Parents!!!
« on: January 30, 2006, 08:17:22 PM »
I'm sorry if I missed the thread, but I couldn't find any information on what to do if your parents outright refuse to give out their tax information to those law schools that require it.  It seems like there must be a way around this problem, for those people whose parents who are so paranoid about someone else seeing their financial information that they would rather hurt their own son or daughter's chances of getting financial aid than give out that kind of information.

Thanks - (I am frustrated beyond belief right now)

Columbia's Financial Aid materials state that "If parents refuse to give information, our policy is that no grant may be awarded."  I'm guessing that peer institutions have similar policies, but you should probably check up with each individual school

Emory's scholarship application allows you to explain in a paragraph format why you haven't included parental information, which requires you send in a tax return by February 1 for both you and your parents. I didn't even bother to fill it out because the whole thing annoyed me so much.  I think the general rule is that the more prestigious the school, the more strict they are.  It especially doesn't make sense if you are above the age that you can be legally declared dependent on a tax return because the legal limit on a gift is $9999 so they're obviously not going to want to fork over $50K, nor are they going to want to cosign on a loan if you can very well qualify to get it on your own.

So what amuses me is that my dad keeps asking me about scholarship money.  He'll say, "so are you getting any scholarship money?" to which I will reply "I won't know that until after I am accepted!" (the exclamation point is because I have had to answer that same question several times so far).  I wonder what he will say when I tell him that his refusal to provide his tax information will result in me not getting any scholarship money at several schools.  Still, it doesn't seem fair to those kids whose parents are alive and well and are just complete fillintheblanks.  Although, life isn't fair so it seems that this financial dilemma is just another part of life.

i keep telling myself that the reason these schools are crazy about parental info is really just to keep the grants away from the rich snotty kids who have parents pay for everything. of course, in the process they screw us as well.

Right, because if your parents won't give out their info, it must be because you are "estranged" from them, not because they are just paranoid.  So, either your parents have disowned you, or they are paying for everything.  Those of us that get lost in the middle (most of us I would guess) are just SOL.

Does your father know that you will not get any money from several schools because he is paranoid?

Not yet, I am comtemplating how to include the "if you are estranged from your parents part" just to make him more paranoid (but in the opposite direction - as in "Well Dad, I guess we're just going to have to become 'estranged' then, it was nice knowing you...").
