I'm about to sign up for Vonage, and if you have it you know that you can get a referral bonus.  Let me know if you to refer me.  Send me a note.

Just make sure you have a fat ass pipe (bandwidth), and a router that can do QoS on packets (Quality of Service).  VOIP can become bad, depending on your connection (dsl/cable), because the packets get delayed/dropped, if you're downloading a large file during VOIP telephone conversations.

I'd get VOIP but my broadband is very unreliable.

Sorry - I already signed up.  I ended up with Broadvox (okay - has anyone else noticed how cheesy these names are?).  I still think Vonage is probably the best, but they didn't have any 617 numbers!  I tried to keep my current 617 number (which I'd sooner give up because it's tainted by telemarketers) but Vonage wouldn't do it until 20 days after I officially cancel my DSL - leaving a big gap in phone service.

I almost did VoicePulse (which would have saved my the $30 setup fee), but they don't have 911 access and I had visions of a 60 minutes episode: "if only he could have called 911".  Plus they have one of those annoying overly happy "you've solved all my problems" pictures of someone looking way way up at the camera (compare: voicepulse with my own modeling career).
