This happened 8 years ago, and they are both denying it. You gotta admit the timing was quite suspect.

Edit: I'm not a big McCain guy btw.

Double Edit: Half sarcasm, half- sketchy timing

Supposedly the NY Times "knew for months" that they were going to make this a story.  So what's troubling is that they made him their guy.  AFTER they knew of this story.  Something's fishy.

Not at all a McCain fan.  Not even a little.

I don't think so, not really.  It's journalism - if the story was there they'd likely do it to any candidate.  If the NYT really wanted to screw him, it seems like they'd have released this when Romney still had a chance.

Whoever tacked that onto the end - my hat's off to you.

Agreed -- though I personally was intrigued right from the beginning as I've seen a lot of political scandals begin with just this kind of mild story.  We shall see!

I'm watching it.

We'll see where it goes.

I'm pretending they aren't there, for what it's worth.

I guess for me, with the Keating thing, it just seemed like a bit of a rehash, you know?  Though the ladyfriend lobbyist was interesting.  Not like Ted Haggard interesting, but still.

I think Phishy's point -- to which I give a bit of credit -- is not that the Times is out to ruin McCain, but that it's out to leave the Republicans without a nominee.  By endorsing McCain when they knew this story was in the works, they may have been hoping for the Republicans to coronate him as the presumptive nominee and then take him out, destabilizing the party.  I don't buy that the Times editorial board is so partisan, but it's definitely a bit suspicious that they endorsed McCain knowing full well that he had this vulnerability.

They're "holla!"-ing right now, but you never know.
