Title: Is Tulane the most loved Law School On here??
Post by: heyitcouldbeworse on April 17, 2005, 09:24:23 PM
From what I've seen, the only non-T-14 Law school that people on here are really excited about going to is Tulane (myself included)  People are picking it over BC, BU, Emory...I'm picking it over Vandy.  Can so many of us be insane, or is Tulane grossly under-ranked?  Is Tulane just a school that's on the way up? I especially think that their Intl law program and clincs don't get enough attention.
BTW, are any of you who are heading to Tulane interested in starting a little e-mail group list or something so we can start to get acquainted with one another?  Once we find out what sections we're in, how about forming a preliminary study group?  I assume we'd be a good group, b/c many of us here are abovve their 75th percentile so we'd be on the same level basically)

I am pumped for Tulane.  I am turning down a slightly higher ranked school (nowhere close to the quality of Emory) and couldn't be happier.  In terms of an email group, count me in.  It would be nice to get familiar with some people.  Drop me an email anytime.

Count me in for the e-mail group - Aaron12900@aol.com -- Ya I don't know why everyone is so psyched for Tulane... however I myself am ;-) I actually think that it's partly because they responded so early (at least to me) which gave me time to research them, feel wanted as my first time ;-) and so on... plus the different post cards they send me twice a week and a representee on her vacation in Boston taking out all the accepted students in the area to lunch/meeting helped to (oh the fact she was a red sox fan REALLY helped...) I also got an e-mail from a dean at the law school who was also an alum at my UG, very generous scholarship awards... All of these little things add up and make me excited

I noticed this too. I have not decided for sure yet but I am glad so many people have good opinions of it and I have been able to get a lot of info. As soon as I decide, I will be in for an email group as well ;D

I find it interesting that Tulane is so popular, considering they were having a huge financial crisis just a few years ago.  So much so they were thinking of ridding themselves of D1 football.  Even my undergraduate advisor warned me not even to apply to their graduate program because faculty were jumping ship.  It is nice to see them making a strong comeback from their financial difficulties.  Congrats to all of you attending, I'm sure you will love it!

It's one of the top schools I'm considering right now. I'm trying to wait until I hear from Emory (they said the decision would most likely be made by today), and then I'll make my final decision. It looks like it's gonna come down to Tulane, WUSTL, and possibly Emory.

For all the people who just wrote about how overrated Tulane is I beg to differ one of the reasons it is so liked on this site is that it is under rated- no other school in its "ranking" places nearly as national as Tulane... you can check their placements if you don't believe me.

I like it beacause not only is it a good school that places well, but it has a ton of intangibles that make it very appealing. Its in a great city, the alums love it, and the cost of living is dirt cheapn  (compared to Los Angele, where I live now). I also think the kind of people who think "hey, it might be a blast to live in New Orleans for three (or more) years, are my kinda people. Seems like there are more cool people and less nebbishers around the Tulane posts. And I like that.

Let the haters hate,

I second that emotion....As for New Orleanians--I have lived there for a little bit before, have a lot of family there and come from a long line of Blue Jays, but my family transplanted to DC...

I agree that Tulane people are really psyched about it...and that's great...however, I get the eerie feeling that people go their looking for this cushy cute collegy experience...I, for one, am not going to Tulane though I was accepted because A) it's in the South and for as cool as the school might be something tells me it's crawling with conservatives and B)i went to wash u and felt that i lived in a bubble...tulane seems very similar... C)ive spoken to tons of people that go there and they always describe it as "relaxed" "fun"  a place where you can have fun and party...unfortunately, to me that translates into Tulane being an easier and less competitive place...which is bad especially considering it's located in New Orleans , far away from the big cities where legal jobs are difficult to get...Please dont think that I am bashing this school because I was SERIOUSLY SERIOUSLY considering going there for a long time...I do however think that it's impt that people logging into this site not get a totally one-sided view about any school...I am ecstatic about NOT going to Tulane...and something tells me Im not the only one! :-*

Thanks for your input, best of luck wherever you are going.

Its true that Tulane does seem more "fun" than most other places, but come on, your going to be at law school for THREE years. I am the kind of person that could stand a pressure cooker environment for three years, but would rather not put myslef in that situation voluntarily.  If I can get a solid education, be around good people, and actually enjoy studying the law for a while, than bring it on.

BTW - Every school I turned down for Tulane had pro's and con's, I would not say that I am "ecstatic" about NOT going to any of them.

There is a reason why there are so many different law school with different dynamics and different enviroments. Everyone is different and people are looking for different things out of law school. To me, "less competitive" is a good thing. Something I really want in a law school, along with "relaxed" and "fun." Not because I plan to slack off and party all the time but because I see no reason to be miserable for three years. I don't like highly competitive enviroments or constantly serious surroundings. To me, life is too short to torture myself for three years in the prime of my life. And the fact that Tulane is "far away from the big cities where legal jobs are difficult to get" is also fine with me. I don't want to be in the "big city" or care about BigLaw (though if you look at the stats, I think you will find Tulane places very well in NYC, the mother of "big cities".)
This is not to say that your point of view on the school is wrong by any means. I am just saying that everyone is looking to get something different out of their law school experience. From the sound of it, Tulane is NOT the place for you. But the people who are on here touting this school are doing so because they know all the things you just said about it and they see those things as GOOD not bad.  :-*

I'm not sure what gave you that impression, but it's not true. You should've seen Tulane & Loyola right before the war. The city itself is pretty politically mixed, except in the suburbs, which you'll never go to anyway. I'll put it this way - I'm uber-liberal, and I've had a fantastic time living here for the past 10 years.

I think that depends mostly on the person. I felt like that in San Francisco, but never have here. Other people I know feel like that here, but adore S.F.

This part we agree on. It can be hard for people to adjust to New Orleans, especially if they like to party. If you don't have that under control when you get here, you'll be in trouble. Does that translate into poor job placement, though? Their employment stats look pretty decent and they place very well in NYC (if you can stand a few years of New York...blech). I haven't looked into their job placement as much as they other schools I'm considering since they're already in the city I'd really like to work in, but I've heard anecdotes and seen stats indicating they do pretty well in New England and Texas.

I haven't noticed such sentiment. I couldn't care less about Tulane so perhaps that forms a bias on how I interpret certain posts (or even which I choose to read).

just guessing

Hi oblood05,

That was me that posted about the UHaul in a separate post. Also, I'd like to join the discussion group. My email is andrewjacoby2@yahoo.com. Any other Chicago-based, Tulane-bound folks are welcome to contact me if they are interested in sharing a UHaul.

Good idea to get in contact with everyone via email.

I just got back from New Orleans where I attended Jazz Fest and took some time to view the campus for the first time. It really is a beautiful area of the city. I don't have an apartment yet, which I'm worrying about. I hope I'm able to set aside a weekend later this summer to go to Nola and secure an apartment for August.

While I know that Tulane is supposed to be a good school and all, I find it impossible to take them seriously.

The reason: an episode of Mission Hill (am I the only person that loved that show to death?) where Kevin, spazzing out about the idea of not completely nailing the SAT, points at his Yale T-shirt and screams "This Y might as well be a T...for Tulane!  Tulannnnne!!!!"

That show has completely colored my thoughts on this school forevermore, and no amount of reasonable argument will ever sway me.

2 words:  crawfish boils!

I went to Tulane undergrad but have been away from New Orleans for 2 years now.  There's no place like it, the culture is incredible.  And the food.... my mouth is watering and my arteries are clogging just thinking about it!

It's a great place to live for a few years.  Best of luck!

Anyone who turns down vandy for tulane is retarded. Ur job prospects will blow at tulane and you'll get out making 70k. Tulanes stats are beyond flawed. Just letting you know, beware! Tulane's name will get you nowhere.

I am a current Tulane law student and I would highly recommend not choosing Tulane. It is not a national school, though they wil work as hard as they can to convince you it is. You are better off going to a regional school in the geographic region in which you intend to practice. Tulane is a regional law school whose region is the deep south. You have been warned.

Of course, if you enjoy being treated like sh*t by the administration and living in a little bubble that has absolutely no interaction with New Orleans per se, come on down!

Otherwise, I hope that you will save yourself from an experience you will regret.

Wow.  Man if you have had that experience with the administration or NOLA - PM me and I will buy you a beer or two.  Seriously, while law school is time consuming - I have been able to get out and enjoy the city quite often.  The administration gets swamped at times, but they have always gone out of their way to accommodate me.

Tulane definitely places best in the South-Southeast, but does surprisingly well elsewhere.  Personally I plan on staying in the South so its not a big concern of mine, but I have met quite a few students at the median who have decent midlaw jobs in NY (what kind of reach are you looking for?).  Sure, some students are disappointed that they did not get their dream BIGLAW job, but most of the students I have met feel satisfied with their options.  CDO is kinda weak, but as long as you don't rely on them - they are a pretty decent tool.

Honestly, not to be hater or anything, but if you want to work in the South, why would you choose Tulane over Emory and Vanderbilt. Some of the original posts on this thread talk about having made this executive decision. It just boggles my mind!

I will go to Tulane next year. It's so exciting to me!  I have never been to America before. I have so nice opportunity to spend 2 years in New Orleans. I hope this experince will be helpful to my future  professional development in my country. I choose Tulane becauce my ex-colleague recommended it to me. She also got a JD degree from Amercia.
But I also worry about my oral English and listening. It's not easy to catch the meaning of native speakers in the beginning.  I have attended a English-training course in my coutry, which costs me a big money.  Maybe it is a little bit useful, maybe not. Whatever, I'm coming. I hope everything will go smoothly.
