Title: I'm a kid, I've always wanted to be a lawyer since age 5, i'm 14 now. Help pleas
Post by: Romko on March 24, 2005, 09:53:31 PM
Hi,
My names Roman, and am finishing Middle School. This is my last year, and I'm finishing a highschool credit. My question is, I want to go to law school after HS, what classes should I take in highschool? Should I try really hard, and take all the harder classes? I'm currently registered for Honors English, Honors History, Double Honors Science(Biology) and Geometry 1-2 (thinking about doing it in the summer and going to Algebra 3-4). I was advised by friends to join Debate, take English Law, Business Math, join the FBLA (Future business leaders of America).

I'm a kid, and I don't want to screw up. I've always wanted to be a lawyer, and want to become successfull.
I'll appreciate any advice, i've been googling and trying to find advice and what books to read.

Anything you recommend is appreciated.

Thanks
Roman

EDIT:
My parents have been making me to a special school on weekends to learn Ukrianian since i was about 4 years old.I know how how to read, write and speak fluently exactly like English. I have been bored so I don't go anymore, but I am still forced to Read ukrianian books. Ukraine and Russian are very similar, will this benefit me ever? International law maybe? Or is this a waste of time to continue it.

O yes, sorry for double post but I forgot to say this.

I've been reading around, and poeple say "Highschool Grades don't matter"

I live in the seattle area, and have looked up Collges/Univs. and for the Univ. of Washington you need 3.6 GPA to get in atleast, from what I know. What do you think about this?

Law schools require the completion of at least a bachelor's level college degree.  You won't be able to go directly from HS, nor would you want to.  Be a kid, enjoy life.  If you don't have one, get one!  It will do you some good in the long-run, trust me.

I am being a kid, I play Ice hockey as a sport and am very active in it. I'm not going to mess around in life and then hope. I'm going to give it all I have in Highschool and college, hopefully I will become a good lawyer who doesn't have to lie a lot.  ::)

Ah, that youthful boasting.  How reminiscent of high school locker room conversations.

But seriously...

Kid, we have given you the best advice we can.  Try to enjoy your life now because you will NOT enjoy law school, no matter how much you have always wanted to become a lawyer.

Go to college, get good grades, but take time out for yourself too.  High school grades don't matter and no one law school admissions committee will ever care that you took some double honors mumbo jumbo in HS.

Balance is key, you should never completely sacrifice social life for academics or vice versa.

BTW, shouldn't your username be "Romka" instead?

Lets say I get a B or a C in a highschool class, should i retake it online where i could easily get an A(my firends do this) is this bad on your transcript if you do it once or twice, because if you retake the old grade doesnt affect gpa, etc? The first cut for univ is gpa.

Thanks for the advice, although it was very brief and general which i had knowledge of.

Heh,
As far as my name, its Roman, there are different variations of nicknames for Roman. Yes, Romka is one, but it is mainly used in Russia, although I have been called that. Romko is more the ukrianian way to say it as a nickname

Another reason why i picked Romko, was because Romka.com was taken, and i bought a domain.

you should only worry about your high school grades to the extent that they affect where you go to college.  they won't matter when you apply to law school.

No.  Do better on others and have some fun.  Most colleges will forgive one, maybe two lower grades, and i don't think retaking would be overly helpful.  and put some leadership and EC involvement feathers in your cap, both UG and LS like that.

the advice was brief for a reason.  it is immaterial to you at this point for the most part.  after you're in college, start thinking about prep for LS

yo my man - take the advice everyone has been telling you. ENJOY life now. geeze, ur not even in HS yet. relax. get great grades. honestly, thats all u can do at this point. sure, u can go and join all the clubs in the world in HS, but thats only going to affect your college admissions. the only thing law schools take into account are college GPA and LSAT score. sure, u have other "soft" factors like a personal statement, reccomendations, etc. But it all starts with your grades and LSAT. and since there is no way u can prepare for the LSAT now, focusing on getting great grades is the only thing you can do right now.

on another note, when i was beginning high school, my adult career was the last thing on my mind. relax and put things in perspective. im sure u dont want to look back on ur HS years as only a "molding" stage for college and law school. u want to be able to look back and laugh at all the funny/crazy/drunk/idiotic things u did, girls u slept with, how man classes u cut, that great hockey game u played - not just a means to getting to where u want to get to.

I'm a 1L now, and trust me, once u get here, your life is over. Live it before u get here, cause once u do get here, there is nothing else in your life.

For crying out loud, kid, keep studying hard, but at the very least learn to kick the bottom of a glass door and grab your nose in pain at the same time. Or desperately point out to people in other cars that their wheels keep going around. Something. Ask people at the supermarket what aisle the dehydrated water is on. I'm not suggesting anything illegal, or even destructive. Just have a little fun while you can get away with crap like that.

romko- you'd better pay attention guy, because there is lots of terrible advice on this thread.

you MUST take all of the Honors/AP classes you can in high school. it is absolutely necessary that you get a 4.0. anything less will not suffice.

your goal for Undergrad has to be Harvard, Yale, or Princeton. Join all of the clubs you can, try to get involved in EVERYTHING.

keep up with your ukranian and augment that with learning two other unique foreign languages, perhaps arabic and chinese to be trendy.
you will need to be in the 99th percentile for the SAT.
study every night for at least two hours until you can get perfect scores in half the time.
once in undergrad, you need to double major in something law schools respect, a good combo like math and economics, or biochemistry and political science.
anything less than a 175 LSAT will screw you, so you'll need to buy all the prep books now and start practicing. take kaplan and testmasters practice courses too..
once you've done all this, you should be in good shape at HYSCCN. don't even bother applying to any of the other schools, as they are only worth the time to attend if you have a full scholarship.

good luck!

Ok Roman --

I have to agree with Binary Code here.
In high school I basically goofed off. Hey it was waaaaaaaaay fun then but you know what? I regret it. I had some personal problems that affected my GPA, but I also lacked guidance.

So, if you are a real kid and really seeking advice: DO the BEST you can at everything you can while you are young because choices you make now will impact the rest of your life. High School grades affect college choice. College choice (and grades) affect law school choice. Fun is good, but don't ever let it interfere with your grades.

I have to agree with BinaryCode as well.  I pretty much did everything outlined in his post, EXCEPT crack 175 on the LSAT.  I am now SO SCREWED.  I'm only going to a top 14 law school (I'd rather not name it, because its pretty shameful compared to what I was aiming for [Harvard, Yale, Stanford]).  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't screw up or you'll end up like me.  Follow BinaryCode's advice if you even want a chance at succeeding.

Young man, you have come to the absolute worst place for advice at this stage of your life. This board is comprised of egomaniac, obsesive-compulsive, anal retentive, degenerates who resemble the accounting monster in Dilbert. The only thing a 14-yr-old boy should be concerned about is girls, and that is a full-time job in itself. You seem like a smart kid. That will do the trick all by itself. Worrying will KILL you.

Roman, This may not be exactly the advice you've been looking for, but it is sincere. It is admirable that you are already looking toward the future, however I beleive your approach is flawed. You ask what activities to participate in and what books to read to prepare you for law school admissions. I think tailoring your ec's and reading material for one particular goal is inappropriate at this point. High school (and even college for that matter) is a time of exploration and self-discovery and is not the time to limit yourself in any way. Participate in activities that you love and enjoy, try lots of new things and don't feel bad about quitting the ones that you hate. Read all kinds of different books: silly, funny, thought provoking, challenging, easy, whatever. Question authority, question your peers, question yourself. Try out lots of different things to help you to figure out who you are: activities, books, classes, sports, girls, cars, general debauchery. Doing so will help to make you a more well rounded individual, and in the end if you still decide to go to law school, it will make you a better lawyer. Life is not linear, and if you continue to march along this straight planned out path toward law school, you will miss out on a lot of awesome opportunities. Good luck.

Do the best you can but remember that LS will never see your HS grads. Go to a good college were you will be happy and will be able to do well. Also remember that GPA is much more important then were you go. A 3.8 from a state school looks a lot better then a 3.2 from Harvard. Figure out what you want in a University (location, atmosphe, major) and go there wether it is Princeton or WSU. A good HS GPA will give you those options. Just becareful you don't burn out. By the time you start LS you will have been in school for at least 17 years. Thats a long time for anything. Take time to travel, goof off, intern, whatever. Keep your GPA up and take start worring about the LSAT Spring of your Junior year (college). That way you can take it in June of that year and if need be retake in the fall. Just remember that most schools average score. But above all learn to enjoy life will doing well. Most people can only do one and either wind up unsucessful or overworked and stressed out. Start learning how to do both now and you'll do fine in life.

Since you did ask for concrete advice, I'll add this. If you haven't already, then you should read To Kill a Mockingbird and then read Catcher in the Rye. Or don't read them if you don't want to  ;)
And when you are old enough you should watch Election with Reese Witherspoon and Rushmore with Bill Murray - I think they are both rated R though.

Go cow tipping at least once.

Break Curfew at least once.

You know that hot girl you like?  ASK HER OUT.  If you get shot down, so be it, but at least you tried.

That's all I can offer to a 14 year old.

No offense, kid.  You REALLY need to lighten up.

If this is a flame, I'm going to feel mighty stupid about answering this in a serious manner.

Romko: If you've ever seen a law school application (not too hard to find.  Go to pretty much any law school website and you can probably download one), you'll notice that virtually no school asks what your high school GPA was.  Does it matter?  Of course, if you want to get into a good undergraduate college.  Does it matter to law schools?  Not that I know of.

Basically law schools seem to look for hard and soft factors.  Hard factors include your undergraduate cumulative GPA and your LSAT score (120-180 with 150 being about 50th percentile, I believe).  Soft factors can be just about anything: college major, activities/clubs in college, volunteer activities, work experience (I put work experience starting at age 16 through the present since I'm going to law school straight out of undergrad), sports, languages (like your Ukranian!), etc.

As for taking specific courses, the best advice is to take courses that force you to think analytically (statistics, math, science, etc) and courses that require lots of writing (like research papers).  I've been told that undergraduate major doesn't particularly matter too much.  Pick something that interests you, and do well in it.

Of course, this is all stuff that you'll be thinking about and doing at least 4 more years from now.  The only thing I can say right now is keep your options open; sometimes peoples' interests change drastically after they've been exposed to a course they took during high school or college (that happened to me.  I went from being pre-med to choosing to declare one of my majors in Jewish Studies after taking a Hebrew class during my freshman year in college).  Explore lots of things, and most importantly, do things of interest to YOU.  Your interests are important, and who cares what law schools think?  Personally, I feel that most schools don't care what you're involved in (if it's legal!) as long as you're passionnate about it and can bring that out in your application materials.

So there you have it.  Until college, just study hard in high school, but don't forget to have some fun while you're there.

Hope that helped a little (and I don't get teased for trying to be so serious about everything. ;)).

You have to pretend to make a phone call, first. And the dialogue has to be very poorly scripted.

"So, is there any way you can come fix it now? It's broken, and I need a little fixing, if you know what I mean."

Hi,
My names Roman, and am finishing Middle School.

Roman,
Your in middle school and taking high school classes and thinking about law school. Get a life and play some PS2. HTH

Hey, Roman.

A B or even a C will not matter in high school.

EDIT:  I know this is an old thread.  I wrote this just in case Roman is still kicking around, and for anyone out there like him.

Nor will a D, or even F's, as I can attest to.

why don't you.  You are 14. We actually have to worry about this stuff.  By the time you get ready to apply we will be on the addmission committee and intentionally denie anyone named Romanko or whatever the hell your name is.  Because why know that you have no life.

Debate club will turn you in to a giant a*hole.  Take it from me.  If that's what you want (and it sounds like it is), then go for it.

I didn't take all of the hardest classes in high school to get into law school -- I took them because I was bored.  And if you are that bored, don't take triple AP Econ double Honors global studies program IB -- try taking community college classes or classes at a local university while you're in high school.  Nobody cares about my GPA from high school, but for the record, it was good.  And when I'm a lawyer, nobody will care about my GPA from college.  (Heck, law schools didn't even care about my GPA from college since I choked on LSAT day...)

From looking around my living room without getting up I can tell you that these are books that you MUST read or you will not get in to college.  Anywhere. Ever.

David Sedaris, "Me Talk Pretty One Day"
Gerald Graff, "Clueless in Academe"
Mark Haddon, "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime"
George Orwell, "1984"
Mary Roach, "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers."
Dominic Streatfeild, "Cocaine"
Daniel Benjamin and Steven Simon, 'The Age of Sacred Terror"
F. Scott Fitzgerald, "Tender is the Night"
Alma Guillermoprieto "The Heart that Bleeds"

Good luck!

Good call -- didn't notice the date.

Oh well, maybe he'll log in and it will tell him he has new replies.  Or maybe he's already realized that he was a tool.

So, it seems that UG is the most important step to getting into Law School--obtaining a solid GPA and LSAT score.

So, how does one go about doing this?  Since I never really worked in school, I lack a studying method, and the like.  I don't really know how to study effectively.  Advice, please?

Prior to responding to this post, please direct yourself to my thread, linked in my signature.  You can respond there to my questions there as well.

Thank you,

kyle

Hi Kyle.

You can't rely on others to tell you how to study.  You need to figure that out by yourself.

Here are my thoughts after going through your thread.  You may be bright and consider yourself mature well beyond your age, but you are a little too confident about yourself (your comments on your LSN account are quite arrogant).  Typically, the most undesirable law school applicants are those who "always wanted to become a lawyer (and never considered anything else)."  Wanting to become a lawyer is not a bad thing, but you should pursue your goal with more flexibility.  I think creativity and versatility are important traits to have as a lawyer, and you do not want to become an attorney who knows only about the law and fails to think any other way.

You say you are open-minded and know exactly what you want.  But you will definitely grow and mature as you get through college, and you will consequently view and understand yourself differently.  At this stage of your life, if you think you're crazy about law and you love it, you probably have no idea what you're getting yourself into.  Taking law courses in HS means nothing.  You need to have more flexibility with your future plans, consider other options, and try to analyze things with a wider perspective.  Then, if you still want to become a lawyer after your senior year of college, it will only show that a legal career is truly for you.  And having various work experiences can only help you, though applying straight out of undergrad is not necessarily a bad thing.  One final advice: you should learn to take criticisms in a positive manner.  Even if you disagree, try to learn something from them.

I really respect your aspiration to become a lawyer, and wish you the best of luck.  Here is another useful thread.  Check it out.
