crap, i just looked at the email again and realized that those classes are on wednesday, not thursday.  maybe i'll have to ditch work on wednesday after all!  i really, really want to sit in on some classes to get a feel for what it's like.  my boss will be unhappy, but what else is new, really?

I'm still debating about whether to go to Columbia or not. We'd be coming from out of state (and don't know anyone in NYC) and wouldn't be eligible for the subsidized housing offered by the school (because we have 3 pets that we can't leave behind). Does anyone have any general advice on off-campus housing? Do most landlords have income requirements, even for students? About what percentage of apartments allow pets? How long will it take to find a place and where would be our best bet?
Thanks.

Kami- you and I are in a very similar position!  I would love any info if you've found any.  This is one hesitancy I have with CLS, I feel comfortable with finding off-campus housing at other schools, but not really with CLS.  Any help?

Does anyone know about the safety of 125th street?  I've heard that 125th is basically the border, i.e. where the danger starts... and it'd be nice to know how safe I'd be if I went up there by myself in the daytime.  Thanks for any info!

P.S.  Is there a yahoo group or anything like that for Columbia admits?  All I know of is the admitted students website.

Going up to 125th in the day time is no problem at all. It's safe, if not very pretty. At night, I would recommend not to, just because there aren't as many students walking around. But there is this place that serves nice burgers called "Toast" up there, and student go there late at night too so.....

I wanted to tag this thread.  I'm not applying until next cycle but I am somewhat likely to end up at Columbia.  I'm visiting NYC in December and I'm very excited to see it!  I've never been.  I have also been very interested to see as much of Lenfest as I could.  It sounds great.  Does anyone know if there is a much higher demand for apartments in Lenfest than there is availability?

Dominique... I asked this very question to the law school housing director at Columbia about two months ago.  I still have not received a response.

Has anyone else had a terrible time trying to get ahold of the law school?  Does anyone have any anecdotes they can share that counters my own bad experiences?  I've tried contacting other key offices (e.g. the career services office) with no response.  I REALLY love everything else about Columbia but this whole unfeeling administration bit is a pretty big turn off.

I'm leaning towards Columbia as well, though I'm still waiting for my financial aid letter, my other option is umich w/10k/year, so we'll see...

I did turn in the housing application though, i'm hoping i'll get an apartment share, don't really care where, but definitely don't want Lenfest or any other of the $1200+/month apartments...

as far as my experience contacting them, i've only had contact with their finaid office, and they've been pretty slow responding, but they respond which is more than I can say for some other schools...

I'll be at Columbia in the fall.  I currently live on the Upper West Side near the school -- it's a great neighborhood.  I'm originally from Florida.

Hi, I'll be going to Columbia. What housing options look best to the other folks here? I saw Lenfest when I visited and the studio looked great but expensive. Some current students have told me that the residence on 115th is a lot better. Thoughts? How are you ranking your prefs?

okay so after getting their generous finaid i signed up for Columbia!  it seems like there aren't that many of us...the harvard peeps have five pages worth of discussion...so anyone who has visited, which I didn't, please do share more housing info or anything else that may be helpful!
