Title: Waitlist movement - post here!
Post by: blueyes7 on April 19, 2005, 10:52:46 PM
So for all of us on waitlists with absolutely NO indication as to when (if ever?) our file will magically be taken out of that purgatory...post here if you're on a waitlist but have either been accepted or rejected.  Thanks!  Here's to hoping that the waitlist isn't completely without movement...

it would be helpful if everyone could also include additional active steps they took to get off the waitlist (wrote a letter of interest, additional LOR, a writing sample, etc.)

Thanks for keeping this updated guys!  So it seems like W&L and Miami are the only waitlists with any movement so far...right?  I'm on 5 myself (pulling myself off of one tomorrow but still holding on like crazy for the other 4) and am hoping that sooner or later there will be some news about the others too...

I have been waitlisted at 6 schools so far. Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Oregon, Pittsburgh & Pepperdine.

Just this week I have been accepted off of the Waitlists at Pittsburgh, Oregon & Alabama!

This should inspire everyone a little..........

alas, the anxiety is over.   Roll Tide!

Congrats to all who got off the waitlist!

Did most of these schools have deposit deadlines of April 15?  That would make sense.  For some reason Penn's seat deposit is only due at the end of April :-\

My applications were all complete mid-January. My gpa is terrible but my lsat is pretty good. I pursued these school pretty intensely after being notified that I was waitlisted.
Emails, letters, phone interviews, etc......apparently that really does work.

Good luck to everyone else who is waitlisted. Just let them know that you are still interested and if accepted, you will attend.

I congratulate those of you who have managed it, but does anyone else find it strange that W&L is giving out big bucks to at least a few people off the waiting list this early in the game?

Do you think this fact is normal for them, or might it be a sign of widespread trouble getting seat deposits this year--W&M accepting several people off their waiting list nearly two weeks before the seat deposit is due also strikes me as odd (at least at schools near W&L/W&M in rank)?

Obviously, it's too early to say with certainty that there is something weird going on, but speculation is fine by me.

I think they are trying to fine tune their class by picking select people off the waitlist.  I also wonder if sending out all those fee waivers is coming back to bite them in the ass since so many of the original acceptees seem to not be taking them up on their acceptance offers.  I hope my number comes up soon though, I would go in a heartbeat.

i visited campus this past week and was told that they had begun pulling from the WL (I wanted to tell them, dah i already know that...LSD) but i didn't show my a$$, from those that have posted on LSD about their offers off the WL it seems as if they are taking higher LSAT scores to improve their numbers, whatever it is, i wanna be next.....the wait coninues....

Yea, I find the nice amounts of money thing a bit odd (odd in a good way though)...but my guess is that they were a bit conservative with regular decision offers (from what I was told when I called to check on my application status in March, they said that they received a lot more applications than they were expecting)  and are trying to buy a complete class (given their small class size)...I thought I was going to get in regular, but I'm still pleased at the offer and will probably be going there bar a UVA acceptance or a similar offer from GW or Vandy (I doubt any of the three scenarios will happen).

Accepted from the GULC preferred waitlist... 3 minutes ago. I sent a cover letter along with my waitlist reply form that talked about how much I loved GULC. They sent me an email last friday asking me to reconfirm interest, then a few minutes ago I got an email from Andy Cornblatt that "I wouldn't be disapointed when I checked my mail." I have until May 9th to decide.

Got Dean Cornblatt's not so subtle e-mail acceptance on 4/26 from GULC.  I was admitted for 2006 and put on the preferred waitlist back in march.  I pretty much just responded to their waitlist offer by telling them to consider me and saying i would like to go.  Sent an e-mail checking in recently, but I never sent them anything new in terms of letters (recommendations or begging  :) ).  Go Hoyas!  Hoyas are gonna infest your garden! Found out yesterday that I'm off the U. Penn waitlist... I'm shocked! I didn't honestly expect to get off it, so when I replied to their waitlist email, I sent a pretty cheesy email back about how they should pick me. I actually bullet-pointed my strengths. I dunno, maybe that helped?

Hi,
I don't know if this will help anyone this late in the game, but I was accepted off of Catholic's waitlist at the end of March, a little less than a month after I was waitlisted.  Sending new information, letters of recommendation, and reaffirming my continued interest seemed to work quite well... :)

I've already mentioned this on another thread, but for the sake of having a consolidated thread for posterity...

In off NYU waitlist.  Applied 1/6, waitlisted 4/14, letter dated 5/23.  172/3.61.  Sent in no additional materials.

I have no idea.  I am still deciding and very confused.  It's the $ that's scaring me.  NYU would be about $70K more than UVa, as I have $15K per year at UVa and am assuming I will get nothing from NYU.  Ugh!!!

Does anyone have any info on the Washington University, St. Louis waitlist?

I called today but I got the standard "we have been receiving a good amount of second deposits, so we're not sure when we will go to the waitlist" answer.

So freakin' frustrating!!!!

70k is a big difference, and if u ask me, not really worth it, u won't be losin much (if anything) goin to UVA.  NYC of course is the better city, but that's a lot of money...

On Monday I was accepted off the waitlist at Willamette.  :)

I've been "deferred" at Seattle U and on Monday I was notified that I was no longer being considered for the "summer start" program, but that I should keep waiting for regular fall admission and/or the part-time evening program.

Right now I have seat deposits in at 3 schools:  Hamline, U of Montana and Willamette.  I am close to telling Hamline "no thanks".  I am having a hard time deciding between Willamette and Montana and waiting to see what Seattle U will do.

Well, I think I just got into U of Chicago via phone call.  Now I"m thoroughly confused.  I had accepted (and gotten excited about) attending UVa (with $15,000 per year scholarship).  Then I got into NYU, which I think I just effectively turned down.  Now I find out about Chicago.  Is it wrong of me to go to UVa when I've gotten into the CCN range schools?  UVa is just giving me SO much money.  I'm confused.

UVA is a great school. I don't think you can go wrong here. Just decide where (location - wise) you would be happier. Plus, coming out of school with less debt is a huge advantage.

Well, I turned down NYU.  I couldn't pass up the money, although NYU would have worked really well for personal reasons.

Also, I got in off the waitlist at U of Chicago yesterday.  So now I'm confused all over again.

Well, NYU is probably the best of the three. If you turned them down, you could certainly do the same w/ Chicago (unless they gave you $$ or you had some good reason [like a fellowship] to want to go there). You sound like you just need to be reassured. So, here goes: UVA is a top school w/ a great reputation. $15k is a lot of $ (plus the cost of living in VA is probably less than Chicago [& definitely less than NYC]). Go there, do well, & succeed. Those are probably the kindest words you'll ever hear from me so don't go fishing for more compliments.

I got in off the waitlist at Fordham today -- notification came in the form of an email letting me know I'd be receiving a letter in the mail soon. I'll wait for the letter, but unless there's a very generous scholarship I won't be going -- I've already given a tuition deposit at NU.

It seems like Fordham doesn't really care about people's interest in the school.  They seem to be pulling people off the waitlist based on the numbers they want.(I'm not complaining, just stating what appears to be happening)  The other guy who got pulled off the waitlist said he didn't submit any additional info either.  But at least they are going to the waitlist, so that's good news.

U  of A just sent an e-mail to all their admitted students saying that they were aware that many of their admits were holding more than one seat.  They stated that although they did not have names, they have numbers, and kindly asked for those of us holding on to more than one seat to make a decision.  Well, I have been holding out for my financial aid for quite some time and STILL have not received it, so I went ahead and withdrew.  The point (or points) being that U of A's waitlist will probably move, and that if LSAC is sending this information to all schools, schools may start urging their students to withdraw from any extra schools that have not yet withdrawn from.

On a side note, has anyone heard any more about U of Washington's waitlist moving?  I am aware of one person who was accepted off of it, and was curious to know if there were any more...

I think the schools submit the information and then LSAC releases it to other schools.  I'm not really sure how it works.

Just b/c of the rankings??? I'm curious if there are other reasons?

And are the rankings really that important???
Title: Re: Waitlist movement - post here!
Post by: charseven on June 17, 2005, 10:36:04 AM
i didnt say anything about rankings, i said somthing about narcotics. youll be dealing with less of the former and more of the later at usf.
i posted also under your other thread. my opinions stem from the reputation of uc schools being better. the fact that more firms higher out of uch than usf. theyre highering for the same geographic region so if youre from the better school then you have more of an edge. look at things like student teacher ratio, bar passage rate, employment after graduation, loan repayment programs for low income lawyers, clinical opportunities, the reputation of  various law reviews, the influence of law faculty in their professional practices before teaching, those types of things make hastings a better school. and while rankings may or may not matter depending on your career path, such a wide variance between uc hasints and usf in rankings indicate a wide variance between quality.

hey ambs, i've had much innner turmoil, too ;) i ended up turning down both of my oregon schools - as much as i love oregon, i don't think the schools were best suited to me - so it looks like minnesota for the fall. still waiting to see if i hear from wisconsin (went from deferred to WL since they overenrolled). it was really really hard to decide to pick up and go to minnesota since i don't want to live anywhere but here, but i think it will be good and hopefully i can work hard enough to come back without too much trouble. i've also thought fleetingly about trying to transfer but it's not something i count on being able to do. anyway, i'm so so happy for you getting in, not only did you want it so much, but you totally deserved it! i'd still love to do a bay area get together before i go if anyone else is into it.

Post by: fredm0404 on June 21, 2005, 01:19:51 PM

Sorry it took me a while to respond to this. This was a tough decision for me, since I visited NU and loved it. In the end, I really wanted to stay in LA (I live near UCLA now) and the fact the price tag is $40K less over three years doesn't hurt. Plus, to be honest all of the input I got on NU wasn't great -- might have been harder if it were Penn or Columbia. Still, I think the bottom line is that they're all great schools. Also, I was admitted to the joint JD/MBA program at UCLA -- not sure if I'll do it but I like the option.

Georgetown ~5/15
UCLA -Yesterday

I'm leaning toward Virginia right now. I'm really eager to see if Columbia, Chicago or NYU come through.

congrats on UC Davis.  i don't know if w&m's program travels THAT much further than UC Davis.  i have no idea where either school is ranked, but i do know they're both great schools.  i think you need to think about being with your hubby & working in CA or if you want to uproot everything for the sake of ???

i'm really not sure if leaving CA is the best thing for you.  have you thought about the type of law you want to practice, where you want to practice...etc??? i hear CA's bar exam is pretty difficult--it's one of the hardest, right up there with new england states...the learning curve and the contacts while in school there helps.

i think it's weird how these top schools are still admitting people now & no word from other schools are being posted here.  i wonder if they're waiting for the "storm" to end...

interesting watching this thread..

I e-mailed UC Davis today about the status of their class and waitlist.  The director of admissions, Sharon Pinkney, e-mailed me back and said they have a class of 207 right now and were hoping for a class of 190, so it appeared unlikely that they would use the waitlist.
