i have no real problem with people making fun of my looks or behavior or any of my multiple flaws and failings as a human being, but i simply can't tolerate people making fun of my stuff or, more importantly,  having better stuff than me.

::takes a deep breath:: it's a dell inspiron 700m. i just bought it because i'm tired of not having a laptop. and i don't really need it for anything other than word-processing. ::exhales:: whew, that was hard.

please don't make fun of my computer. i still haven't seen it.  :'(

but my desktop is really powerful and shiny, i swear. i have an amazing graphics card. i have a huge hard drive. i have the best sound card one can buy. even my mouse is unbeatable. i've souped this kitty up nicely. i need a bigger monitor, though.

That's a very good laptop. If they don't make 17inch laptops under 7lbs by August, I'm probably going to buy a laptop similar to that one.

this makes me sad. this will be my first dell. as far as laptops go, i have owned a toshiba, a compaq tablet, and an hp-- i am hoping this dell will be good.
but, like i said, it's pretty much exclusively for writing papers in the library/taking notes in class, so it doesn't matter if it's a workhorse. i'm not gonna be doing any phot editing or gaming or anything hardcore with it. i considered having it solely run linux, but that's gonna be totally incompatable w/law school software, so i'll just leave that for my desktop. hopefully, opening microsoft office won't cause the laptop to crash.

(My guy-related rant...)

I am so f-ing SICK of the "skinny female dog" trend. I was hoping it would end soon, but it only seems to be getting worse. If you're in need of a particularly grotesque example, feel free to check out Teri Hatcher on "Desperate Housewives". Women who are that emaciated are becoming common now, and that to me is a problem. Not only is it unnatural, but it means that there's a growing cross-section of women in this country who actually put themselves through torturous regimens of anorexia in order to make themselves that way.

I'm ranting because it happened at the club this weekend. My friends looked at me like *I* was the one who was crazy because I opted for a very buxom and bodacious latina over this tapeworm of a white woman, and it seemed silly to me.

Don't get me wrong. This isn't some convulted, and idealistic social commentary on my part, no empathetic cry over the plight of modern women... It's pure perversion and selfishness on my part. I like my women to have some degree of physical substance, the welcome protrusions and curvatures that serve to distinguish the "gentler sex" with almost every proportionate increase in angularity and dimension. Not a series of jagged bones loosely connected by a slick cocoon of overly moistened skin.

I demand that those men, ESPECIALLY black men, explain themselves if they too suffer from ths "skinny fetish" like the rest of the country. I honestly dont get it, but would like to...

(...end rant)

I personally don't think that Terri Hatcher is THAT thin (based on the last time I saw her anyway) - she's more of the "uber-slim" population.  As for your rant about stick thin woomen - yeah I gotta agree with you.  I have no idea why anyone would find them attractive.  I get really grossed out when I see their arms - seems so snappable.  There has to be some sort of a healthy medium b/c super thin and fat!  Most of the guys I know aren't too swayed by overly thin women.  But there are those FEW who drool at the sight of skin and bones.  If one is like that naturally - well there isn't much you can say.  But if women actually STARVE themselves and go through endless psychological torture to get that way...well that's just sad.

The fact that Black men are represented well on this board speaks volumes to our struggle that is just picking up steam.  Response...

All the women in here shut up or get out.  Those are your two options.  You have demonstrated remarkably well how you can run threads into the ground.  LadyDay had to start her own thread just to have something positive for females on the BLSD.  You don't see the fellas cuttin each other down and callin each other burritos here.  Porch Monkeys maybe, but not burritos.

Ladies, we love ya, but this thread is for the fellas.

[walks over like Martin and opens up the door]

Now to address the substantive issue my man raised about male basing threads.  A true guy topic.  Yes Made4Law that stuff is played.  If Waiting to Exhale has taught us nothing, its that females pick the wrong ni@@as, and then turn around and complain about "men" when they should be complaining about their selection.

For the rest of the brothers on this board, continue to hold it down.  You are continuing to pave a way for our community as a whole.  My school just sponsored a Men of Color panel in which several DA's, Corporate Lawyers and Judges were present to share their experiences as men of color in the legal profession.  It was uplifting and enlightening at the same time.  One cat broke it down the best when he said that there is still very much a struggle that exists today in America as a whole and the in the legal practice.  White folk AND BLACK FOLK ALIKE will call up your firm for help on their case, will see your credentials on paper and request you specifically, and then when you show up in person their tune changes and they want somebody else.

One brother confirmed the mantra that many of us are familiar with.  Brothers, you have to work TWICE as hard to get 1/2 as far out there.  He was telling me that as a partner in his law firm, he has seen white associates produce work that would have got him thown out the door a long time ago.  As brothers, know that we have a small margin of error.  One slip up and that's it, they're ready to put you out of the practice.

I have a good feeling about this crop of brothers though.  Cats are definitely doing your thang out there.  Acceptances to top schools and the whole 9.

Keep your head up and your eyes open.

Yo

Black women aren't very good at selecting men. It's just the truth. I was watching Blind Date yesterday and this sista' had this smart educated yada yada black dude and she wasn't feelin' him for some bs reason. Pathetic really.

My answer is something in between (pun intended). The bigger the booty and boobs the longer they can talk.

This post affirms that I can speak  ;). And men ARE welcome on the ladies thread. Great post nonetheless, it actually is beneficial to both men of color as well as women.

men, i promise i won't start any drama.  i just had to say this:

pharaoh's article speaking on how the hip hop culture objectifies women is the answer as to why some women feel they need to be a sack of skin in bones to be beautiful.  this holds true of all media.  wasn't ice cube talking about 36-24-36?  and how old is that song?

it's in the media.  my man always told me i was beautiful, even when i gained a few pounds.  i always felt inadequate bc i've always been really athletic and in great shape.  those few lbs made me self-conscious of my body.  but hearing him tell me that he loved me, curves, cellulite, mini-rolls and all, made me feel more comfortable around him.

the media glorifies skinny women, and we have nothing else telling us that a few love-handles are just as beautiful.  some women need that affirmation, and that duty falls on those from whom most women seek the most acceptance from these days:  their men.

it's up to you men to change the perception of beauty.  you have hilfiger, CK, versace, and all those other old white men dictating what beauty is.  do their views reflect you own?  i doubt it.  so please do something about it.   a kind, non-degrading word from a sweet man goes a long way in some women's lives.

i have a question for the guys thread. and maybe its been discussed b/f. but the perception among some black women i know is that the higher education a black man gets, the more likely he will end up with a white (or other) woman. it seems that way, b/c when we looked at our profs, most of the guys in grad school, med school etc. they were dating/married to non-black women. is this perception really skewed?

Some Stats (y'all know I love bringing data)

70% of all white/black interracial marriages involve a black man and a white women, only 30% involve a black woman and a white man.

An Article in National Review stated that when compared to White men, White women were 10 times more likely to report that their most recent sexual partner was Black.

(Basically black men are attracted to white women and vice versa)BP

Note however 97% of all marriages in the country involve people of the same race.

(so they really arent' getting married that much though, just doing the nasty)BP

-
So it's not really clear that black men end up with white women in such huge numbers, they seem to just hook up/date, whatever is the pc way of saying it, but they don't end up getting married in huge numbers.

thats interesting. 97% of couples involve people of the same race. i have to say that although it seems that way in the world, it doesn't seem that way in the academy. but i def. believe the stat about black women and white men. i can't say i know that many black women who date white guys at all.
Title: Re: The Guys' Thread
Post by: Made4law on February 23, 2005, 09:53:12 AM
Black Women probably don't date white men and especially don't marry them that much for a variety of reasons. Most of which is a lot of white men aren't that attracted to our sista's, they like flat booties and no shapes. Black women like to have their world rocked in ways only men of color can provide.  I'm sure the reasons are more in depth than above like "birds of a feather flock together" We are around our own people more than other races. It is also a mother/ father connection if the bonds were strong at home with women and their fathers than they look for a man of similar characteristics, the same goes for men. It may also have a lot to do with exterior perceptions that interacial dating encourage.

You know what I've noticed lately?  A lot of guys with cornrows and throwbacks are walking around with white women on their arms.. I say go for it..they're taking them off of our  hands...

But to seriously answer your question, it seemed to be a trend at my UG institution. Most of the black women on the yrd dated white men. Most of the black guys dated white women. They were all lost IMO. It just seems as if some people attribute success to the life of a caucasion. In turn they will do whatever they can to identify. Date caucasions, separate themselves from their upbringing and family (that may be less educated than them) and have bi-racial children that they in-turn raise without knowing their African American heritage.

I've heard various black men say that white women are easier to be with. They're more submissive, they'll comply in the bedroom easier etc.

RBG, is there any way to amend that poll to include the option, "The poll doesn't apply to me bc I'm a female and I'm choosing this option bc I want to see the results of the poll."  Or something?  If the females can't/don't vote then there's no way for us to see what you men are voting.  And I think we're all curious but don't want to mess your poll up.

Black men dating white women that have that specific view. A lot of people do attribute success as the life style of a caucasion. They lose all sense of self in the process because they aspire to become white.

Usually I'm not bothered by Black men dating outside of their race, however I do get annoyed when I see certain black men exclusively outside of their race. That sends a message to society that black women aren't good enough for them. I also get sick when Non-black women who have Mandingo syndrome where all they talk about is the black man's physical attributes as if he's a buck. It's really obnoxious. You never hear a white woman talking about her white boyfriend like "Oh Robert has milky white skin..." come on now. Black men are more than just physical specimens.

I have flaws.. (HERE ThAT PEOPLE! I HAVE FLAWS I ADMIT IT DAMMIT!)

SO what is the real deal with black men's obession with booties? Breast don't seem to matter much. A girl can have a flat chest, but if she as booty, it's all good. Someone please break it down for the ladies to understand the big deal about booty?

LOL@ Sands though, did someone really call someone a burrito?  Daymn, that's messed up, I must have missed that post.

On another note, I feel that cat on the skinny girl rant.  How could someone bypass a curvy buxom woman for one of those Hollywood looking sticks?

Correction, SOME of you were on the ladies' board like white on rice.  You will see no post from the rest of the fellas in there.  That's their board to discuss biz that has to do with female issues.

RBG - you started this thread.  Regulate.

Don't worry Sands.  When you guys start talking about jock itch and blue balls, the ladies won't have much to contribute.  But then again, I wouldn't be surprised.  Collectively, we do seem to know a little bit about everything...  ;D

The booty cannot be justified or explained.  It stands on its own merit.  The booty just is.

I dunno. There is just something about a big booty. I can't put it into words.

But, I chose eyes.

I guess I'm the only "eyes" man.

Eyes are important, but the question was specifically about being sexy.  I'm not sure I would equate eyes with sex before other more direct parts of the anatomy ;-)

And where are all the feet men?  It's an anonymous poll, you can admit it!  LOL

Dictionary.com defines sexy as "Arousing or tending to arouse sexual desire or interest." In light of this info, I still say eyes.

it's the waist/hip ratio too, right? supposedly it's a fertility thing.

this might belong on the ladies' thread, but on the news 2 days ago they were reporting a study that showed women on the pill were significantly more attracted to big healthy guys (i.e. the change in hormones upped the importance of choosing a mate who produces the offspring best equipped to survive...) --so fascinating.

Quote
PRUDE:
Word History: Being called a prude is rarely considered a compliment, but if we dig into the history of the word prude, we find that it has a noble past. The change for the worse took place in French. French prude first had a good sense, “wise woman,” but apparently a woman could be too wise or, in the eyes of some, too observant of decorum and propriety. Thus prude took on the sense in French that was brought into English along with the word, first recorded in 1704. The French word prude was a shortened form of prude femme (earlier in Old French prode femme), a word modeled on earlier preudomme, “a man of experience and integrity.” The second part of this word is, of course, homme, “man.” Old French prod, meaning “wise, prudent,” is from Vulgar Latin prdis with the same sense. Prdis in turn comes from Late Latin prde, “advantageous,” derived from the verb prdesse, “to be good.” Despite this history filled with usefulness, profit, wisdom, and integrity, prude has become a term of reproach.
prude

n : a person excessively concerned about propriety and decorum [syn: puritan]

Me and my randomness LOL...

Eeek!

In the first pic, the guy looks "safe." Can't really explain it; that's what first came to mind. Like they wouldn't have too much trouble in a typical suburbian neighborhood or something.

The later pic, though, I thought was cute. The guy looks like a total WASP, and yet both him and his lady are beaming. It doesn't look like anyone is compromising any culture by being in the relationship: she does, indeed, look strong and proud of her culture, and the guy's not trying to 'adopt' her african culture or anything. Kinky, kinda, but cute.

The guys that like the straight hair over the locs are probably the same guys that date white women.  I think natural women are potentially much more beautiful.

How are your friends treated? Less attention...?Freshman year I cut my hair from my back to my shoulders and people were just falling over having a heart attack. I got more attention with long straight hair versus when I cut it short. Even now if I decide to wash it and go, I don't get as much attention as wearing it straight. I'm telling its that European ideal for beauty.

I think men with neat locks are SOOOOOOOOOOOOO sexy. I was a jamba juice the other day and this beautiful black man walked in with long locks in a suit. I wanted to jump him right then and there...and he had hazel eyes..girl...I wish I took a picture with my camera phone.

There is this African girl from Ghana at my school is who amazing looking. She looks like a freaking model. I'm not exaggerating when I say she will blow Hallie Berry, Tyra Banks, Iman, etc... out of the window. She has dark flawless skin, full lips, tall, and she has a fade (is that what you call it?). She looks so amazing. I couldn't picture her with long hair. The girl's beauty is breath taking.

hair, body, clothing, shoes, car.  Of course it varies from man to man.  But I'm guessing most men dont have the ability to recognize a "cute" woman unless she's all put together.  Which possibly speaks to blk's original comment about how her friend is treated differently.

I think that in some ways it depends on location. People tend to look at you sideways when you're in the south with natural hair. They're more accepting of it in places like NYC, DC, and Chicago.

Don't worry about it, Sis'. The fellas have openly allowed the covenant to be acquiesced, therefore it's no longer a valid Guy's Thread Covenant anymore.

More ladies post here than fellas anyway.

In the essence of male topics, I'll at least put this one out for the fellas (maybe this will spark some sack grabbin around here):

i don't care about my kids' name, just my own. basically i reversed it on him and said "after all of your accomplishments and the connections you've made and the work of which you're proud, imagine that you took your name and basically threw it out and started over? so friends/people you worked with in the past would have a hard time finding you, your old identity is no longer anyone, and you start fresh with a new identity just b/c that's the custom? would it make you feel like the life you've lived up to this point is legitimate and valuable, or more like you were put in the witness protection program? someone remembers you and wants to track you down, checks the yellow pages, and you don't exist. not a problem?"

he was like, oh. i see. that would suck.

i basically said sure, the tradition goes way back, but so did the traditions of women not voting and not being allowed to own property, etc. our moms changed their names, but they were both 19 when they got married. i don't know, i'm not 100% opposed, but i don't really want to give up everything that goes with my name per the above.

boys, please feel free to weigh in   ;)

I don't like that car.

 :o

You have no soul!!!

BP - I'm not sure what the price is, but the normal 6 series costs $75,000.  With most M models, you can be sure to add about 10k on top of that for all the performance modifications that M puts into the car. So it will end up costing more than the 745

Gully sh*t of the day:
CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- An appeals court said a man can press a claim for emotional distress after learning a former lover had used his sperm to have a baby. But he can't claim theft, the ruling said, because the sperm were hers to keep.

The ruling Wednesday by the Illinois Appellate Court sends Dr. Richard O. Phillips' distress case back to trial court.

Phillips accuses Dr. Sharon Irons of a "calculated, profound personal betrayal" after their affair six years ago, saying she secretly kept semen after they had oral sex, then used it to get pregnant.

He said he didn't find out about the child for nearly two years, when Irons filed a paternity lawsuit. DNA tests confirmed Phillips was the father, the court papers state.

Phillips was ordered to pay about $800 a month in child support, said Irons' attorney, Enrico Mirabelli.

Phillips sued Irons, claiming he has had trouble sleeping and eating and has been haunted by "feelings of being trapped in a nightmare," court papers state.

Irons responded that her alleged actions weren't "truly extreme and outrageous" and that Phillips' pain wasn't bad enough to merit a lawsuit. The circuit court agreed and dismissed Phillips' lawsuit in 2003.

But the higher court ruled that, if Phillips' story is true, Irons "deceitfully engaged in sexual acts, which no reasonable person would expect could result in pregnancy, to use plaintiff's sperm in an unorthodox, unanticipated manner yielding extreme consequences."

CNN (AP)
“Homicide is a leading cause of pregnancy-associated injury deaths,” Jeani Chang and colleagues wrote in the latest issue of the American Journal of Public Health.

They investigated the deaths of women who died while pregnant or within a year of being pregnant between 1991 and 1999 and found 1,993 that were caused by injury, compared with 4,200 that were directly related to pregnancy complications.

Car accidents first
Of the injury-related deaths, 617 or 31 percent were ruled homicide, making murder the second most common cause of injury-related death for pregnant women after car accidents.

The homicide rate for pregnant black women was more than triple that for white women, the researchers said.

Most of the murdered women, 56 percent, were shot to death while the rest were either stabbed or strangled.

Lesson for the men: After you bust a nut inside of the condom, please take the condom (yourself) and flush it down the toliet.

I have a guy friend right now who is the victim of a similar crime. He's on his way to law school and some chicken he messed with took the condom out of the trash can and stuffed it inside of her vagina. Now she's pregnant.

Skanks are getting bold these days.  ::)

2. The second highest cause of death in pregnant women being murder.

No Flames needed. You have an excellent point BP. If I was a guy and a female did that to me, I would want to murder her too. That's so foul and a violation of an individual's choice. I can understand accidentally pregnancies, but if you deliberately tried to get pregnant after the other party voiced their concerns against it, that woman is wrong.

Let the following story serve as a warning:  (True Story, I know the girl and the guy) This guy meets this girl at a club and after a few drinks and some convo takes her to his place, knocks boots (raw), exchange phone numbers and then drops the girl off at home a few hours later. The girl goes home and goes to sleep, she is awaken by a phone call in the morning from her long-term boyfriend of 2 years, whom she had broken up with the day before, before going to the club getting sh@t-faced and F@cked.  Her boyfriend then asks to come over so they can make up, she agrees, he comes over they make-up, screw and everyones happy.  The guy from the club calls after the boyfriend leaves the house, trying for another booty call, the girl tells him she has a boyfriend and last night was a mistake. She tells the guy that they won't be hooking up for any reason but can remain friends but basically don't call her again.  The girl starts feeling guilty and confesses her indiscretion to her boyfriend and he hits the roof, curses girl out and then breaks up with her again, this time for good.  Three months past and the girl finds out she is pregnant, calls ex-boyfriend to tell him it is his, he says "F-U, the baby is probably not mine, call me after the baby is born, I want a DNA test."  One month later club guy calls she tells him she is pregnant, he asks if she thinks it might be his, she says no he asks if she is sure, she says she is positive, he then tells her he will pay for her to have an abortion if that what she wants even though it is not his.  She assures him that is not his kid it is her boyfriend's of 2 yrs baby, he says ok and hangs up.  Fast forward 13 mos. the baby is 5mos old now and the DNA tests come back for the ex-boyfriend and you guessed it, it was not his baby. Fast forward 7 mos. the girl gets charged up by her mom to go after the one night stand guy. She calls the one-night stand guy and tells him the news he says FU I want a blood test. Two months past and the tests come back that the baby is his. He freaks because he is married w/ children.  He offers to give the girl everything that he has in his life savings $28,000, she says no, ends up hitting him up for child support of $600/mo until the kid turns 18 and $7000 Back child support for the time when he didn't even know she had the kid. (True story, child is now 11 y/o, has met her father only a handful of times, guy ended up divorced, child support is now up to $700)

I voted for the Deltas TWICE   :D

But i'm PMing you because I don't feel like announcing this to the whole board until December...what's been going on with me?

I'm PREGNANT!!!! You thought I was writing all those messages while I was thinking about it? Nope, I was actively working on it. Took only one try though. Guess I'm pretty fertile after all  ;D

Anyway, I'm 5 weeks, 3days (conceived around Sept. 23...don't try to calulate it...doctors add on a couple of weeks cause they're weird).

So I'll announce it if I feel so inclined when I'm 12 weeks (less chance for miscarriage then).

Yay!!!!!!!

Oh, and I'm telling you even though you picked the wrong sorority  ;D (just kidding!)

Lavia

AWWW wrong Sorority my ass...remember who came first! Hahaha. Well congratulations, but I have one concern. What about law school? Are you going to take a break? I planned it so my baby would be due during the summer break...june 19. No need to take a break. I'm going straight through...best time to have a baby. I have more time on my hands now!!Doesn't having a baby and trying to finish law school seem kinda hard. I know there are single parents in law school, but you're preggers. What about morning sickness? LOL.  I'm not going to get morning sickness. But I won't be the first or the last to be pregnant during law school. Others have done it during law school on purpose as well. I don't think it'll be hard at all, no harder than lawschool in and of itself.Do you have help? Man I wouldn't be able to do it, but you know what works best for you. I wish you the best of luck in the future and a blessed pregnancy. Hey is the dad going to help out? Nope. I'm a Single Mother By Choice. This has been my plan for years. Finally came to fruition! Yay!!!!!!! Thanks for the congratulations! As far as help, it takes a village, and I have a bunch of fellow students in school. Otherwise, it's me and my baby, just the way I wanted it!  :) But I completely think this isn't for everyone. It's only for those who want it. I want this. Others don't, so they couldn't do it. But then again, there are women who accidentally wind up pregnant and single in law school, and they find a way too. And there are those that do it on purpose...mothers find a way. But I'll have it so much easier since I want it more than anything. Also, law school isn't my passion. I'm going so I can provide for my future child. My goal in life has only and always been one thing...to be a mother! Yay!!!!! Got 8 more months to go.

Why do the courts continue to let women trap men and then make the guys pay F@CKING CHILD SUPPORT!!!!! for a kid they literally thought was swallowed.

Once you consent to sex with a chick you can't turn around and claim theft of something you gave up.  The court got it right on this one.  But what IS jacked up, like you pointed out, is the entire child support set up.  Basically once a chick has a kid she has it made.  Some further review of the facts is definitely in order. Gold diggin ghetto queens get pregnant by these big dummy football and NBA players and end up literally winning the loterry, and they know it.  Even the AVERAGE figures for child support for the superstars is in the 10's of thousands of dollars PER MONTH.  That just doesn't have any rational basis.

To digress, How about those NBA trades today and yesterday.  C-Webb to Philly I like for Philly but wtf? Are the Kings thinking Corliss Williams, Brian Skinner and Kenny Thomas, all 3 have at least 3 yrs left on their contract.

I truly think Isaiah Thomas needs to get an award for single-handedly burying the Knicks at the bottom of the League for the next 5 years. Seriously, how in the hell is he keeping his job he has not made one move to lessen the cap or make the Knicks a better team. Oh well, I don't even like the Knicks but I'm starting to feel for their fans.

Yo, that Webber trade don't make no damn sense.

Sands, situations like that make a guy not to want sex..but deep down you guys don't mean it? Once they see a girl with an applebottom butt, they start thinking with the other head.  ::)

I witcha about the Webber trade, I like C-Webb and the Sixers but why would the Kings even entertain this trade. Philly's GM must have naked pics of the Kings GM with underage boys or something. I wouldn't have done this in a million years.

Also, Antoine Walker is going back to Boston, I likes this trade for Boston (I didn't think they should have traded him in the first place) but Atlanta gets nothing out of it.  Hey if any of you are Kings fans I have Georgo Maloof's cell phone number if you want to holla at him. (Thanks Paris)

Yeah, I can't figure it out either..maybe it's to get rid of the huge webber salary...but even that doesn't make alot of sense cause the three cats that rolled to the Kings still have some years left on some reasonably healthy contracts.

Antoine back to Boston..interesting yet bizarre to be back so quickly...

How does David Stern and the League allow these guaranteed contracts to continue? the same for baseball, football is the only one making these guys earn their money.  How cool would it be if Law Firms gave guaranteed contracts? Like 5 yrs at 2.2 mil with a $100k signing bonus. I would have definetly studied harder for the LSAT.  8) 8) 8) 8)

David Stern is a lawyer by the way, which would help to explain how these unilateral contracts are sustained.

You're not too far off on the notion of Law firms giving guaranteed contracts & signing bonuses.  Many firms give you a signing bonus when you are hired.  I got a frat bruh in NYC who just left a firm in NYC to go to a firm in DC who is paying him even more loot, and he's only 3 years out of law school.  As a 3rd year Assoc. he was making $174,000 base at the NY firm and recieved a $50,000 bonus last year.  Dog, my salary as an engineer was $50,000 a year, and that was his bonus last year.

Casting Will Smith’s love interest in “Hitch” was not a simple black or white decision.

Eva Mendes was given the role opposite Smith because the moviemakers were worried about the public’s reaction if the part was given to a white or an African American actress, according to Smith. The actor is saying that it was feared that a black couple would have put off worldwide audiences whereas a white/African American combo would have offended viewers in the U.S.“There’s sort of an accepted myth that if you have two black actors, a male and a female, in the lead of a romantic comedy, that people around the world don’t want to see it,” Smith told the British paper, the Birmingham Post while promoting the flick overseas. “We spend $50-something million making this movie and the studio would think that was tough on their investment. So the idea of a black actor and a white actress comes up — that’ll work around the world, but it’s a problem in the U.S.”

Eva Mendes — who is of Cuban descent — was seen as a solution because apparently, the black/Latina combination is not considered taboo.

Sony didn’t return calls for comment.

That's very interesting.  Very intresting because its true.

I would argue that if they would have had another black female actress opposite Will Smith then people in the US would have dubbed it a "Black Film" and the white folk wouldn't go out to see it.  And none of us are ready to see a Will Smith/Britney Spears pair up so...

No way ma.  Hitch is some of the funnies sh!t I've seen in a long time.  Anybody who's single will instantly relate to it.  Anybody who's in a relationship currently will remember the dating days and how they got to where they're at now.  If consistently stays entertaining throughout.  I'll admit the ending could have been stronger but hey, nobody's perfect.

yeah we did, what happened?? <sands is gonna whoop my ass>

i don't care about my kids' name, just my own. basically i reversed it on him and said "after all of your accomplishments and the connections you've made and the work of which you're proud, imagine that you took your name and basically threw it out and started over? so friends/people you worked with in the past would have a hard time finding you, your old identity is no longer anyone, and you start fresh with a new identity just b/c that's the custom? would it make you feel like the life you've lived up to this point is legitimate and valuable, or more like you were put in the witness protection program? someone remembers you and wants to track you down, checks the yellow pages, and you don't exist. not a problem?"

he was like, oh. i see. that would suck.

i basically said sure, the tradition goes way back, but so did the traditions of women not voting and not being allowed to own property, etc. our moms changed their names, but they were both 19 when they got married. i don't know, i'm not 100% opposed, but i don't really want to give up everything that goes with my name per the above.

boys, please feel free to weigh in   ;)

These monkeys on here aren't going to weigh in b/c they all fully expect their women to change their names for them despite the hellified argument you put forth.

You pretty much broke it down as to why I have no intention on changing my last name. Plus, my name carries a lot of heritage with it just as much as my husband's does. My children are having my name too, @#!* that, I've seen women giving birth on tv before and I be damned I give the kids just his name after all that.  :P

Plain and Simple I would not ever marry a woman who would even argue this point about changing her name and especially if she even thought about not giving My kids my name. If you like your name that much keep it, I'll just go and find a woman who appreciates the value of a good man and wants to become my wife with my name.  Remember ladies there are more good women out there than there are good men, tread carefully and pick your battles wisely.

Personally I couldn't care less...my name is not my name anyhow, and I'm serious about this.  So makes no difference in my eyes...it's the name of a family from England that built a plantation over this side of the pond and recruited a few workers from Africa to help out..hehe Shoot, I might be the one ending up changing my name..

Aren't you married anyway? But anyway, on the same line, I would never marry a man who had the type of close minded self serving view that you do, and I certainly wouldn't want to raise children with that type of person either. You'd actually be quite surprised, men that I have dated in the past didn't care about me not changing my name, the issue was usually the last name of the children. I look forward to meeting a good man who will also appreciate the love of a good woman like me and doesn't have the view that I should consider myself lucky to be with him.

I'll probably hyphenate my last name depending on my status in society, but my children will definitely take my husband's last name. I’ve heard of couples taking each other’s name as well. The issue of names is so arbitrary. I would hope that people focus on other important aspects of getting married besides a name. A name isn’t going to keep a marriage together.

I have no problem with the whole hyphenated thing. My issue is after having my female private part all stretched the hell out and all my husband had to do was run up in me (which he gets full enjoyment out of) I'll be damned my *&^% is just forgotten. The issue of names is arbitrary, b/c women have always just bowed down and taken their husband's. I can't predict the future so all I'll say is we'll see.................

it has to do with what i posted earlier, for me personally-- i've published articles, spoken at conferences, met so many people... it's imortant to me that [insert my name] not just disappear. my bf has a great name and of course i'd be proud to share it, but it would also feel like a big loss in a lot of ways. & in the legal world i would be very proud to be my father's daughter, and known as such. but as panther said, my name isn't so "mine" either-- a lot of jewish names got shortened or changed a couple generations back.

Thank you, I could probably be persuaded with the hyphenated thing, but it would be a tough argument.  I am not close minded, I have white and gay friends  ::) Yes, I am married w/children (boys) how would it look if they had their moms name and we both raised them from the gitty-up.  When you get married you are not the same person anymore, think long term not just the past 20 or 30 yrs before you were married think about the 50 yrs after you are married. You should be honored that someone is going to take your hand in marriage and take care of you when you are down, sick, depressed, etc.

B/c my last name is a part of my identity the same way it is for men. And you can only be proud of starting your new life together by changing your name to his? I guess I don't plan on being one of those types of women who's life is defined by her husband. Kinda like Vanessa Bell-Calloway (notice the hyphenation) in Coming to America:

"Whatever kind of music you like"

 I am not close minded,

because you say you're not?

proclaiming that this one detail would be a dealbreaker and you would basically refuse to hear the other side is the epitome of close-mindedness. i mean, it's fine that you feel strongly about it, but your other post was pretty defensive for someone who "isn't close-minded."

sometimes it's not about the outcome, it's about both sides listening to each other...
whatever, doesn't matter much obviously as you're already married.

I guess the same way it looks that they have your last name and you both raised them from gitty up  ::) And you should be honored in the same way, duh. Marriage is a reciprocal thing. You see, why do people make marriage out to be like the man only gives and the women just takes (save the jokes) I'm being serious here. Your kids, your name, your house, what you give, I'm sure your wife gives to you just as much as you give to her, otherwise you wouldn't be married.

but as panther said, my name isn't so "mine" either-- a lot of jewish names got shortened or changed a couple generations back.

Here's a better question:

Why do women ask women questions to other women in the Guys thread?

Not necessarily. For me, taking my husband's last name would be an honor. My name is just a very small part of my idenitity as a woman. When two people join together, in theory they are suppose to become one person. But do you.

Where did these quotes come from? But if you're referring to me, I didn't say it was a deal breaker, I'm saying I feel very strongly about the situation. Like I said, I can't predict the future, we'll see.

"Wait, wait honey, I'm coming with you, remember we're one person!"

Yes, I am married w/children (boys) how would it look if they had their moms name and we both raised them from the gitty-up.  When you get married you are not the same person anymore, think long term not just the past 20 or 30 yrs before you were married think about the 50 yrs after you are married. You should be honored that someone is going to take your hand in marriage and take care of you when you are down, sick, depressed, etc.

My wife gives me all I need. But that does not change the fact that I asked her to marry me not the other way around.  And, It's a man's world. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Speaking of which (quick question before I go off to my Spanish midterm), how do you feel about women asking me for their hand in marriage?

I dunno, I'm kinda old fashion. I don't think I could ever ask a man to marry me. He needs to get on the one knee and ask for my hand.

no no, i'm with you-- it was made4law who said (earlier, then kinda modified) that it was a dealbreaker. i wanted to talk to my bf to hear what he thought, and let him hear what i thought, not to have my rant and be done with it.

there's no easy answer right now b/c people are doing it 12 diff ways and no one knows how to alphabetize you or address your mail anyway  :P

I'm just joking. Ummmm, that I will agree with you on. I would feel desperate yo. I just couldn't do it. To me, if a guy wants to marry you, he'll ask. And if he doesn't, he won't ask.

Believe me my wife is proud to have my name, because she knows the name alone means less to me than the symbolic gesture. By having my name it is inferring that she is mine not her parents but mine, all mine to do with as I please. muuuuuaaaaaaa (fiendish laugh)

Okay, guys explain why are some couples together for seven years stringing the woman along, then the man dumps her? I heard of cases of couples being together for 5+ years, then they break up b/c of the issue of marriage. Later on the guy gets married to another woman who he's been with for less than two years...What is the deal with that?!

B/c a man knows after a year whether or not he wants to marry you. If he doesn't ask or suggest it after a year, he's still looking.

Oh, and the reason he won't break it off is b/c WHY THE HELL SHOULD HE? If the woman is giving him everything a wife would without him legally having to step up, why would he. Remember the sayings having your cake and eating it to -or- "getting milk without having to buy the whole cow" or some *&^% like that.

Well she has two options:

1. Wake the hell up and bounce

-or-

2. Stay with him and hope that after a few years he will finally give up "looking" and will settle for her. Sounds harsh but that's reality. Famous quote: "We ain't getting no younger girl we might as well do it"
