now: I'm just going to relax and enjoy the rest of my summer.  Yeah, I'm getting a little anxious (in part because I haven't figured out my work schedule yet), and I know that it is going to be harder than I can imagine, but I figure that there is no way to completely prepare for something like law school, so I'm not going to waste my last few weeks as a free man trying to do so.  I read Law School Confidential and another book about Acing Your First Year.  I've also talked to a bunch of different grads and current students of USD.  Basically, I think that by this point, if you're not ready for the rigors of law school, you are not going to get yourself there in a few weeks.  If there was one definite way to prepare for law school, then there would only be one such book, but last I checked, there are about 12 million and all they are are collections of people's opinions based on what they did to do well.  Everyone studies differently.  Until they come out with JeffB's Law School Prep Book for USD Night Program, I'm going to be barbecuing on my patio and running in Mission Bay.
Title: Re: Headed to USD?..Who are you and where are you from?

This whole 1L thing is way overblown by people who never had to work in school.  By those people, I mean about 80% of all college grads.  I hate to call out names, but history/poli sci/family studies etc majors, I'm talking to you.  Those were the people calling me wanting to party every night, and I tried a few of their classes.. If I had one of those majors, I would have had so much time I wouldn't know what to do with myself.

I refuse to believe that LS is that hard.  Partial differential equations, now that's hard.  Writing down what judges say, outlining them, and converting the ideas/laws into a chain for use on an essay doesn't seem like rocket science to me-- understanding canonical perturbation theory and how to apply it does. :)  As we learned quickly in engineering, there is a big difference between hard and work; they are not interchangeable.  Law school will be a lot of work.  I think the people who are freaking out are those who didn't apply themselves in their undergrad, and aren't confident enough when they're looking at what's about to come.

As a history AND political science major, screw you  ;D . That said I think law school is going to be difficult but I think the biggest problem people have is adjusting to the different approach to learning needed for law school and the time commitment. People think it's going to be just like undergrad and it's not.
Hahahaha Nice :)

I think it will be just like undergrad.. an incredible time commitment, a lot of thinking outside the box, and staying on top of a massive work load.

So how does everyone feel about orientation?  I am excited but at the same time bummed to have to miss work.  I feel it might be a lot of nonsense mixed with registration, a financial aid interview (which I already did online), and some pre first day of school class/assignments.  Does anyone have more info about the exact schedule?  I got the packet in the mail this week but am weary of taking 3 days off of a temporary serving job (del mar racetrack) when I feel as if orientation may be a few sorta pointless hours in the middle of the day.  I don't want to miss out on the experience and know they are willing to make exceptions for busy people but am torn.  Can anyone offer advice/insight?

I called the admissions office today.  I too am not looking forward to taking off 3 days in a row of my job.  Especially when I was notified months in advance (when I submitted my time off request) that I will be needing to take two off and then a few weeks before school starts I find out that it is actually 3.  I digress.  I called today and they said that after you pick up your registration packet you are free to go.  Luckily for me, I am the first group.  I have alreay toured the campus and went to the information session and the alumni dinner.  I'm practicly ready to graduate.  All I need to do is go to the classes and read my books.  So I don't want to be herded around again.  I was told though that the orientation sessions will be all day.

Hey, so everyone should know by now, but orientation is Aug 18-19.  Details can be downloaded at http://www.sandiego.edu/usdlaw/docs/admissions/handouts/orientation.pdf
And remember to get your shot record up to date (such a pain in the behind).

JeffB, I'll see you for the night section.  Also, apparently they are offering one 4 pm section for the Lawering Skills class for the night school people.  Meets 2X a week.  I may try that and just work more after class. Beats late classes.

Hi,

I just got off the wait list this past Thursday and I'll be attending San Diego.  I'm kind of freaked out how quickly I have to move and get things in order.  They never mentioned to me about getting TB shots!  And I have no roommate list because I haven't had the chance to send the deposit in.  So if you know of people who are looking for a roommate, I need to find one quickly.

Stats:
Male
30 years old
Undergrad at UC Berkeley Genetics and Religious Studies majors, Graduate work at UC Davis in genetics.
I plan to go into bioethical legal issues, but may go into IP if I realize there are no jobs in bioethics and law
I'm really laid back, get along with most everyone, don't care if it's a male or female roommate.
Looking to spend less an $900 for my own room in a 2 bedroom place
Don't want to be too far from campus, within a couple miles.

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Adam

As bad of a taste at the admin office has left in my mouth, the orientation packet helped to change some of that taste.  It seems well thought out, though the "introduction to the soractic method" class I don't understand.. the professor calls on you, big deal.  I could care less if I embarrass myself. :)  When I don't want to embarrass myself is infront of the judge with my clients looking on.

Also, I am doing a 1L barbecue at my place at 4pm, August 14th (Sunday).  If you're interested, please PM me.  I'm trying to keep it around 10-15 and I'm already at 8 RSVPed, so first come first served.  Don't get mad at me if we run out of room and you're left in the cold! :)

I do have my first complaint about the USD admn.  They sent me a letter saying that I will be getting a 12k grant every year.  I checked my fin aid and they said that they lost that letter and have no record of ever sending it out, but if I can produce a copy to them, they'll give it to me.  Good thing I kept a copy.

I hope I didn't forget any books...The nice book lady at the store helped me get all the books. Did you pick up any optional books? I didn't- Some optional books were sold out, too. Maybe some people are making the "mistake" of picking these books up?

So I think I got accepted into the Day-program today.  The man who handed me my registration packet said,"I assume you're still interested.  You're on the list to move from the night program to full-time.  Talk to admissions if you haven't heard from them by Friday."  Cool.  I guess I should hold off on buying my books though.  : )  See you all tom.

Hey Jeff, I was there at 5:30 today (the joy of having a last name towards the very end of the alphabet!)...maybe I'll see you at orientation?  I'll look for a ninja, haha  :)

I'm in section B!  I spent $500+ on books today  >:(

And lucky you, having no classes on Friday!  I'm digging the 2-3 hour breaks between classes...plenty of gym time before it gets crowded during the night hours...

I found it a bit funny that they were giving out drinks at the very last event when everyone was going to be driving home afterwards.

Good point, Dave.  That was also right after we watched that how to survive law school 101 where we watched that movie about stress that "Matt" had from his DUI.
