Title: Austin HH Thread
Post by: Anastasia on March 17, 2005, 09:12:46 AM
The Austin LSDers are saying goodbye.  :'(

In homage, we're deleting our posts.  (Apparently Cela, Ellie and I were the only ones who did this1)  Crow is leaving his so he looks like a crazy guy talking to himself...which he was doing most of the time on this thread!  :D

If anyone wants the email address of a poster, I have most of them.  It was fun guys...

Good luck in law school!

Love,
Ana  :-*

If I didn't have to be in New Orleans the next day...

Tell you what Lane.  I'll organize another one when I move to Houston.  It can be a "Holy Cow!  What de we get ourselves into with this law school thing?  Boy, do I need a drink! Happy Hour"

From the looks of it, I'll be living in Florida by then.  :(

No!  Keep your chin up!  Hey did I read somewhere that you used to work at KGSR?  Just wondering.  I worked at the Austin Chronicle for a little while years ago just because I thought it would be unique experience...it was..and the free SXSW wristband was nice, too.

Yup. Did it for the booze and babes. Yeah, right. The booze, anyway. I did student radio at KVRX, too. Those were the days...

I'm a girl too.

Too much to read, but since I'm one of the organizers (thanks Anastasia :)  I should at least know what time?  I work on campus, and to drive home (which is far) and then come back at 6 doesn't sound too good.  Did we pick a location?

sorry I'm out of it.. I was so busy doing menial tasks, I forgot to log in for a while and now I'm dazed and confused.

interesting...  we're all on the north side.

i'm not in pflugerville, per se, but it's just easier to say so.  i'm on 35 and grand avenue parkway, 2 exits north of all of you.  but i shop at the HEB and wal-mart on 35 and parmer.

Count another one on the North side. I live right next to the Arboretum and work at a video game company on 360 next to 2222. Nice area! I will miss it.

I'll be there tomorrow if it's still on! Did we decide on a time?

you all should wear stickers with a "hi, my name is (LSD screen name)"  that'd be too funny.

Seriously, how else are we going to find each other? Someone gonna stand at the door with a sign reading LSD? Would they LET you hold a sign that said LSD?

It's Austin...you'd be propositioned so many times you couldn't enjoy your lunch.

Hey!  I hate coming this late to the party, but I'm in Houston and just saw this thread.  When's your next shindig?  I have to make the commute to Austin at least twice a month, so I'd love to know when you guys have something going down.

BTW, is everyone trying to get into UT Law, or are some of you already there?  I can't imagine any of you guys would really want to leave...

By the way, your quote creeped the heck out of me.  It's from Dachau...a concentration camp...and work didn't bring you freedom there.  "Arbeit Nacht Freiheit" = "Work brings freedom" -Dachung Prison Camp

Sorry, meant to put Dachau.   Regardless, it was supposed to be ironic.  I do realize where it came from, even if I got the spelling wrong.

I was just trying to come up with something for everyone.  You seemed to enjoy the religious debate the most..although yes, I'm the one who likes to bring it up.  ...And you are not a religious freak! My favorite topics of convo are always the ones mother advised against...sex, politics, and religion.  Most people think they're controversial, but I just love hearing what people have to say about the three as opposed to arguing against opinions.  You can talk about the weather and fashion all day long, but if you want to know what makes people tick, go for one of those three.  Money is another one, but even I feel that's a little too gauche for discussion sometimes.

Orma - I'll pm you with a description the day of the event so you can find us.

What's up with the rest of the country?  The Austin LSDers are on their third happy hour and no other areas seem to have caught on to the fun.

Given that I am about to be a poor college student again, I need to again collect the list of cheap eats and drinks.  This is a nice start.   :)

I have a question.  I asked everyone this question at the UT Admitted Students Day and they all looked at me like I was crazy.  Where in Austin had very potent, purple Margaritas?  I went to this place in about January 2003, had two and had trouble walking out of the restaraunt.
Title: Re: Austin LSD Happy Hour FRI 4/29
Post by: Anastasia on April 19, 2005, 12:59:06 PM
Baby Acapulco's - The"Bombarita"
Baby A's is kind of a cheap & cheesey college hangout.  There are locations all over the city.  The margaritas are potent (made with everclear), but the taste is not so hot.

Ana's Margarita Suggestions

Best Margaritas in town - ZTejas.
I love these, but they run $5-$8. There are several different kinds, all of which should be tried. Outside seating is available..(a margarita drinking must.) ZTejas is located on West 6th btw Lamar and Mopac.  There's another one near the arboretum...not quite the same.

Best cheap happy hour margaritas - El Arroyo.... $.99 on Thursday until 6 pm.
Located between Lamar and Mopac on 5th St.  Outside seating available.  Gets pretty crowded during happy hour.  You can park in the lot across the street after 5ish.

Best Mexican Martinis (Non-frozen margarita in a martini glass) - Cedar Door or Trudy's
Cedar Door is downtown around 2nd St.  Outside Seating.  Trudy's is just north of campus with outside seating.  There's another Trudy's on N. Burnet...not quite the same.

Not the best, but still damn good: Chuy's, Guero's, and Maudie's.
Chuy's are all over, but the best one is on Barton Springs Road.  Guero's is on South Congress.  Everyone should try it at least once.  Maudies is a hole in the wall on Lake Austin Boulevard w/outside seating on the sidewalk.

Okay, maybe I am a lush.

Baby Acapulco's - The"Bombarita" (You don't want to do it again though...everclear was so much easier in the early 20's.)

Best Margaritas in town however are at ZTejas.

Best cheap happy hour margaritas - El Arroyo.... $.99 on Thursday until 6 pm.

Best Mexican Martinis (Non-frozen margarita in a martini glass) - Cedar Door or Trudy's

Not the best, but still damn good: Chuy's, Guero's, and Maudie's.

Okay, maybe I am a lush.
This looks like a great list to explore.  Now I am really glad I decided to attend UT!

Ana's Best Places to Sit Outside and Drink Beer

Crown & Anchor
The One and Only

Gingerman
Want to got to 4th St, but avoid the 4th St scene?  This place has a zillion beers on tap and a nice patio, but the beer can get a little pricey at times.

Draught House
Formerly known as Draught Horse.  Near Central Market and the Medical Center.

Opal Divine's
On West 6th...They've also got a decent single malt scotch selection.

Little Woodrow's
On West 6th as well.  Can get a little meat markety at times.

Dog & Duck
In the north part of downtown.

Posse East
Right around the corner from C&A which is probably why I never end up there.

Billy's
Haven't been, but want to try.

Try BB Rover's on Research. They have a ton of beers on draft, it's away from downtown, the food is good, etc.

Ana's Favorite Dive Bars

Deep Eddy Lounge
On Lake Austin Blvd.  Cheap beer, pool tables, and a jukebox.  Need I say more?  Oh yeah, bring your Benjamins.  The place is cash only.

Ginny's Little Longhorn
On Burnet road. Old school with pool tables? They used to do chicken-sh*t bingo.  Not sure if they still do.

LaLa's
Gotta love the Xmas decorations 365 days a year.

Cloak Room
A speakeasy near the capitol.  See your local leglislator three sheets to the wind.

Ego's
Three words...Blind. Piano. Man.  On S. Congress

G&S Lounge
In South Austin...brings new meaning to the term dive.

Poodle Dog Lounge
On Burnet...I believe.  Haven't been there.

Dry Creek
Meanest lady owner you've ever met.  Hours are seasonal.  Located somewhere near 2222.

Saxon Pub
Good local Austin music. My thanks to Lane for pointing it out. Let's hope it outlives the smoking ordinance.

I've been to the Poodle Dog. Not quite like your other Austin bars. I got into a fight, sent a guy to the hospital, and had to answer some questions for the men in blue. It's a lot of old alkies...great building.

What about the Saxon Pub? The place on S. Lamar with the suit of armor...

Kyle, don't even get her started on the whole secretary line of discussion...

Also, I don't really deserve any defense when it comes to messages about drinking, or pretty much anything related to drinking for that matter.  I figure that is one of my better qualifications for becoming a lawyer.   ;)

Shady Grove...

ahh yes. shady grove. i like it down there... :-)

Too pricey to get drunk there, though.

I'm gonna keep pimpin' Rover's until someone says they'll try it.

Club DeVille can also be a good place to sit and have a beer (or drink) downtownish.  Casino El Camino as well (plus the great burgers).

Oh, and I can't believe I forogot Cedar Door as a good place for a drink, though it was so much cooler in the last (I can't say old, that's too confusing) location.

I wasn't judging, just curious. Of course, I have to get defensive like that when I tell my friends I am going to law school. I like some ex-sorority girls and probably some ex frat boys. I am just hoping it doesn't have that feel in Law School.
Oh, I wasn't meaning to sound defensive.  I'm just usually embarrassed to tell people that I was in one because frankly, a lot of the stereotypes are true.

My wife is the same way.  She was a KD at UT but hardly fits the stereotype mold.  Unfortunately, a number of folks do, so she is somewhat "reserved" about volunteering that information to people she doesn't know.  She's not embarrassed, she just doesn't want to have to deal with all the explanation bs.

I am glad to hear that there are folks out that were in the Greek system, but do not always volunteer that information to others. I was in a fraternity at UT, but find that the conversation explaining it is not always worth it.

No prob.  That was the best band.  What was their name again?  And...If only you could have seen the look on the housemother's face when the load of us came walking through the door covered in mud.  I swear, I think she covered the whole place in plastic on Mudfest.  Eventually she got wise and stood outside the door with a hose.  :D

The Malemen

Mudfest was always a favorite of mine.

A law note, we would be involved in several lawsuits each year from apartment complexes to pay for repairs to the drainage systems from the mud.

You know this thread reminds me of? Three-Way (calling? on the phone? pervs.). You'd get home from school and call an friend and then get another friend on the line? Or two friends called a boy while one girl muted herself so you could find out if he liked you? Just me? Okay.

We didn't have that kind of technology when I was a kid. We were on a party line until I was in the third grade...

Well, as usual, the UT schedule is quite confusing depending on your seminar course, etc..  It depends on your section, but all have at least one class on Friday.

It's commonfor many grad schools to only have about a 1/2 day of classes on Friday mornings, and a lot of upper class courses won't meet on Fridays at all.  Sections 2 and 3 at UT have early (8ish) courses on Friday morning.  Not fun...

If it makes any of you feel better about your sad childhoods, I officially ask you all to Go With Me.

Is this a retroactive type of thing?  Like, now I can tell people you and I went together in 1985?  Who else wants to go with me retroactively?  By the end of the day, I can be the most popular girl in the 4th grade.  The effect could be life changing.

I'll have to pass on offering the same because I think that would have qualified as a felony based on my age in 1985.

Quote
Aw, limonjello, that's so sad! I remember that guy wrote in my yearbook "You were the only person who was ever nice to me." It was so so sad.

If anyone else wants to go, I told fellow LSDer Javert I'd meet up with him at El Arroyo on 5th Sunday afternoon to offer insight on the wonderful city of Austin. He'll be in town visiting for the weekend.

I would love to.  I never turn down El Arroyo, but I'll probably be out of town.

On another note, can we start back up our caddy conversation from yesterday.  I'm in the middle of a really dense bill analysis and could use some distraction.

I'm not sure I should even be responding to this, but...

Jackson Ruiz rocks, but is mucho $$$.  I eventually had to quit going there.  $65 for a guy's haircut is just painful.  I miss the mini massages, though.

Anne Kelso off Lamar and about 33rd is good and pretty inexpensive.  Ask for Brooke and tell her Chris M. sent you.  Also, a friend of ours, Brian, does coloring in a spot down where Electric Lounge used to be (yes, he has qualms about this as well).  I forget the name of the place, but he was once written up in Cosmopolitan for his coloring.  He used to be at Jackson Ruiz.

I can't comment on anything for pedicures or manicures, though I know Anne Kelso does them.  I'm not even touching a conversation on waxing.

Definitely RunTex.com, that's where I get my info. I know there's a 5k for the State Hospital real soon, and the News 8k is this summer, not to mention the Marathon Relay on 4th of July (speaking of, if anyone's up for it I'll do it with you, but I won't do the 12k part because I would probably die). There are more races coming up but I only do the ones that benefit a charity I like. They're definitely a great way to get yourself psyched to run and if you're really competitive like me, you'll push yourself extra hard to beat the person in front of you.

Hmmm. When I sign up for one (which I'll have to do soon or else have my motivation slowly dwindle) I'll definitely let you know.

Cel, your back on my friend list now that I have made the title of the film, and it is not something like "How Crow got dumped at the altar: Again" I hope there will be some soccer in the flick.

Rockin tomato, now that sounds like somewhere I would hang out, but I have never heard of it.

50 cent beers have never sounded worse. That will tell you how I feel right now and why I am not at work this morning.

Shoot Ellie, I forgot about soapnet. I don't know if we have that on my cable network. When I was living in the mountains writing my thesis, I tried to catch up with the old show. Since I have been a working stiff since October, I lost the flow. I may hit you up for that update.

Ana, the fridge, you need to get that framed. We have certainly earned high honor by being the best BS on the board.

Okay, back to being sick.

Oh there will be soccer. You bet your honeymoon money on the, like FIFA Cup or something, I don't know (this is your fatal flaw, don't complain. Every hero has one.). Anyway, the game will be going on while your wedding is and (spoiler alert!) as you and Kyle are fighting at the altar for Ana's love, chairs a-flying, we'll intersperse (sp) clips of the game as watched by the Mexican locals in the neighboring bar (in slow-motion, doy). Oh, did I mention y'all are getting married in Mexico? Because you are.

PS- Yay Rhode Island! My dad's from Lincoln!

Bad news kids.  It's looking like I might not make the happy hour.  My future roomie and I are scouting apts Saturday and we're riding up together Friday and she wants to head out from work.  :'(

Well, hell, that understandable.  Who isn't in a hurry to get to Waco on a Friday night?

Oh no! We seriously must have just missed you, we left right around then. Our friends were still there but we were exhausted and still had to get to the gym this morning. I was like, falling asleep in my pizza. I'm so sorry! I didn't think we'd leave so early, we usually don't go home til after nine. I think the boyf was just tired of being at a table full of people who are voting for the smoking ban.

Which reminds me- GO VOTE!

Grrrr... I could go on a rant about the tyranny of the majority and the desire of some to erode the rights of others (especially, business owners), but I won't do that here... ;D

Instead, on a happier note, is anyone going to Eeyore's on Saturday?  Not sure we can fit it in, but if I can, I'm going to take my daughter down in the afternoon.  She has a perfect hippie dress, and, of course, a pair of fairy wings.

Javert - Did you find an apartment?

Yeah, downtown, $609/month, with over 800 square feet. I got a great deal. The exterior is a little soviet, but the inside of the apartment is nice.

It's an older building (lease office guy said it was built in the 70's), so I'll pay more in air conditioning, like you mentioned in the car. However, I looked at the UT room and board budget and decided it was worth it. Plus, I'm five minutes from UT, which should be amazingly convenient.

Very nice deal and location, though dangerously close to a Taco Shack (and Waterloo tater tots).   ;)

Tots are good with everything.  They are the little black dress of side dishes.  I was extremely disappointed that tots were not a part of the new food pyramid.  A huge oversight in my opinion. >:(

For some reason, they aren't listed on the menu at the Lamar and Burnett locations, but they DO have them.  You have to ask for them specifically in place of fries (or whatever).  They are even better than Sonic, but be prepared to share as there are a lot of them.  Definitely something to check out before heading out of town.

Limon, did you make it to Eeyore's?  I nearly ran over half of the b-day party goers after leaving Crown and heading to Waterloo for movie rental.

Yep, we showed up for a couple of hours in the late afternoon.  She was in all of her facepainted, ponytailed, tutued, fairy-winged, pink cowboy boot wearing glory.  We had a great time, and she was very patient to wait with Daddy in the beer ticket line when there was so much going on around her.  She loved seeing all the costumes (of course, the silver man was there among all the other standbys) and the dogs running around and drums, etc.  It was a blast, and one of those great father-daughter times (sorry if I get "old" and sentimental here).  I'll post links to pictures when we get some up.

Of course, with all the different things, one of her favorites was riding the school buses they were using as shuttles because she didn't think she would be allowed to ride school buses until she got older.   :)

Hrm. Well, I just plotted from my apartment to Sixth and Lamar on my mapping program, and it guesstimates about six minutes (3.2 miles). Even if that's not technically downtown, it's good enough for me. I'm about equidistant from the library and booze, which is as it should be...

Anyway, Javert's new hood is still a good place to be. Plus, he'll get to get all up close and personal with the Crazy Train, aka, the #1 bus (I'm assuming you'll prolly be taking it or the IF shuttle?).

I'm still working that out. I may drive to the law school, or I could take a shuttle. It'll largely depend on the shuttle schedule and when my classes are, of course.  Parking is expensive, so the shuttle is probably my best bet....

Oh, and Javert, as to Austin pizza: Double Daves and Rockin Tomato have great buffets (Rockin T has cheaper beer, but DD has to locations right off campus). Gumby's has a pizza called the Big Ass and its freakin huge. And Austin's Pizza is good but the delivery guys are maaaaajor stoners and get very confused when you ask them questions. And then there's the heavenly Brick Oven. So, yeah, good pizza abounds.

Awesome. Thanks!

Awww...total cuteness.  :) I love being able to vicariously live the 'having kids' experience w/o actually having to have any of my own.  Who knows, maybe one day I'll mellow and decide I want one, too.

When I was younger, I never had a desire to be a parent.  I wasn't opposed to it, but I wasn't one of those people who always knew they wanted kids.  In fact, I thought that if I married someone who did not want to have children, then that would be fine.  Now, I can't imagine having missed this opportunity - take that fwiw.

The only time I even think of regretting it is the occasional weekend morning.  The kids aren't like alarm clocks that you can turn off I have unfortunatley found out.  They are up at the same time every day, and we have had a bad habit of being drunk and awake at 2 AM the past few Saturday nights.  The best you can hope for is to turn on Noggin and give them a sippy cup and hope that will buy you another hour.  ;)

Anyhow, I will stop there with the kid talk.

Oh Javert.  I hate to break it to you BUT, you are moving to Texas. It doesn't matter if you are an intellectual, pseudo-intellectual, redneck, high-society member, WT, geek, frat-boy or whatever, EVERYONE IN TEXAS DRINKS BEER AND WATCHES FOOTBALL regardless.  You need to start learning to love these two things now or otherwise you will end up suffering severe repercussions professionally, socially, financially, etc.  Tsk, tsk, tsk.  Am I going to have to hand-raise all you Texas newbies on my own?

Generally agreed.  However, you CAN get somewhat get away with this if you agree to drink whiskey or scotch (or tequila in some parts).  No mixers except for water should be required, and you definitely have to be able to drink beer if no whiskey is available (which should never occur if you  prepare yourself appropriately).

I do watch football. I watched football every Sunday throughout the pro season this year. Beer simply tastes awful, though. I may try to get acclimated to the taste, but I'd rather just have other alcohol. Is cognac an acceptable option? Mmmmmmmmm.... burning....

On a different note, check out the Statesman and Chronicle classifieds (and maybe UT has some board???) at the end of May, and to a lesser degree, August.  Lots of students will be selling stuff (or outright sticking it on the curbs) at that time so you can get good stuff (well, stuff at least) cheap.

Okay, we need tuxes EDIT- you need dress, I need tux. Ask away. By the way, can we have an outdoor wedding? Oh yeah, I forgot, by the pool. I don't know much about weddings, are you asking how many guests we will have or bridesmaids and groomsmen? I am sure we can hash out the details, I have a small family and a pretty decent number of friends. Lets not get too carried away, although the Austin HH crew is of course invited. Maybe they can all have roles. If any of them are good cooks, they can cater. Maybe we can just serve Cel's special sandwiches.
Yeah, attendants are the bridesmaids & groomsmen.  I've always wanted to have a small wedding, so if we can keep it under 50 people total, that would be great.  I was thinking I'd just have Cela as my maid of honor with no other peeps on my side, so will you be okay with just one?  I was wondering if we could forego the whole formal tuxes thing.  I tend to think that large-scale weddings are semi-pretentious and I'd rather focus on celebrating our friendship rather than impressing random relatives, so I think I'll just go with a nice sundress.

So, in reading your weekend eats, we are going to be dangerous with the sweets when we combine forces.
:D This may make up for the whole Star Trek thing. I definitely am going to need a guy who thinks my idea to go get chocolate shakes from Player's at midnight is a good one. Just ask Javert how excited I got when he took me to Cold Stone.

Agreed, b/c there will be two types of drinking situations where beer will be a must.

1) Outdoor Daytime Drinking in the Summer-b/c of the heat, unless you want to get really drunk and sick quick, beer is a must at these occassions. You can drink whiskey, but the consequences can be pretty dire.

2) Beer Joints-there will be a number of establishments in Texas that will just serve beer and cheap wine. Even though wine is offered at these places, it will be of a pretty poor quality, perhaps out of a box. The more critical problem is the regulars will lose all respect for you. This never looks good on your drinking resume.

I have much to learn.

Quote
Oh, geez.  I've got my work cut out for me.  TEXAS FOOTBALL!!!  High school, college, and to a very teeny tiny lesser extent...the Cowboys and Texans.

I can do that. I'm actually not in a very good football market now (Cardinals and Wildcats suck), so it's no wonder I never got into it much. If I'm in an area with competent teams, though, that shouldn't be such a problem. ;).

Apropos of the above two posts: I see your points. I don't think I'll ever *like* beer, but I imagine I'll learn to tolerate it with enough practice. I figure drinking a can when required is enough to be sociable, right?

Re: Recovering alcoholic. I don't think so. I mean, I do like to drink, and the same people will see me again. I don't want people thinking I'm a relapse case if they see me at a bar with a mixed drink.

Allergic: Similar problem, unless it's possible to be allergic to only beer... is it? I must google.

I called Hah-vahd up today, and they decided to waitlist me. They sit on my app until the very end of the cycle, only to tell me I get to wait some more before I get a concrete decision. I wanted closure!  >:(

Does anyone have any thoughts about their taking so long to put me on the waitlist? (I hadn't been held or anything, they just sat and sat and sat on it before deciding this) Is it a good or bad sign?

Well waitlist is better than no list!  I kind of wish I'd applied to Hah-vahd, Yale, and Stanford, just out of curiousity.  This girl I grew up w/ that's an absolute idiot is at Stanford right now, and I'm still trying to figure out how that happened.  I'm kind of like, "if she can get in then surely...."

that girl is still an absolute idiot for going to stanfUrd....as we say in the tradition of the Spirit of California: "HALLELUJAH, STANFURD SUCKS! GO BEARS!"

And it does bother me that people don't know NU is a top 10 school. But this has more to do with the amount of importance I place on people thinking I'm smart and my ego and less on...anything else. It's a self-identity issue with me.

Me, too. I feel like I've worked hard over the years. The least I could get is some recognition from family--but none of them but a CA judge uncle has any clue... sigh...

Well, they'll figure it out when you get a job.

Perhaps.  When I got out of grad school and joining Andersen Consulting (which I was pretty proud of) I don't know how many folks kept saying, "Oh, Arthur Andersen?  I didn't know you wanted to be an accountant."   Then try explaining strategic consulting to your grandparents - you get the old, "Huh.  And people will pay your for that?"   ;)

Eventually, you have to develop and internal locus of approval.   :)

Texas is so bad about not knowing good schools.  To them UT is the number 3 law school in the nation right behind Yale and Harvard and SMU, Baylor and UH aren't too far behind.  This is non-lawyers of course, but it always makes me laugh.

I know that the Texas perspective could be perceived somewhat as ignorance, but I just like to think that they really support their own.  It's kind of cool when you think about it.  There's very few other places quite like Texas.  :)  I've lived in six states...this one's the best (to me anyways).

I actually don't think it's either, really.  How many of us could name the top law schools for certain prior to developing an interest in actually going to law school?  I know I can't for certain name another for certain top 5 med school other than Harvard.  (Ok, I just looked it up, and how many knew WUSTL was a top 3 med school?)  I know that Southwestern and Baylor med are considered top schools, but I don't know how many "top" schools there are, and if they fall within a T14 list for med schools (and don't even get me started on what utter BS the specific law school T"14" concept is).

I bet even most folks who get USNWR don't read the ranking unless they are considering going to school, and then it would be for only their particular area. They get their information from their friends who work or are associated with the field (and see which schools they consider "top 10" and I think you will be surprised) and perhaps an article that refers to a local school as a top school.

Anyhow, didn't intend for that to be a rant, but I think it's easy to get a little bit caught up in things when we are all (understandably) focused on law school.  Sometimes folks forget that most folks just really don't care which are the top schools because it truly has no importance in their lives.  My 2 cents.   :)

Oh, hereís a better one:
ďToday is a good day for a little love poetry. Why don't you sit down and think of the things you like best about the person you've got your eye on. Then make it rhyme!Ē

Crow, Crow, Crow,
My sweet former beau.
I like that heís a lefty
And his avatarís not hefty.
Heís also middle child,
Which makes his temper mild.
Our Ďrents went to UCLA,
ďLike, omigosh, no way!Ē

Cela is a bella,
Who has a nice fella.
She really likes pizza
Which makes her neatsa.
So sad sheís off to Chicago,
Where did all our time go?

Ken is my new little brother.
Whom Iíll try not to mother.
Heís going to do just fine.
If not, he can call anytime.

Limonjello, such a fellow,
Who knows Austin wello.
Iím so glad heís sticking around
Cuz Iíll be able to visit when back in town.

Dude, nothing rhymes with Ormachea.

Only fair to return the favor to the OP

Anastasia's going to go
And leave Austin much the lesser
Hopefully she'll come back one day
As a visiting law professor.
But should her law career she leave
And Crow she fail to marry
We think she'd also be more than happy
To be your Secretary.

Aw darn! I even came up with one for you in my head when I was out smoking and then I forgot to write it out. Darn! I remember that it started with Ellie is Swellie. Give me a sec. Ana exits to smoking porch.
ha ha, no biggie, just giving you a hard time.  I'm doing more work these days so I'm a little quieter.  Imagine, working at work!  The nerve of my boss!  I didn't think any work got done in the Texas Legislature...  Oh wait it doesn't.

Okay, I forgot the original, but here's another.

Ellie

Ellie followed her heart and said no to UT.

I hope that all those coming to Austin and not moving too far away will plan to be at the ACL Festival.

Very nice of them to plan it early in the semester before things get too stressful.

Don't beat me, but I have never been. I bought a ticket to last year's, but I had to sell it and go to my boyf's sister's wedding in Las Vegas instead. I was bummed.

Quite obviously, you suck.   :P  (Vegas isn't a bad 2nd option, I have to say).

It's a blast if you like music or festivals at all (and if you weren't that type of person I doubt you'd find Austin all that fun).  We've been to all three after going to Jazzfest for many years.  Outside of the heat last year and one day of somewhat large crowds, it's always been a blast.  Very laid back and such a variety of music, it's really a great value and time.  Since they are deciding to sell 10,00 less tickets this year, it should be even better.  I think we have about a dozen friends coming down this year for it.

BTW, did you know that the same Austin company that runs ACL is putting on Lollapalooza in Chicago this year?  Great lineup there, but I think it's in July.

Have they posted the food schedule yet?  I daresay the food is as good as the music.  I, Austingirl, have been for the last couple years, but don't think I will make it this year.  I'm a little freaked out about making good grades.  :-[

EDIT: Looks like the food vendors aren't set until July.  We'll see.  Agree that the food is great (though just a tad less than Jazzfest food because there is no Crawfish bread or Crawfish Monica), and I can't imagine them turning away any of the more popular booths.  Actually, we figured that food is one way to tell Fest veterans from rookies.  Veterans learn to eat early and often, trying a variety of foods and not getting caught up in the long lines around dinnertime.   ;D

As for coming back, that's not optional.   ;)  C'mon, you get out early on Friday, remember?  And it's early in the semester.  This is literally the one weekend in the semester I am alotting myself for pure fun, and I'm extremely ancy about grades, too.

That is apparently the concensus around here. Despite the fact that they have 25% more clients, a new associate, and 1/4th as many clerks (all one of us), I am "bad" at my "job." I have offically put in my 2 months' notice. Bleh. I'm in a pouty mood.

That does suck.  As I recall, BigTex wasn't a big fan of working there, either.  Very sorry to hear that.  Anyone who says that type of stuff is a pretty piss-poor manager.

The lineup for ACL is unreal.  I'm so excited about the Black Crows!  I don't know if I'll go though.  I have a hard time making it through those marathon things and I was pretty miserable last year because I couldn't really get anywhere w/out someone sweaty I didn't know touching me.  I heard they knocked down the number of tickets they are selling though which might help.

Yeah, 10,000 fewer should help a lot.  I was concerned that by reducing tickets that the lineup might be much weaker, but that doesn't seem to be the case.  As for the heat, I hear you, but it sounds like Crow has some really good ideas on that front.  Hopefully, it will be more like the first two years weather this year.

Now I am depressed, my brilliant plea for residency officially rejected, 36,000 in extra tuition, officially my burden, don't want to defer for a year, but that is a lot of extra cash and I am not expecting to choose the highest paying law job.

Off to be depressed. No, I can't go be depressed because I am stuck at work.

Have a good one folks.

That sucks, but at least it wasn't unexpected.  Don't forget, there are a number of opportunities for 2nd and 3rd years scholarships that might help reduce that amount.

The thing that kills me is being stuck a non-resident for 3 years. I haven't lived anywhere for 18 months straight since leaving Texas, I travelled, had a travelling job, lived in Los Angeles, lived in Denmark, I don't even know if I would have been given residency at California schools. I have no land to call my own.

Sorry again if it sounded like I was whining. I have actually been very lucky in many ways. Just was bummed when I got the news.

Hey, Crow.... that sucks. I'm so sorry.  :'( But I had to give a wry grin at your statement, because what you will learn in your first semester CivPro class is that state residency for jurisdiction purposes is a combination of where you reside and where you intend to stay for an indefinite period of time... and you don't change residency again until both of those conditions are met somewhere else! So for jurisdiction purposes, you are still a resident of TX. Ironic, no?

It is the fact that at some point I stayed in Cali for over a year that is killing me I think, but there is a next step I have learned, so this drama continues. I got a pretty good deal anyway, can't remember if I told you. Have you heard back about finals? I may have to use that paragraph in my next appeal, good to have bright people on my side.

Ellie, can you get one of them politicians to make me a resident by executive order?

Sorry for long delay in posting all; between packing, helping my parents move, being sick, and finals, my time is seriously in short supply. The worst part is that once I actually move, I'll have more time than I know what to do with. Typical, eh?

Just responding to a couple of things before I have to go again:

How Javert Jacked Crow's Furniture

Outstanding! Well done. ;).

4) I think we should have a mud wrestling fight between Crow and Javert. A Fight for the Furniture, a Duel for the Stools, a Wrangling for the Wall Hangings! The Couch Clash, The Accouterments Argument, The Defeat for the Loveseat!

I love it. Can I bring a pistol? Seems like a Texan thing to me.... ;).

Oh Duh!  Those who need furniture...I totally forgot.  I have a small storage unit full of junk. It's leftover stuff from my grandparents' house.  I can't remember how much of it is furniture and how much is just junk, but my mom and I are supposed to go through it sometime in June and clear it out now that my gp has passed away and I'm moving to Houston.  If I come across any furniture when we're clearing it out that a family member hasn't claimed, I'll call y'all.  I know there aren't any couches, but I might have bed/headboard, end tables, bookshelves, cookbooks, and kitchen utensils.

Time Warner is your only cable option.  You have the standard Dish/DirecTV options if you want satellite.  Costs are fairly close, so I think it really comes down to personal preference.

I have to warn you that in Texas you will find that most satellite folks go with DirecTV because that is the only place you can get the NFL Sunday Ticket.   ;)

Limon-- Really? I'm doing my own research, and Grande Communications seems a fair option, and they *say* they're available in Austin.

Their page is here: http://www.grandecom.com  <-- I'd link directly to their Austin stuff, but their page uses cookies/scripts, so I can't. But this is the package I'm eyeing:

Quote
GP2    $79.95/month
Standard High-Speed 6.0
High-speed Internet
Up to 6.0Mbps download, 384kbps upload, 5 email addresses and 20MB of Personal Web Space.

Plus

Expanded Cable
80 popular channels

UPDATE: I think I found their trick. I called Grande and they said they weren't "under contract" with my apartment complex. I think that implies that *somebody* has a contract with La Med, and I should just call them and figure out who it is. You're probably right, and Time Warner is my only option until I'm in a house or something..... damn. They're pricey.

I think you can find cable internet for ~40 from Time Warner and then split the cable off with a $3 piece from radioshack.

Yeah, the signal is the same, but it's only basic cable.  They charge you $5 extra if you have RoadRunner and not cable through them as they know you can get the signal anyhow.

I know SBC has a big promotion out (or had one) that combined DSL, phone, and Dish for about $100.  A pretty good deal if you like Dish.  However, they are not my favorite company in the world.

Ana, my eye hurts, please help. By the way, when we are married, do I also get to share your insurance. Playing tennis yesterday, I lay on the ground, it great pain, wondering, when I open my eyes, will I still be able to see. In 26 years of playing sports, never had I had any kind of ball hit directly into my eye, so fast, I am quite certain I did not have time to blink. I guess I should just be happy it was a tennisball and not a baseball.

Okay, the point is, my eye hurts. I hear it is quite difficult to read case after case for law school when your eye hurts. I could see when I opened my eye, but not as well as I could before I landed on the court in great pain. So, the real point is Ana, take care of me, I am hoping you can make me another batch of chicken soup and now I need our marraige for residency and insurance, oh yeah, and love of course, and I suppose most importantly to provide a happy or unhappy ending for Cel's play.

Geez, Crow.  Sorry about your eye.  How does one get blasted in the eye playing tennis? Were you standing at the net?  I hate to break it you, kid.  We're getting older.  I've heard a lot of complaining from you lately about sore muscles, pain, etc due to sports activities.  You need to learn your limits or get health insurance or don't whine about it.  How much can I take care of you when you're willingly putting yourself in these situations of heavy drinking, over-exertion, etc?  Tsk, tsk.  I'm supposed to be a partner here, not a mommy. <Sigh>  Ana walks off to get an ice pack and bake some cookies...

Ellie-- Smoking ban: I dunno. On the one hand, I'm really not sure it's a proper use of state power. On the other hand, I rather like the prospect of being able to go out without dealing with the smoke. I guess if it really does start shutting down bars and clubs, I'd support repealing it; in the interim, I suppose I tentatively support keeping it. Anybody else read Pandagon? Marcotte's posts about this give me pause.

I think you can either purchase your own or purchase it through the school, but either way, I think the schools require that you have it for some reason.  This is if my memory serves me correctly.

I just wish they were accounting for it in loans. It doesn't seem like UT allots much money for insurance for health, car, etc. Plus no loan for relocating. My car will probably breakdown on the way, so that will be one less expense, but the health insurance I certainly need. I was hoping the big state school would provide some insurance. I was only in Denmark for a year, but it doesn't take long to get used to universal healthcare.

UT (and other schools I spoke with) take it into account in your overall COA.  I would love to see the specific breakdown of what they give for each amount, but I have had two schools tell me this.  Try providing insurance for 4 people on that budget!  They adamantly will not cover dependent insurance expenses. I will have to do all that with a private loan.  Sucks

On a separate note about the smoking ban, I think the close vote shows this is not a well supported idea.  The large majority of people do not smoke, but it won with a very small majority, which (most likely) shows that a number of people share the concern that this is not an appropriate place for the government to intervene.  I don't really understand why the government should be able to tell a business owner how to run their business in this regard.  For those who don't know, Austin already has a smoking ban in restaurants, this bill just covered specifically bars and pool halls.  Somehow, it's okay to still do it in a Bingo hall, which I bet money they left out because they didn't want the AARP involved in this issue (and no, I'm not joking here).  I don't understand why you would be concerned about workers health in a public bar, but not in a Bingo hall or private club.

I completely agree on the UT COA total.  It's something I really want to take up with them next year.  I've heard their reasoning, and it's got some flaws, but it involves taking on the overall UT Financial office.  I'm not looking for any more grant aid, but just a COA that allows me to reasonably borrow what I really need to get through the next 3 years.  The pure private loan rates (beyond the COA limit) can be brutal.

Debt??!?!  I can't go into debt?!?!  What's the cheapest school that I can go to? How cheaply can I live in order to avoid as much of this as possible!?!?"

Actually, no, I'm becoming more sanguine with time.

I won't bore y'all with my calculus (although it's sweet; bargain Texas prices coupled with financial aid is awesome), but here's the bottom line:  If a family of 4 can live off of $45,000, then you can find a way to still have a nice life and also pay off your debts.  It's that simple. You may have to delay a few things you want (traveling, a jaguar, or whatever), but it's doable. And once it's paid off, you're a free person, and nobody can take that away from you....

Crowdaddy-- Yeah, Texas was generous with the aid. WHat's more, my parents are willing to help me out by lending me what I would otherwise borrow from a private bank; I can get a much better deal from them (and it's mutually beneficial; they can get a much better from me than by putting their money in a bank, and much safer than stocks or bonds or whatever).

It's a two bedroom apartment. I don't intend to share; I'm a total @#!*-up when it comes to living with other people. I'm not sure if there's more apartments available, but there might be. When I get there, I'll talk to the lease agent and see when more becomes available. I think the news might be bad, however; the two bedroom wasn't by choice, but because that's what they had. Of course, my move in date was inelastic, so I didn't have a lot of options.

Of course, if the two bedrooms are 609, the one bedrooms might be cheap enough that you can afford to simply live there on your own. Again, I'll talk to the agent when I get there.

Ana-- Eh, guest bedrooms are overrated. You don't want to encourage those people to visit, do you? ;). And good luck with finding storage...

Ormachea-- Yeah, that sounds about right. I saw those numbers and decided NYU wasn't for me. However, 30% taxes may be a bit low. By the time we're out working, the democrats should be back in power, which will mean a raise on the top tax brackets (i.e, us). On the other hand, you seem to be assuming a mortgage right off the bat, which may be unjustified; if possible, it could be more logical to live cheaply for a few years and pay off the loans quicker, then get your house. Obviously, it'll vary from situation to situation. :).

Since I've never really operated a budget that included retirement planning, I really am curious as to what you guys think. Anything too naive or just plain wrong?
You've underestimated a bit.  You haven't included property taxes (which are probably going to be nearly $1000 per month, but you will get a partial tax credit from.)  I also believe that you will find that utilities + repair + house insurance will be more than $500 a month.  $1000 for a car (if you include gas, maintenance and insurance + payments) is about right if you want a car in the mid $30K region.  If you were looking for something higher, then you need to increase that, too.  Food and restaurant (for New York) is probably a little low unless you are a real homebody or you are working so many hours you can't go out much.

Don't get me wrong, $125K is a LOT of money anywhere and you will be very comfortable, but maybe not quite as much as you think off the bat if you are socking so much money away in savings (which is a very smart approach, obviously).

I already made my comment in the other thread (before I saw it here) regarding money for charitable giving.

Anyway, y'all wrote like 3 pages so I didn't read it all, mostly because it wasn't about me and that's the topic I like best.  ;)

limon, do you listen to Jeff Ward? He had mucho to say re: the bingo palors (parlours? sp?) yesterday. I for one, was against it because I don't think it was a good plan. I would like a blanket ban, not one you can buy your way out of, or start having bingo. I realize that it's infringing on bar owners' rights to run their business how they'd like, but it's also a huge public health issue. And I don't buy the "slippery slope" argument that now they'll be regulating Big Macs because I don't see how you can argue that your own personal fatassedness is a public health issue. Sitting next to you chompin on a burger doesn't affect my health the way sittin next to you smoking a cigarette does.

I don't like being next to someone who is smoking while I am eating either, but it's my choice if I want to go to a restaurant that would allow smoking, correct (and we already have a restaurant ban)?  Why does the government need to decide this for both me and the business owner?  If it's a public health issue, then we should ban it in homes as well because I might go over to someone's house I want to visit and they might be smoking or have someone in their house who smokes?  How is that any different?  How about kids who have to grow up in smoking households (I would actually support this one, because in this case the children do NOT have a choice of where they are going to go)?  Basically, if it's a public health issue, we should outlaw smoking completely, correct?  So the question is, how is this not a slippery slope leading to more control of what you put into your body?

Most slippery slopes start out with a very small incline.   ;)

It's a lot easier to chip away at the local level than it is to battle Big Tobacco in D.C.

I object, your honor. Non responsive.

C'mon Cela, my argument wasn't about smoking.  It's about freedom and rights and personal responsiblity.  I know you have a better answer than that waiting for me.   ;)

Should we ban smoking altogether? My personal feeling would be hell yeah, because it's disgusting and gross. But what people want to do in their own home is up to them. If i want to sleep in an abestos bed, then I should be able to sleep in an asbestos bed. But if I run a hotel of asbestos beds, and everyone else runs a hotel of asbestos beds, then you're now in the area of public health. Am I going to stop going out with friends because of cigarettes? No, though I often have to leave early because of headaches and nausea. Are smokers going to stop going out because there aren't cigarettes? No, though they may have to step outside every now and then. I think the idea of there currently being choice of smoking and nonsmoking bars is a flawed perception of the sociology and psychology of the bar patron population. Bars are smoking because it earns more revenue, and it's what the consumer wants, apparently. Chosing between money and some stranger's health, a company tends to choose money. And it's not limited to smoking or bars. There is a difference between personal responsibility and corporate responsibility. And there's a difference between public health and personal health. You are always going to be battling between the two. Personal freedoms and corporate regulation, or personal regulation and corporate freedoms.

There ya go, Counselor.  I knew it was there.  I will not bore everyone else here and just let this rest until we can talk in person at a soon to be happy hour (not this weekend's one unfortunately if it occurs, as we will be in Fort Worth).

Had I seen the Hot Chicks thread I would have nominated Cela, Ana, and Ellie, but now it would just be pandering. 8)

Yeah, I did, but I swear it's not me.  Maybe you have a secret admirer.  Oooh...  Who could it be? Crow? Ormachea? Kyle? Ken?  Someone else?

Awesome! I've never had one of those!

Funy, but I think nowadays I think people would probably tend to use the term "stalker."  Interesting/sad how times change.

I think we all do...one day.

But do we want to have kids?!?!  Whole different story...costs a ton, makes your life messy, you can still screw them up even if you do a good job.  I amazed by how many people just jump into it.  I mean, they'll get my good genes, but they'll get the bad ones, too.  Par example, 3 of my 4 grandparents were alcoholics..my parents just never drank so I can't really tell if they got the gene, though I have my suspicions.  From what I can tell from me, my bro, and sis...2/3 got the gene.  Russian Roulette..I swear.
I want kids. Even with the "bad genes"--I believe that kids can grow up and become something else in this world, despite bad genes.

I want three little girls. I can't wait for such a day...

Three girls. Aren't we picky. Are you depending on modern science to insure it, or will you just wear really tight shorts for a few years, increasing the likelihood of having girls?

Ana, don't you remember, you and I have super genes, so our kids should be in great shape. And, think positively, if the kid is an alcoholic, they will be great at it.

Madame Alexander dolls.
Example:
http://www.madamealexander.com/products/product_detail.php/pid=7~subid=7/index.html

No, we are def NOT filling Marin's room with dolls. She's getting microscopes and cool stuff like that. I figure I will be able to part with most of the CPK's, however, mom would have a coronary if I ditched the Madame Alexander ones and I'm mildly partial to them as well. They're only 8 inches tall, so we can probably fit them into two doll cabinets that we can just throw into Marin's room.

My Granny desperately wanted me to want Madame Alexander dolls, but it was a no go.  I was more into acting as hairdresser for what few dolls they did trust me with after which I would try to convince my Mom the hair was gonna grow back.  "See Mom, it's longer than it was yesterday!!"

That's the covery story. I suspect Ana just gets a bit too.... enthusiastic... after a few pretend beers on pretend dates. ;).

Quote
Ana: Other summer movies on my list...Star Wars, Narnia, Batman, Palindromes, and Harry Potter.

I'm totally looking forward to "Serenity" and "Batman" myself.

The Serenity thing is a huge tease, however. Ostensibly, the movie comes out on September 30th.
Good news: There's a pre-screening in Austin May 26th.
Bad news: It sold out online in about 45 minutes, before I even found out about it.
Worse News: The price for two of those tickets on ebay is over $100, with *five* days left in the auctions: http://search.ebay.com/serenity-austin_W0QQfromZR40QQsojsZ1

[Check out all these showings, and all of them sold out in less than an hour: http://www.cantstopthesignal.com/  <-- And that's AFTER they sold out ten showings on May 9th, some of them in the same cities. Seriously, how screwed up is that?]

The only way I'm going to get to see the movie early is to go to it on a pretend date with somebody. Sadly, I suspect everybody else in this thread is thinking the same thing: "What the hell is Serenity?"

If this Star Wars doesn't suck, I may go see it (I've never even bothered with the first two prequels). However, despite being a connoisseur of scifi, I think all the Star Wars films are, at best, mediocre. A friend of mine once called them, "Exceptionally well done popcorn films", and I pretty much agree.

I want a wife at some point, but no kids. Nine out of ten biologists agree that it's best if my genes die with me.

Anyway, I just took my last final. Today is pretty much free, except for some minor errands. I should roll into Austin Monday or Tuesday. In other words, just late enough to miss yet another happy hour. ;).

No, the veggie was bad, but I was infinitely more traumatized by our second waiter.

A conversation you never want to have at a restaurant:
Waiter: So, where are you going to school?
(assorted people): NYU! Northwest! Texas!
Waiter: Hey, I went to Texas!
Me: ...

Fortunately, upon cross-examination, I found out it was for drama, but still. That's just not a conversation I needed to have. ;).

[Don't get me wrong, I've worked in restaurants myself, it's just not a place I want to go back to.

Also, if you enjoy Chinese food, don't work at a Chinese restaurant where you'll see how the food is made.

Trust me on this one.]

Anyway, celark, that sounds good. I have two items of tech I'd also be willing to trade, a series 1 TiVo and an external firewire DVD Burner (works with either + or -. I don't think it works with DVD-RAM, but, then, why would you want it to?). If neither of those appeal to you, then I'll just use cash; I don't think I have anything barter-worthy.

Yeah, I'd definitely need help moving it, especially since I'm on the second floor. It's safer and will get me more exercise, but it's also a pain in the ass in some ways.

Post those pictures and I'll make an offer. :-D.

Slight shift in topic:

I'm really f'ing bored, and have no idea what to do about it.

I'm done with finals, so I can't even pass time by pretending to study. I can't leave town prior to graduation, so that puts me at Saturday. Everything but my laptop is packed (again, had no choice on that one). Most of my university friends graduated last semester, and the rest are still in finals.

Seriously, how the hell am I going to pass two days? I'd normally go out to a bar and enjoy the sweet embrace of alcohol, but I don't think I'm at a point in my life where I can go out drinking on a Thursday morning.

I have some light reading-- Nickled and Dimed, Perfectly Legal, and some other sociological/political books I've been meaning to read-- but I don't feel like reading about the economy at the moment.

Arg. Any advice? I could see a movie, but I don't think anything is out...

Ormachea-- Hrm, that's interesting. I still have a DVD player (well, a playstation, technically, but it works in a pinch) and a TV. I have a general rule that I don't watch TV or movies unless I'm exercising, but I can make an exception for this case...

Re: Series. Blockbuster actually kind of sucks at having scifi series, at least from where I'm at. Plus, I'm a bit *too* fanatical. I've seen it all, or it's not out on DVD yet. The only thing I haven't seen is the really obscure, awful stuff, like BSG:1980. Although, hrm, I suppose I could re-rent "Firefly". Haven't seen that in a while....

I may do that later. Thanks!

Dude, chill out.  I don't think anyone puts Star Wars into the major sci-fi category or mistakes it for Shakespeare. It's a fun cheesy simplistic film about the battle between good and evil and everyone in it is either all good or all bad, period.  It's also a shameless montage of special effects which happen to usually be awesome.  I for one plan to go within the first few days that it comes out and boo, cheer, and applaud loudly in key scenes.  The NYT ran a super snooty article earlier this week on how Star Wars is not 'real' sci-fi and I wanted to gag.  Some people just don't get it I guess.

Yeah, again, I believe we agree: They're exceptionally well done popcorn films, with a clearly delineated line between good and evil, special effects, etc., etc. What you said is just a different way of phrasing that.

I don't actually care much about the distinction between 'real' sci-fi and fantasy (although, interestingly, I have a friend who teaches a class on that at a public university. Your tax dollars at work.). If the final installment is as good as the first three were, then I'll go and probably enjoy it. However, if it's as bad as the fourth and fifth ones were said to be, then I probably won't bother. I have friends who will go see the movie no matter what, so I can just check in with them....

Simple Translation:  You are not allowed to rip on Star Wars on this thread or Ana will hunt you down.  >:(

As for what to do in the coming days. Personally, I say drink and watch movies at the same time. However, you could also go hiking/biking in any of the nearby cool parks. At this point, I would try and do anything you haven't yet done in Tucson. ...Or you could just drive to Vegas. 8)

Hrm, hiking and biking sounds good. ;). I could hike, but don't have a bike at the moment.

Vegas: I don't think I have enough time, and I was just there for my 21st birthday.   Good in theory though.

PS: I'm the youngest of three. It may or may not show.

I'd normally go out to a bar and enjoy the sweet embrace of alcohol, but I don't think I'm at a point in my life where I can go out drinking on a Thursday morning.

That kind of half-assed attitude isn't going to cut it here in Texas, Javert.   >:(

Kyle-- Duke's deposit deadline just passed, and they just mass emailed a bunch of people saying, "We haven't received your deposit, so you're out" (I got one, despite the fact that I had previously emailed and said I wouldn't be attending). Crow: In response to your earlier PM or "why Ana is a little bummed out today"...

Yeah, I understand that this group is pretty new, was created with the understanding of being temporary, and that it is a weird time for all of us.  I think what is bothering me overall is that we let people walk in and walk out of our lives without much thought to the whole thing.  Weíve become such a transient society that we take friendships/interactions with others for granted.  It used to be that people lived less than a mile from their families, stayed in one place, and everyone watched each other grow up and took part in the process.  Today most of us live far from our families, move several times in our lives, and the result is a dwindling sense of community.  We are surrounded by a large group of acquaintances and very few of us ever take the time to create true friendships anymore.  I think this makes us less sensitive to the world around us and more self-oriented.  The long-term presence of others in our lives broadens our viewpoints, enhances our tolerances, and makes us more considerate people.  What also makes me sad is that there comes a point when we realize that the most cherished parts of lives were our small moments of intimacy with people and we stop and wonder why we put so much effort into career, status, etc, but made little effort to get to know others/stay in touch with those that we did.  Iíve seen it happen with older people and itís a mistake I donít want to make.  When it comes down to it, people are the most important thing out there. However, Iím in a different boat than most people in that I got struck in the face with that fact around the age of 19.  So I just have to sit here and smile as I watch others come and go. Phooey.

WOW - Great observations from someone your age...or any age for that matter!!!

So Tex, what did you decide on for school?

Looks like Texas Tech...I'm still on Houston's waitlist, but I've never been very found of the city. I know both schools are good, but I feel like lubbock is probably a better "community" fit for me than Houston. (I grew up in SA and live in Fort Worth, so I prefer the laid-back style to the big-city feel).

I hope that you are pleasantly suprised by some of the enduring relationships that you will no doubt enter into while in Houston!

The Daily Show is a comedy show about current events, it's not a debate of issues, it's not going to break stories.

Cela, I too am contemplating continuing to grow hair out til I can put it in a pony tail...but I just can't become a ponytail guy. My advice would be to keep your hair the way you want it to start, and if it becomes too much of a hassle, just grow and go with the ponytail...My other advice would be to never take my advice.

So is anyone going to watch the moving train wreck of the Britney/Kevin show this eve?  For some reason, I'm dying to see it, but I don't have cable so I'm looking for someone to fill me in on how truly awful it is.

Are they going to kill him live on the air?  I'd probably spare 30 minutes or so to watch that.  Well, as long as it's not opposite CSI, in which case I'd have to DVR it.

On a completely separate subject, can anyone tell me what the hell Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback girl" is about?  I know I'm old, but I'm usually not quite this out of it.

Oh, and I think the Daily Show, while slightly left leaning, skewers stupidity on both sides pretty equally. It's also one of the funniest things on TV on a regular basis, and "America: The Book" is about the funniest book I have read in 10 years.

Ok, yeah, there's not much to do in Nova Scotia except watch Canadian music television.  Oh, and they get up way to freaking early here.

Yep.  Nova Scotia.  Canada, that is.  Codfish... Atlantic sea...

Did you know the Titanic victims are buried here?  Actually, it's a nice little city, but when the weather sucks and you are stuck in a hotel room, it doesn't matter.  Also, I have to get up at 2:30 AM central time to catch my flight tomorrow/tonight.  Joy.

When people talk of business travel, folks often picture London, New York, Paris, etc. (which does happen sometimes, I'll admit).  However, they fail to also picture Halifax, Fargo, Salina (Kansas), Little Rock, etc. and getting up at godawful hours to catch flights.  It's honestly one of the big reasons for me to look at a career change to law from what I am doing.

Anyhow, I know, tiny violins...   ;)

Thanks for the Hollaback info.  Pharrell was involved, and I like most things he is attached to, so that explains why it got my attention.  I don't feel quite so out of it now.    ;D

Congrats on your thesis and MA, Crow.

Not to be Debbie Downer, but lawyers do it too.  Be careful about the firm you pick.  My poor Dad spent 4 months except for weekends in some town in Tennessee an hour and a half from the closest airport.  He also had to go to Norway and Malaysia.  Right now he's going fun places though.  He spent last week in LA, this week he's in Hilton Head and next week's Miami!

I need to start eating better too.  Maybe we can support each other Ana!

I slept through workout this morning and I didn't run yesterday.  I'm feelin the blah Cela, I know what you mean.

Let's all runaway to the Caribbean before Law School starts!

No, it's a very fair warning, and one I have researched pretty well.  I should have been more particular in my bitching.   ;)  It's not so much the travel itself, but when it gets to be a lot.  I used to travel 100%, and now it's about 50%.  It was cool when I was 24 and single, but not so much now that I have kids who are growing up.

Most lawyers I spoke to indicate travel is usually about 25% for depositions, etc., but can go up in case of a trial out of city/state (I've been pretty specific about my questioning on this lately).  Given that I want to go litigation, it's a concern, but it seems manageable.  I actually DO like to travel occasionally, and being in the office every day would kill me, but I agree it is something I will be very cautious of in my search.

So, does this mean I'm officially no longer the new guy?

Welcome, and congratulations to everyone in need of a congratulations.

Nope, you are now a veteran- I guess I'm nte new guy, so I should let the hazing begin.

Excerpt from Bill Simmons column on ESPN.COM in regards to the Britney Spears TV show:

ē I missed it last night, but Britney's new TV show was apparently a train wreck of gargantuan proportions. In a good way. By all accounts, not only will the show end what was left of her career, but the odds of a Federline-Spears sex tape leaking onto the Internet have just been taken off the books in Vegas.

for y'all old people in the house. One last sound from lunch.

Walked into a store to the sounds of

'We don't have to take our clothes off, to have a good time, no no' something about dancing all night, blah blah blah.

I can't believe A. this song still gets played, B. a song so untrue was ever released.

Mmmm.  I think I should go by some cherry wine.  (Boone's Farm has to make a cherry wine, right?)

Are you in consulting?  One of those jobs where you're only in town on the weekends for the most part?  I have friends that are doing those and, while you get to see a lot of cool (and not so cool places) I think they're already getting tired and ready to stop packing all the time.

Forgot to answer this earlier.  Yes, I am in consulting, and used to do the only in town on the weekends thing for quite a while.  I have been able to stay in town more the past couple of years, but at the expense of career progress.  Not the ideal tradeoff I want to hang around for.  Or, to quote Gwen, "A few times I've been around that track, So it's not just gonna happen like that."

Can you believe Boone's Farm doesn't have a website...I just spent about 20 minutes doing different google searches?

Did a similar type of travel consulting gig for 4 years. I agree it is brutal, and I would not recommend it. I took an a non-charge assignment the last six months to do the law school application stuff, and it has helped my quality of life 100%. Did not advance my career, but since I was leaving...

Hey all,

My apologies; I keep jumping in this thread only when I need information. It's not by design, honest.

Anyway, I, um, need some information. I need a state issued ID relatively quickly. In my home state, Arizona, it's easy: You go in, provide your documentation, and you have an ID within five minutes or so. Is it like that in Texas, or do they mail the ID to you at a later date?

Thanks!

Alternately, I think you have to go to the DPS for any IDs.  I vaguely recall that they might be instantaneous now, but I can't say for certain.  I would just call them up.

Thanks for the ID related answers all. I went in and got a 'temporary receipt'. That, combined with the documentation I used to get the ID (student IDs, social security card, birth certificate, etc.) and my willingness to have my bags searched my scary TSA, should allow me to fly.

I'm headed back to Tucson for a short bit, and I'm not entirely sure when I'll be back. Long story. In any case, it may be best to count me out of the Thursday festivities...

The home thing is huge for me as well.

I absolutely abhor debt, to the point where I have to stop myself from paying off zero interest loans early (I have issues). The prospect of being able to own a nice home, a car, and have no student loan debt by the time I'm 30 is rather appealing. Score another one for Texas.

[Though, after my first week in Austin, I now know that my house better have air conditioning. Really good air conditioning.]

Alright, I know we've already scared off the ladies with our basketball talk, so I'll try to limit myself to this last post in regards to b-ball (at least for now)

the pistons are playing the no respect card, but to some extent it is legit, no different than the patriots using it, especially before their 2nd super bowl, plus its just self motivation, but granted it can be annoying.

imho, i think the pistons win the 89 finals, even if the lakers are completely healthy and they bring lew alcindor back to play the role of kareem abdul jabbar (who I think is one of the most underrated a-holes in the history of sports, he gets virtually no credit for this...jeff ament of pearl jam even wrote a whole song about how his childhood hero, turned out to be a complete ass to him when he met him as an adult at a rock n jock bball jam)

speaking of overrated and a-holes...i agree with everything you said about karl malone, and clearly remember all that magic and olympic stuff, and remember thinking the same exact thing...and i'll never get over that he won two mvp's over michael jordan, although clearly jordan got the last 2 laughs.

ok, no more bball talk from me :X

Off subject, not that I have any idea what subject we were on:

but I had a dream last night that I made a last minute decision to go to Baylor. I never applied to Baylor, or really considered it. But in my dream thats where I decided to go instead of the school I'm currently committed to. In my dream I felt anxious/nervous/and excited.

Anyone want to play Dr. Phil and tell me their interpretation of this dream (feel free to use dr. phil type colloquialism....like you can shave a goat, but that won't make him jump in the pool)

side note: I HATE DR. PHIL

side note 2: I was just on the waitlist board, and I keep thinking it's weird how many people are on all sorts of waitlists. I didn't get waitlisted by anyone, even schools I thought I had a pretty reasonable shot at. Straight up rejections or admissions, just curious about this for some reason.

The only Dr. Phil I know is Phil Jackson, but I won't bring the subject back to B-Ball again. I got two waitlists out of 11 apps.

You probably dreampt(how is that spelled, is it even a word) about Baylor because you heard Ellie talking about Tempura Fries, or because you want to join the marines, or because it is the only school in the country with a sailor bear.

For people that care about the schools, waitlists suck and just leave people hanging.

The adcomms determined that, even if they didn;t want you, you were such a high caliber person, they didn't want to leave you hanging, so you were spared the waitlist bug.

I'm not gonna bother debatting the greatness of Phil Jackson, but I will say while a very good coach, his true greatness lies in his ceising on opportunity.

I have heard Baylor is the marine corp of law schools

and your response to why I was not waitlisted more, was the most positive spin on the issue i could imagine, even if it makes me delusional...thanks!

actually i think i just don't want to leave texas yet

Did you apply to UH?  You could have gone there with me!

I probably should of, but I've never been to Houston, wasn't sure if I wanted to live there, didn't really know much about the school....then it got to be too late.

If I can't get the private loans I need for this semester, I may have to defer to next year anyway.
Title: Re: Austin LSD HH Thread

If I had a job I could even come close to standing, I would consider deferring til next year and maybe try re-taking the LSAT, although not sure how much better  I could do, the only thing I could try to really improve was how fast I can read, not sure if thats a very improvable skill.

And unless I really crushed the LSAT, I don't think I'd get into a whole lot better options...I do spend too much time on here and it causes me worry.

I don't think I even have enough posts to really need to delete anything.  Maybe I can change that after a while... :)

As for calling UT, I haven't done so lately.  I actually didn't get my WL offer until about 2 weeks ago, so calling at this point probably would be a bit too soon--then again, what do I know? Maybe I should just send in a letter anyway...

I was just wondering about the UT WL because I heard that UCLA overadmitted, and was starting to send out deferrals to the people it had accepted.  Sounds pretty defeating, and I'd hate for that to be the case w/ UT!

Besides, Austin's pretty connected, and I didn't know if anybody knew the lowdown on the situation otherwise.  :)

Britney would be on my list too

I like youre taste Ana

i like good scotch very much, but on the rocks

i also really have been appreciating dirty martinis lately

and i obviously like beer (i guess not that y'all would know that)
used to drink canadian beer like labatt blue, but now switched to mostly mexican imports, pacifico, tecate, dos equis

im not a fan of celis, but i do find it interesting that it started as an austin beer, then was bought by a brewery in williamston, mi, just minutes from where i used to live, and was a big hit throughout lansing and east lansing, then i moved here and it is popular down here too, but im not sure  of anywhere else it is known.

Beer:  Alcohol flavored.  However, if I get to choose, Bass or Shiner Bock.  Bud Light if quantity is of issue.
Mixed Drink: Vodka tonic
Wine: Cabernet or Zin.  La Crema has a nice Chardonnay, though.
Shot: Whatever is bought for me, because I haven't purchased one in ages.

The Vodka tonic reminds me that I need a "winter" drink.  A friend's British father asked if we wanted drinks one Christmas a few years back and he gave me a funny look when I ordered the vodka tonic.  "Really?," he said, "Even at this time of year?"

I forgot that tonic was traditionally a warm weather drink/mixer (coming from when it was actually a tonic used for malaria treatment in those areas).  Apparently, it is still considered strictly such by much of the older generation.

Hmmm..of course, my friend will probably go check to see if he accepted.  Oops.

did i get erased?

also, rockin t pizza is hand-tossed thickness, on the thin side. is good, needs more sauce, but is good.

Why don't pizza places realize, more sauce is always good. Plus, it is not like it is too expensive. Come on, I always have to ask for extra.

NOOOOOO. pizza sauce=BAD. less sauce the better!!! just keep asking for extra...cuz you really can't take sauce off, you can put it on! :-D

i also like HEB commercials with that guy who is in all sorts of commercials like capital one and volkswagen...ya know what i'm talkin about?

and i really like this commercial from fedex (i think), where the guy calls his co-worker out, telling him he is always wrong about everything.

its not the leaning tower of pizza

its fringe benefits, not french benefits

etc...(i forget the rest right now)

but in general i hate commercials, and have a general rule of thumb that if i see 2 commercials for the same product within a 5 minute span, i automatically boycott said product.

hey crow, what's that mexican fast food place in socal that is like taco bell, but isn't?

i had a burrito there once in a drive between san diego and la, just thought of it, cuz it along with carl's jr were the too things that were completely different about cali...that and the fierce competition the coffee bean and tea leaf had goin rivaling starbucks

i know i could look up on internet, but just thought this fascinating question would spark further conversation.

cela- yeah that fart commercial is good, i think a key to clever commercials is to not flood the market with your clever commercial...cuz no commercial is clever after the 100th + time you've seen it....WAaaaSUuuuPppp!

I swear to god, i just read in an interview "What has been your most hurdling challenge so far in life?" Is that even freaking ENGLISH? My GOD people! And the person answers it by saying that in 1995, they had a disease for three years. Wow, the ability to manipulate time and space, that must be quite hurdling indeed.

...sigh.

I just had a long funny analogy typed out (actually 2 possible analogies), then realized that they not only weren't funny, but they sucked, and i would have to eventually go back and delete, to save myself the embarrasment of my comment living on in cyberspace perpetuity.

Didn't make it for pizza last night.  Was so hungry when I got home that I dove into a leftover burrito and a large chocolate cake that I had purchased over the weekend.  Felt so sheepish and stuffed that I wouldn't dare make it worse by stepping into a pizza parlor.  Today I will be better! ...And I'm throwing that chocolate cake out!

GREATEST BIRTHDAY EVER, YEAH, YEAH

Ana arrived in her Tiara, looking the part of an International Birthday Princess. Crow was looking sharp, even put on shoes without holes for a change.

They strolled into In N Out, everybody checking out the fly couple. They could tell it was Ana's day, and on a day like this, she preferred to be called Anastasia.

The line was long, but it parted like a sea for Moses, as they moved to the side so Anastasia could place her order. She started to order a shake. Crow reminded her they would be going for ice cream after lunch, but she shot him the look of death and he backed off.

They both ordered burgers, but Crow went all 'Animal Style' on it, minus special sauce. They sat, people stared, a few asked Ana for autographs, and what country she was a princess from. Kids said, 'I want to be just like you when I grow up'. She laughed at them and said, 'good luck', but you really have no hope of being this important and special, just try not to suck and ruin this country for me'.

Food came, they actually delivered it with a smile, which is against company policy, but it was a red carpet day. Ana took one look at the animal style toasted bun with mustard and grilled onions and said, 'Crow, give me the burger'. 'Really, I tried to tell you to order one to, now I gotta eat your boring regular burger'. Ana lauged, knowing it was her day and she would get what she wanted.

Crow told Ana to close her eyes, when she opened them, Cel, El, Brooks, Javert, Jello, trinity, Ormachea, shoot, even UMHBMom and Kyle were there, dressed in full mariachi garb. It is not that any of them were prepared to play that type of music, but come on, those outfits are so much cooler than other bands.

We were all surprised to find out that Brooks plays a mean fiddle and led a brilliant rendition of happy b-day to you, playing it with his teeth.

Crow made sure everybody had a strawberry shake (mixed with large quantities of alcohol) so that they would stop complaining about having to dress as mariachi's. Crow's friend that plays trumpet in a mariachi band led this band of warriors in one actual mariachi song.

Ana cried and blushed and proclaimed, 'this is my best birthday ever, yeah, yeah'. Right as she said it, the staff from Diddy Riese walked in with Ice Cream sandwiches for everyone. Ana saw that Crow's with Espresso chip was much better than her's with Vanilla, she gave Crow a look and he realized they were swapping sandwiches and he was stuck with boring Vanilla.

There was a dude outside the window, maybe a BF or Ex BF, but he was never let in. He went to hide in a corner and sunk into a deep depression knowing he could never top such a party.

Everyone danced and lived happily ever after.

The band played on.

mariachi reminds me of this time we were having dinner at an east austin establishment...there was a mariachi band, a mexican american friend told us to request el rancho grande.

so we requested el rancho grande (sounding like a bunch of gringos)...the leader of the mariachi band looks at us inquisitively. after a few more times of us trying to say el rancho grande and ask if they know the song. the guy finally says in perfect english..."you mean the big ranch?" ...us: "um yeah?"

sidenote: Ana, sorry missed birthday festivities...hope you had a great time!

PWN3D?

I wouldn't dare ask on xoxo for fear of being called a TTT.

PWN3D is cool internet jargon for OWNED, WITH  P replacing the O for some reason, and a 3 replacing the E (cuz its like a backwards E). So if you get your ass kicked in something, or duped, or whatever, its like saying I OWN YOU!

Aim West, Heave.

That's the name of my new band.

My band's name is gonna be "Stupid New Pope"

It came about after a few weeks of hearing nothing but stuff about the new pope. I have no opinion of the pope, but got sick of the pope on the airwaves, especially since I dont have cable and all the networks did was cover the pope. But then I liked the sound of saying stupid new pope.

anyway...

Cela, you gettin excited for Chicago? I saw your post about wanting to get out of the Austin heat. Chicago is probably gonna be pretty hot thru most of Sept. But not as hot as Austin. It will be cold though...I'm getting cold just thinkin about movin back north...Burrrrr (see how cold I am)

but actually, I'm kinda thinkin more about the possibility of endin up in Chicago for a while, kinda wish I would of considered the area more for school.

Women, ladies, gals, not sure what the appropriate Southern Term is.  FASHION ISSUE

This is like the old days three posts by myself at the end of the day.

Okay womens - I need new clothes. My clothes are old, worn down, outdated, sometimes even ugly. Last I heard, women love to shop. I have been meaning to shop for weeks, but I can't because I have no more room in my car to bring stuff, so I decided to wait to buy clothes in Tejas.

I don't know any reasonably priced, relative cool stores to buy clothes. Who is going to volunteer to help me go shopping so that I can become a respectable law school student to be, with a repertoire that consists of more than my two pairs of corduroy pants.

All help is appreciated. Lunch can be factored into the deal. Mind you, I am not asking for the usual handouts, I am planning to buy the clothes, just need either company, or at least direction to the stores, company would be better so I can get comments like 'that is terrible', 'I wouldn't be caught dead with you in public with that on', etc.

Thank you,
Crow

Oh me too me too!  I want to help.  I actually went through this phase for a summer where I thought I was going to be some sort of fashionista person.  I interned for a personal shopper and at a local fashion mag (PaperCity, anyone heard of it?) in Houston.  It was fun while it lasted, but then I realized I'd shoot myself if I had to deal w/ models and rich people for the rest of my life.

Ooooh, you're going to Turkey??  I'm sad I missed the volleyball, but I was being a good daughter and celebrating the Dad's Day w/ Pop.  So, my schedule is a little overwhelmed w/ moving errands plus I'm in a wedding in Dallas Saturday so I have to head out of town Wed to participate in all the festivities (luncheon, bachelorette party, etc).  When did weddings become 4 day ordeals?  Looks like I could only do a happy hour maybe this afternoon or tomorrow or next Monday or Tuesday.  I know that's rough for everyone w/ work, but I'd like to see everyone before I move and maybe even meet the legendary Crow in person.

I'm supposed to meet up with Crow on Tuesday to watch game 4 of the finals if anybuggy wants to go.  We haven't decided yet on a meeting place.

Ellie - I'm prolly not going to Turkey, but I want to have my passport ready just in case.  The BF/ex-bf/whatever we're calling him got a call late Friday night that his Dad needed bypass surgery and he headed out on Sunday morning.  He's not sure how long he'll be there as he'll be taking his dad for second opinions, trying to find a good hospital, maybe moving his parents to a different place as where they live now is w/o an elevator.  I wanted to get my passport stuff in order in case he is going to be there long term, wants me to come out there, etc.  Worried for him and miss him already.  :'(

i'm assuming you mean game 6...where are you going to be watching it?

I'm up for watching the game.  I probably wouldn't stay the whole time just catch the middle or last half or so.

Sorry to hear about your bf character's problems.  That's a hard situation when your close, but I can't imagine being so far away!  I'm sure he appreciates having your support.

Wait a second, why are we going to Turkey honey?  :-* :-*

Cella Bella, make it an early dinner, doesn't even have to be that early, come for the second half of the game.

Yeah, Ellie and Trinity, hooray, hooray, hooray, I am getting to meet more of the fearless group tomorrow.

I can't define the mixed emotions of watching an old friend, an old hero, a good ole happy go lucky Robert Horry save the friggin evil spurs lives like he used to do so many times for my beloved Lakers. Ellie, as a Rocket fan, you probably can relate on this. Horry, darn it, it all started falling apart for the mighty Lakers. Brooks, if you're out there, come out tomorrow and know that I you won't be the only one crying while the Spurs win the championship.

I had a super busy day with dad. He flew in around 10:30 last night, we got into a place just in time to watch overtime.

Ellie, today I was the good son, took him to dinner and then some music and a little cognac at the courtyard or whatever it is called, on 4th street for some blues.

I will be dropping pops at the airports around 4pm tomorrow, so I can meet anytime after that, whoever knows the good place to watch a game, let me know.

I

let me know...i wanna watch. but i might not be able to make it until later on in the game. :-D

I suggest Fox and Hound.

I'm too in mourning from my beloved Pistons being done in by that son of a b*tch horry...it would of been tolerable, if just one person would point out that he only hits big shots because everyone on the other team is concentrating on guarding the other 4 players on the team, always leaving him open, cuz he should be, and usually is the worst player on the floor. but somehow he hits the most improbable 3's in the history of the league, and it has nothing to do with talent...and why the hell do you trap ginobli in the corner with 9 seconds and up by two....ARGH...but i digress (needed to get that off my chest)

yeah i'm bitter, but i guess im more bitter about still having to come into work everyday. 17 more work days. 17 has never seemed like such a large amount before in my life.

anyway, i will try to be nicer and cheerier now that i have vented on the internet about the stupid nba finals, and work.

Welcome to Texas Crow.

I can't believe how big college baseball is down here...I don't think I even knew colleges had baseball teams before this month...course maybe thats because noone from the north ever goes to the college world series.

Go all Texas teams (except obviously the spurs)!

Heya,

For those who weren't there last night (or who left early), we made follow up plans to catch game seven in a similar fashion. Are we going to the same place? I'm perfectly happy with doing it again, but if we want to try a different place for variety, I'm happy with that too.....

PS: Trinity, you owe me $5. ;).

Hey guys,
If we go again on Thursday, I say we go somewhere less crowded...like Crown and Anchor!  Ha-ha.  I'm sure they'll be showing it on the tv there.

eh. C&A for a game doesn't sound very good....TVs are so small...

oh, and ellie...HOOK'EM!
Title: Re: Austin LSDers Delete UR Posts!
Post by: Javert on June 23, 2005, 07:08:31 AM
I vote for crown and anchor too. We watched game 6 on regular sized TVs at the other place, and that wasn't a problem (there were bigger TVs, but we couldn't get access to them). What's more, for game seven, that downtown place is going to be even busier. We barely managed to get bar stools and w ewere there an hour earl last time. I doubt crown and anchor will be that busy, since they're not downtown and don't have any big screen TVs. Ergo, Crown and Anchor sounds like a smarter choice.

I strongly vote for C&A too. :).

Post by: jbrooks1 on June 23, 2005, 10:49:13 AM
Ringers is a real good place to watch games, but probably crowded and a bit expensive, I've never been to crown and anchor or the copper tank, copper tank sounds cool if its not crowded and has big tv's....of course i'm guessing it is way up north.

anyway, i dont care that much b/w any place

also, crow, yes starbuck's has pay internet thru t-mobile. i'm at mozarts for the afternoon, where the wifi is free. you can also get free internet at alot of places, austin java is a good place with wifi too. but come on over to mozart's if ya feel like gettin online at the lake, i'll be here for a while.

Okay... this is getting out of hand.

I propose we go with celak's compromise suggestion of Copper Tank. It sounds like a good mix of low crowds and huge TVs, which is for the good. Does anybody have massive objections to that?

And, besides that, who's coming?

I'm in for sure. Who else?
Title: Re: Austin LSDers Delete UR Posts!
Post by: Javert on June 23, 2005, 01:49:20 PM
In the absence of Ana to make a final decision, I'm tempted to call it for Copper Tank now. I plan to be there at 8 or so to try and get decent seats.... anybody else coming that early?

Yeah, I was the first one there and found a cheerful little "Liquidation Sale!" sign on the door, dated to about a week ago. It was no big deal, however; I went about 200 feet and found Shakespeare's Pub, which was pretty empty and had a huge plojection TV.

It also had $4 Alabama Slammers. I may have overdone it a *bit*, but I wasn't driving, so no big deal....  ;). I also didn't wake up with a hangover, so it couldn't have been *too* bad.....

[Thanks again Ana for the ride home!]

And hello, limon, long time no post!

Thanks.

Life has been turned rather upside down lately, unfortunately.  I'll skip the Debbie Downer story and just say that I and my immediate family are fine and I will definitely be attending law school (though I barely got my LOI in before the deadline and had to hand deliver it.  Brilliance. :P)

I probably won't be making any happy hours, but hopefully I'll still be able to pop on here occasionally if folks stay active.

hey y'all. i made it ups to iowa city safely and stuff. my friend josh and i packed up Jamal Junior--aka. JJ (the name of boxcar) to the brim. like...if i opened the door stuff just flies out. :-) some highlights:

1) we counted 91 pieces of roadkill
2) wichita traffic sucks
3) Iowa has nicer summer weather than austin
4) in kansas, there was another car full of longhorns, and all of them (including their kids) gave me a hook'em sign. woo hoo!

My apartment is really cool...very excited about it. I'm headed up to Chi-town to go to Ikea and a white sox vs. oakland a's game. GO A'S GO! I hope my car doesn't get all jacked up in the south side chicago though. it'll be my first foray into the second city/windy city.

I love my landlords. they are domestic partners, they live in the building next door. this apartment complex seems to be straight out of queer eye. hahaha. they are cute...there's a picture of them in an architecture magazine (they were profiling their apartment, right above starbucks in the next building). :-) I'll send out pics if anyone wants them (email me or PM me) once i get furniture at ikea this weekend.

ok--on another note...i'm doing it! i'm quitting the cigarette habit. i'm on day 3. :-) and i'm doing the patch thing (i refuse to do the gum thing...i tried that last time...the nicotine gum tastes like crap). One of the potential side effects of the patch is that you may have "vivid dreams." Two nights on the patch, and each night i've had some weird dreams:

Night one: i had a non-sexual dream involving a pornstar; as well as a dream involving me in North Korea with Kim Jong-il.

Night two: cela's boyfriend was in my dream...that was disturbing.

Ok. that's all...later on guys.

Also, have fun in Chicago. We'll be there in two weeks!
Also, I want to see your neighbors and their apt!
And my last also, congrats on the cigarettes. I'm very proud of you!

hahaha...in my dream your boyfriend was gay and i walk in on him having...relations.

Ok, back to being the last tax-payer in this bunch.

Nope, not quite.   ;)

But I did get to turn in my official 6 weeks notice today.   ;D

Ah, what a day.

1 hour at DPS trying to get a drivers license.

3 hours at the social security office trying to convince them my first name is not Avon.

Wow, your life is pretty hard.  I'm surprised some guy's not on TV asking people to send money to you and in exchange they get a photo, bio, and little notes recording your progress.   ::)

Ana, we can schedule a storage time. I am not as much in need because I am getting such a dormy type of apartment with desk and bookshelves built in, but dresser would still be helpful. I need to coordinate with you, and then ask one of my two friends with trucks if I can borrow one of them.

I just really want to get the stuff out of there ASAP so that my mom doesn't have to deal with it.  If you (or any nice guys on this board for that matter) could just help me drop off the extra crap at Goodwill or something that would be cool.

i have a small truck and not a whole lot to do, so if ya want some assistance with that, i could probably be cajoled

This reminds me of one of my favorite bumper stickers:

YES, this is my truck.
NO, I won't help you move.

It also reminds of a very funny story that I won't tell until AFTER the moving is completed.   ;)

Cela, re: COBRA - you're covered if you are willing to pay the premium.  You will automatically be covered for up to 60 days (about, 14 days to send the election plus 45 days for you to decide on your election).

You need to call your HR person or insurance company.  Many times your premium gives you automatic coverage through the end of the month (or at least normal pay period).  This would be good because your COBRA premium will be pretty hefty (welcome to being a female in your child bearing years ;)).  Hopefully, you can avoid actually electing for COBRA.  The nice thing about COBRA is that it will cover you retroactively if necessary, which means that you can use it if needed until your new insurance kicks in (since it will be inside 60 days), but if you don't, you just elect not to take it and never have to pay the premium.  In short, don't send in your election until the very end.*

*None of the above should be considered professional or any other type of solid legal advice. ;D

Sigh... and if only we all could be so happy each time we didn't pee blood.

Okay, any interpretations on this dream?

Under normal circumstances my shower drain drains slowly on a pretty regular basis due to my excess hair.

In my dream I go to turn on the shower and see that the tub is half full of old shower water from the last time I took one.  The water's been sitting there for however long and I didn't realize that that the drain was so clogged.

My only stab at it is that there's some kind of problem in my life that I don't fully yet realize is a problem and one day I'll recognize it and then wonder why I hadn't noticed it in all this time.

Fun answer:  You need to remember to buy some drain cleaner.

Real answer: Ex-bf issues/feeling have not been fully resolved, and him coming back into town triggered the realization.

I'll send you the therapy fee in the mail. :P

i would say that it relates to the whole idea of trying to reconcile your past/current life with your new soon to be future life. things that are current and familiar are getting harder and harder to let go off and realize that you have to start filtering out. however, you know to move on and have things pass smoothly you know you have to unclog your drain.

either that or brains just think of some crazy *&^% when sleeping, and it doesn't mean anything.

also from the back cover of the one dream interpretation book i once picked up and briefly looked at, i think the emotions you feel about a dream is typically more important than what the dream was about. unless youre dreamin about doin it of course  8)

ana, at first your story made me sad and empathetic, so i was further convinced to help you out, and take stuff from storage to goodwill, or whatever.

but then, as your story became more uplifting and hopeful, i realized that you were a strong independent woman, who could manage just fine on her own...so now i'm thinking i might be doin ya more of a favor by not "helping" you.

I was wondering that too and went to the beginning to see if anything had changed.  Didn't get very far except to realize that Crow has started deleting all of his posts professing his love for me.  Looks like someone's covering their a... uh, tracks.  ;)

Ha Ha Ha,
Yes, desperately trying to cover tracks. Actually, didn't pick and choose, just started from the beginning of the thread and started to delete posts, although I didn't get very far. I determined that it was never going to make it to that point where it was only my posts, so I decided to start deleting also.

I deleted a lot of posts after the Big Tex incident, and decided to start getting rid of some of this thread too.

I am sick (sore throat), and I have started taking care of car stuff. My car is registered in Texas now, and it is in the shop on 2222. Trying to get the car feeling like it isn't something terrible. At least I can ride the buses for free. Austin is cool like that.

I've been busy in Austin. It's amazing how many Texas Hold 'Em games y'all have here. ;). I got home at about 5 AM this morning, roughly $50 richer....

Crow!  You are deleting them faster than I can go back and reread them!  Slow down!

Oh phooey...Ana storms off to go smoke.

Just don't delete my b-day story, ok?  Leave that one, please?  Ok?

 :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Sorry, I was trying to get to page 25, but I wrote so many posts, there seemed to be no end. I will stop for now. Don't worry, won't delete b-day post. Must take nap. I don't like being sick.

Javert and Crow...basically none of the cute important ones!  (No offense J or Crow!)  i'm going t H-town...this is all that matters!  :D

And BTW, Ana loves you all!!!   :-*

Lots of offense taken. I know I am not cute or important (I prefer charming, dashing, brilliant, etc), but no need to mistreat our dear Javert.

By the way, what does HRH stand for?

Shoot, I've lost my phone. All of a sudden, no car, no phone. Hopefully I know where I left the phone. Without the phone, they can't call to tell me the car is ready.

Cool.

I'm gonna try to come back as often as my student loans can afford. I do have a fall break in late Oct. hopin I can find a flight back for a reasonable price. But with gas prices they are right now, I'm not holding my breath (Who the hell do we have to bomb to get some reasonable gas prices already?!).

Hey people, I will keep Austin warm for y'all while your gone. Maybe our next group happy hour will be to commiserate about the various pains in the necks at our different schools.

I have been sick lately, too darn often this summer.

I have been taking care of all the practical details, got my car title in Texas, car insurance in Texas, trying to figure out how to see a dentist without having insurance, started to buy books and all that jazz. I am rushed because I am leaving town Monday to go see relatives.

I should be moving stuff into my apartment on Saturday or Sunday and trying to buy a bed.

Hope all is well.

By the way Brooks, the answer to your question is Venezuela.

What have you been up to? How soon are you leaving?

God damn you Venezuela, you and your precious oil reserves....you go to hell, you go to hell and you die!!!

and now to the passive portion of our passive/aggressive show.

I'll be around all weekend, but then its peace out. So, if anyone is around and wants to get lunch or drinks or whatever, I am down. Stupid Indiana, why aren't you in Austin (sorry thats my aggresive side again, its the more pro-active part of my personality....ok i'm ramblin...check the time)
