How would you describe the general vibe on campus?  I realize there probably isn't a "typical" Tulane student but if you had to describe, how would you?  Does the social life revolve around drinking or are there other things to do in NOLA?  Where is Tulane (both professors and students) politically?

I coined the term laid-back gunner as a joke in describing the student body, but it actually fits very well.  Everyone is certainly working very hard, but the student body takes every chance to relax and enjoy themselves.  The student body is also remarkably helpful and I have yet to meet an overly competitive person.  The social life doesn't revolve around drinking, but it is definitely a pretty big part of it.  The food is spectacular, there is live music everywhere, and the city just oozes personality.  Uptown is also pretty active and there are quite a few good jogging/biking routes if that is your sort of thing.  There is something for everybody, but the town specializes in eats, drinks, and music.  The law school is more liberal than not, but its certainly not strongly one way.

1. Did you get any $$$ from Tulane?  If so, how much and what were your stats?  If not, how much debt are you expecting to have when you graduate?

2. How competitive is the student body?  I read the "laid-back gunner" explanation, but do students steal syllabi or attempt to undermine other students in other ways?  Are grades posted anonymously?

3. How far away from the night-life stuff is the campus area?  Does one need to drive to go out to the fun areas or are they within walking distance?
In:  UF, Tulane, FSU($), Miami($$$), Stetson, Oregon($)
Out: Washington and Lee
W/L: Arizona
Decision: UF c/o 2011!

I received 20k per year with a 3.45/164.  I have been told that those same numbers will receive between 10k and 20k this year.

Not competitive at all.  No one would ever steal anything.  Tulane students want to succeed but I have yet to meet one that would do it at the expense of another.  NOLA's friendly atmosphere transfers right over to the law school.

You will live close to a few bars and restaurants but there are so many fantastic restaurants/bars that you will want a car to go check out what is not within walking distance.  For example, I live on the Carrollton side of uptown and I have probably 25 bars/restaurants within walking distance, but sometimes I want to go to Magazine street or the French quarter - I drive/cab over on these occasions.

Hey Truth, where did you go to highschool?  I'm from New Orleans too and I was at Tulane before I transferred to Loyola.

What's up, y'all..  I'm a 1L as well, so I'll drop by to answer some questions.  Anything to do a little more procrastination on Crim Law...

1. Yeah, I received $$.  PM me if you want specific details on money or stats.  I'm paranoid in my old age.  Debt's going to be pretty nasty, but I charted it out and with the money they are giving me, it wasn't any worse than other schools I was accepted to.

2.  Haha..  stealing syllabi..  haha..  no way.  The students definetly work hard, but if you need some help, people are more than happy to help you out.  No undermining involved.  I think the students are my fav part about Tulane so far.  Everyone is very laid-back, but they know what it takes to work hard and get the job done as well.

3.  You can get to night-life by walking anywhere in uptown.  It's integrated throughout the campus area.

If anyone has any more questions, keep posting on here or PM me.  ;D

Is everyone at Tulane aiming for Biglaw?  I'm kind of interested in JAG or becoming a prosecutor so my main concern with Tulane is the cost.  I'm also kind of curious about Admiralty law.  Does anyone have friends who are concentrating in that?  Do they like it and what are their career prospects?

0Ls focus on getting BIGLAW.  I think most people in the top half are going to look at BIGLAW and probably see what they could get, but I don't think too many students are really aiming for it.  I find most people just want interesting, gainful employment - and BIGLAW doesn't always bring both of these.

I am 99% doing JAG.  I don't know if I would be doing JAG if I didn't have the scholarship I have.

I might actually focus on Admiralty Law.  Job prospects for admiralty law are very good, you just have to get your name out there.  Obviously all good admiralty work is on a coast though, and these locations come with some high costs of living, etc.

Thanks for all the information.  I'm going to apply.  Whether I go there or not will depend on $$ and where else I get in but I think I'd be happy there.

Placement in NYC?  Is NOLA as dirty as I hear?  Scholarship for 4.0/160?

I am assuming you are from NYC or at least want to be there...

Tulane places well in NYC given its location, but not as well as Fordham.
NYC and NOLA are both dirty in their own ways, NOLA is not a clean cut city, but a lot of its charm comes from this "dirtiness".
Scholarship is certainly possible, and maybe even likely.  I would retake with such a GPA, but thats me.

Edit: Scholarship would be in the 5k-20k range if admissions are similar to last year.
