Title: Duke Priority Waitlist
Post by: tealight on April 01, 2005, 06:47:20 PM
Anyone else on it?  Does anyone have more information about it?

It's for both summer and fall.  And yes, it contains the words "priority" and "waitlist."

Did you apply for the dual degree program?

Yes, I applied for a joint degree program.

This is interesting. I received an email from Duke stating that their waitlist was not ranked.  Perhaps this priority waitlist pertains only to dual programs?

Perhaps they don't rank within the separate waitlists and don't consider having one list as priority and the other regular to be the same as ranking WLers.

Then again, maybe this priority status only applies to dual degree applicants.  Too bad we don't have duplicate applicant of the OP to concur.

I applied to the dual degree program...and MY LETTER said that waitlisted applicants weren't ranked either.  So, maybe someone misread something...or I'm just a reject....

I didn't misread anything.  I received one letter for the waitlist and a second letter for the priority waitlist.  Ranking means rigidly placing people on a list in order of preference (I'm assuming), so having two separate waitlists doesn't necessarily constitute ranking.  The two lists can still be fluid.

It is too bad we don't have another person with whom to compare  :-\  I assume that this is because there are not many people on the pw?  I'm in the dark as much as you guys are.

What is the difference between a priority waitlist and ranking?  So does that mean that there are at least three different lists (1. waitlist for the fall, 2. waitlist for the summer, 3. priority waitlist for the summer)?

It seems like that's extra work to have so many different lists floating around.  Why not simply rank both lists (summer and fall)?

The priority waitlist seems to extend to the fall... so four waitlists??

Has anyone called or e-mailed the school to ask?  I'm sure a simple phone call would answer the question.  My guess is that the priority waitlist applies only to the joint degree program, as my waitlist letter (for regular fall admission) didn't say anything about a 'normal' vs. 'priority' waitlist.  I can't imagine that they would have a priority waitlist ABOVE the regular waitlist, and not tell those of us who have been waitlisted.

Hey guys!

I am also on the priority waitlist at Duke and am applying for a dual degree program. I believe they only have two waitlists: a priority wl and a regular one. I'm not 100% sure but this is what I think based on information I got from previous posts saying that they were accepted off of the priority wl for the Fall start.

Ok...I am thoroughly confused here.  And I am going to call the office in order to find out the difference.  However...

I applied for the dual degree program.  It says that I will need to call in mid-June and state whether or not I wish to remain on the waitlist for the fall entry.  Also, according to the previous posts, there was a separate letter for people on the priority waitlist.  (One saying that you were waitlisted in general and another saying that you were on the priority list)

I know that I only received one letter...so I'm obviously not on the priority waitlist.  So there MUST be AT LEAST three waitlists...priority waitlist for dual degree...regular waitlist for dual degree...regular waitlist for fall entry.  As stated earlier, I think it's a silly way of waitlisting people...they might as well rank everyone on two lists (dual degree and regular JD).  And where is the post saying that someone was accepted off the priority waitlist for the Fall start?

What dual degree program did you apply for at Univ of Denver?

Just talked to the Duke Admissions Office. There is a priority waitlist for the regular JD program. Wish they'd told us there were two waitlists in their letter--saying there was no ranking and then not mentioning the two lists is pretty misleading. They say the priority waitlist is "short," but they won't give numbers. Arghhh. Guess I can rule out Duke, then, since I'm didn't make the priority list.

I applied to the MA (psych) and JD program.  STILL NO OFFICIAL LETTER from them.

As for the waitlist situation, that just SUCKS.  I just called the office also, and she said, "If there is a priority waitlist, those individuals will be notified."  THE END.  I'm assuming that there are four lists now.  Priority for summer and fall...and then the regular waitlists for summer and fall.  They really should've told us that...it IS very misleading.  OH well, VANDY GAVE ME A LIL MONEY!  I wanted to be a "Dukie" but not that bad.

I'd say so. Obviously if there is a priority waitlist then there are some sort of rankings. I'm sure I'll have much worse things to say when I put on my UNC hat tonight. GO HEELS!

Thanks for withdrawing!

I am going to hang in till the first week of school (Waitlisted at Duke) because my husband is accepted to Fuqua (Duke's Bschool) and we are moving there in August.  I didn't know there were different waitlists. Just hope there is room for us others (non-priority) on the WL too.

After looking at others numbers and stories, I really am amazed I am waitlisted to Duke.

Courage folks!

i just got the regular waitlist letter.  did anyone ask duke if anyone on the regular list ever gets in?  it seems like having a priority waitlist means that everyone on the regular waitlist was basically waitlisted as a courtesy.  would they ever take someone off the regular list before the priority list was completely emptied?

I just receive a letter today from Duke saying that I am now on the priority waitlist.  I guess this is a good and a bad thing.  It's good because I was moved from the regular waitlist, but now I guess I'm at the bottom of the priority waitlist.  :-\  I've submitted about...4/5 letters of recommendation (I know that's a lot, but I had to pull out the "big guns;" I also couldn't use some of these in the fall when I applied).  So, there's still HOPE.  I also sent in a letter on continued interest today through the mail.  Good luck all!

This gives me a little more hope. Were you able to speak to any of the admissions deans over the phone about the WL procedure? I'm considering giving them a call...

I called the office about a week ago.  They really weren't trying to give me any information about the waitlist procedures though.  They weren't helpful at all.  But you can try calling...it wouldn't hurt.
