Title: Yale Holds?
Post by: QueenoftheCourt on February 15, 2008, 10:49:27 AM
I just received an email that "based on the strength of my candidacy" I would either receive an offer of admission or a spot on the waitlist.

Is this essentially a deferral? Did anyone else get this?

Seriously, I might not get a decision until mid-April? This is going to be torturous.  :(

Edit: I'm wondering if this is a new thing this year. I couldn't find any mention of a similar email going out last year on LSN.

not a rejection!!!

(oh btw, i'm done with internet arguments for today, my heart wouldn't be in it)

Well, I'm pretty happy I won't get a rejection, but I'm wondering if I should send an extra LOR or a letter of LOCI.

I honestly don't think my file is going to past muster with their faculty adcomm, so waitlist it is.  :-\

the attached pdf discourages additional info other than grades, from what my scattered brain recalls after a quick read.

When did you all apply?
Title: Re: Yale Holds?
Post by: QueenoftheCourt on February 15, 2008, 11:07:28 AM
I applied late October.

Title: Re: Yale Holds?

beginning of November for me.

I thought the next few months of waiting couldn't get worse. It seems I was wrong. However, this is still a very exciting thing for me at least. Offer or waitlist.

My optimistic self is not calling this a deferral or hold. Both of those could resolve into a rejection. This will resolve into an acceptance or a waitlist (which I realize for practical purposes could very well be a rejection). But. Still. I'm pretty smiley.

You guys were so great they had to invent a whole new admissions decision for you!  I'll be rooting for your acceptances.

Its looks like applicants from that cycle received the email in April - and nearly all were waitlisted.  :(

But maybe the fact that we got the email in mid February is a good sign?

Call me an optimist, but from the email:

Quote
Because each application is carefully and independently reviewed by up to four readers, you may hear from us later than many other law schools.  You should receive a final decision by mid-April.

and the attached FAQ:

Quote
When are decisions made?
The bulk of our decisions go out from mid-March to mid-April with our goal to have all
decisions made by April 15.

In combination, these seem to me to suggest that most eventually accepted applicants (i.e. those falling in the "bulk of decisions" who haven't yet heard) would have received this email. I'm going to choose to take it as very good news.

Also got the email.  I'm glad they "discourage" additional materials.  Less work.

I think it's hard to say because those emails went out mid-April. It was probably part of a completely different system. The email coming in February is probably a good sign. However, I thought from the LSN numbers that they hadn't even admitted half the class yet (in comparison to last year). Does that mean that they already know everyone else they'll be calling and this email makes up the waitlist group?
Title: Re: Yale Holds?
Post by: QueenoftheCourt on February 15, 2008, 11:57:28 AM
After reading some of these comments, I'm feeling a bit more optimistic. My only hope is that we receive a decision in time for us to visit and get a fin. aid offer back (if admitted of course).

I do feel that a waitlist essentially is tantamount to a rejection at Yale. I mean "0-10 taken off the waitlist" each year? What wonderful odds... :D

Since I haven't heard from Stanford or Harvard yet, I'm not planning on putting this info on LSN. I really debated whether to even post in calgirl's thread (sorry, that's just how I think of you!) but vanity did not allow me to pass it by.

Hey, I'm honest about my weaknesses.... (sometimes... mostly)

I got the email, too. Was initially very excited, then realized that this might be a likely waitlist indicator. Fingers are crossed for a decisive and positive decision. Good luck to y'all!

I read it (hopefully) as a "please stop calling us you neurotic freaks" email, and less as a definite sign of waitlist limbo hell. I haven't called for any updates, so it made me feel warm and fuzzy that they know I'm alive, especially since I applied in October. Then came the cold sweat and panic for a variety of reasons, many covered in the above posts.

I thought 11/12 was still almost a guaranteed in? Might be more like a 10/12 which I think is more the danger zone?
Title: Re: Yale Holds?
Post by: BrockSamson on February 16, 2008, 12:27:49 PM
11/12 is almost a guaranteed in (they say all 12's and most 11's get an acceptance), but it's also true that most of Yale's acceptances are sent out between March and April. I think that the 12's are the auto-admits who get calls early, and they hold most of the 11's over until they get a fuller look at their applicant pool (it doesn't cost them anything to wait, and as a small school they have a vested interest in waiting to see how the full applicant pool shapes up before crafting their class). I'm not saying that the e-mail implies an eventual admittance, but I don't think it necessarily implies an eventual waitlist-rejection either (it would be rather cruel of them to get people's hopes up if they're definitely planning to waitlist).

Whoops, they just called with an admission a couple days after the "hold" e-mail.  I guess their paperwork was moving a little faster than they were expecting.

Congrats to the recent acceptees... that's crazy they accepted you two days after the quasi-deferral.

What do you guys think it means if we applied early, haven't been rejected, and didn't receive the deferral email? Can we pretty much bank on a rejection now? Or do we still stand a chance?

Speculation: I think I'd worry a little bit about the lack of an e-mail if I were in your shoes, but I wouldn't read too much into the post-hoc admissions.  Likely not that big a deal.

I got the e-mail today, about a month after the inital e-mails went out.  Granted, I applied later (late December) and thus went complete later (late January), but I hope that this does not necessarily mean that I'm going to get waitlisted (given what happened to the mid-April e-mail recepients last year)...

(Here's hoping for a two day turn around like devilishlyblue!)

Bump.

Has anyone who was deferred in the first batch of emails received a decision  yet (excluding those who heard back right away)?

We're supposed to receive a final decision by mid-April...here's hoping.  :)

I'm still waiting, too, although I was part of the second batch of deferral e-mails that went out in mid-March.

Hopefully, we'll all hear good news really, really soon!   :D

My email said that they emailed rather than snail mailed because I had contacted them in regards to a deadline. So I don't know if everyone will get wl'ed by email or if some will have to wait for snail mail. Best of luck to the rest of you.

Waitlisted by email this morning at 6 am PST. They are sending out snail mail letters next week, but I had emailed them since I have a scholarship deadline today.

I contacted them regarding to a scholarship deadline through email.  However, I still haven't heard anything from them.  To those who received a decision through email, did you mail or email them to tell them about your deadlines?

I think a huge flood of snail mail waitlist notifications arrived today....boo.  :(

EDIT: Check that, I just received a waitlist notification via email today (and I didn't contact them about deadlines).

Is anyone planning on staying on? I'm a bit conflicted.

An average of 3 people a year from about 100, that's fairly grim.
Title: Re: Yale Holds?
Post by: QueenoftheCourt on April 15, 2008, 08:37:05 PM
I know - it seems like a waitlist is a soft rejection, especially because their yield is so high.

I'm not sure I want to stay on simply because I want closure. Even if I were accepted, it would be so difficult to forfeit a deposit at another school, completely redo my housing plans and ditch my would-be roommates - not to mention the emotional roller coaster of changing my plans so dramatically. Secondly, it would be hard to accept an offer without having the chance to go to an ASW to get the feel of the school.

Then again..it is Yale! Maybe its worth waiting for.  :-\

Just got the waitlist email also...

Never contacted about deadlines, either... So looks like a last minute decision.

QueenoftheCourt, I've been in a very similar situation as you from the beginning...

A much higher second LSAT score, November HLS admission, then Hamilton offer, then the Yale deferral in mid-March...

I also wanted to go to Yale very much for various reasons, but hey, now our loyalties must be with Harvard. Look forward to meeting you!

Haha- it has been an interesting cycle. I'm going to wait until the inevitable Stanford waitlist for a week or so, the send in my deposit.

Although I must say, Yale, if you were going to waitlist nearly everyone in the deferral pool, why not tell us that two months ago?

It looks like  they are wait-listing way more people this year. There are 28 already on LSN the first day (so all may not have gone out yet, and certainly not everyone has put it up on LSN yet), after only 21 by the end of last cycle.

That's interesting..

I'm wondering if this is a good thing or not - maybe Yale is being cautious and accepting fewer people until they see their yield rates - in which case, they might use their waitlist. Or (more likely), a waitlist is pretty much a rejection and very few if any people will be given offers an even larger waitlist than years prior.

And I noticed that no one was accepted off the waitlist on LSN last year.

Sorry for the late post, but I too got the WL e-mail on Tuesday evening,  Admittedly, even though I guess I figured on it, it was really disappointing.  I submitted my WL form, so I'll see what happens with that, but now that it's been a few days, I do feel better about it.  After all, if it's not meant to be, then it's not meant to be and I just have to accept that God has other plans for me.

So now I have until May 1st to pick between HLS and CLS and I really just don't know how I'm going to do it...
