It was a dark and stormy night. Suddenly, a shot rang out.

Nope. That's not it. Hang on...

OK, here we go. My whirlwind tour of the eastern United States has officially commenced. I am sitting in the Homestead Suites of Jacksonville, Florida right now. It's not like some of the other suite-type hotels I've seen. There's no pool, no concierge, and no room service. There is a fat English lady working the front desk and it smells like oranges in here. Must be Florida. I've never been here. Does the whole state smell like oranges? I'm not sure.

I arrived here this morning from Houston just in time for a thunderstorm. We got to fly right through it, which was very special until they took away my coffee. They said I would spill it. I told them we had never even met. They said they knew anyway. So, it's been dreary and rainy here all day...it's just like Houston is every day, except that it isn't 125 degrees, too.

I found Florida Coastal School of Law without any difficulty. They seemed surprised that I was there even though I had set this visit up two weeks ago. Maybe it was just me. There was, by happenstance, a tour in progress, so I joined it in the library. First, the place is just like the pictures show it. It's a set of two large office buildings that have been converted into the school. They told us the move into new digs would likely happen in Fall of 2007. They are currently surveying three locations for it.

Now I'm not uppity or pretentious by any means (I'm staying in a Homestead Suites) but I was not impressed with the place. The people were somewhat friendly--the head librarian was very informative and they do have an impressive library. It just seemed...strange. I didn't feel like I was in an institution of higher learning when I was there. I can't explain it...it might have been the drool.

The classrooms were standard, the seating was uncomfortable, and the moot courtroom was in use so I couldn't see it. They claim to have a "student-centered focus" and an "open-door policy" and a lot of other buzzwords like synergy and thinking outside the box. I like buzzwords. I was hoping they would tell me they were going to run an idea up the flagpole and see who salutes it, but they didn't. They wanted me to go to some leasing office after my tour so they could put the hard sell on me some more. I told them I would go, but I didn't. I drove to the beach because I had never seen the Atlantic up close. It looks like all the other oceans I've ever seen, and it was raining, so I went and ate a gyro for lunch.

It was a great gyro. The flatbread was warm and chewy and the lamb was tender and tasty. I love that cucumber sauce they put on those things. It's called paparazzi or nefertiti or something like that. It's good. They also had some seasoned fries that went with it. That was tasty, too. I drank a cup of coffee with two creams (no sugar...it's bad for you and it isn't the Guam way) and came to my hotel.

Tomorrow I drive to Miami and visit St. Thomas University, then fly out that evening to New Hampshire for Pierce's open house. If you have any questions, please post them so I can make fun of you.

I'm On the Road.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your trip. I think the weather is supposed to be perfect this weekend. Too bad you are here for this stormy weather. Though if you plan to live in Florida, get used to the rain. It comes every day about 3-5 p.m. from June-September. Anyway, happy trails! ;D Good luck in Miami.

Lane,

It's called tzatziki sauce. mmmmmm.... Have you ever had a doner kebap?  They're Turkish gyros.  I like them even better than gyros.  Do your hands smell like lamb now?  That's the only drawback.  You smell like seasoned meat for days after a good doner.

BTW, "the moot court room is in use" is code for "we don't have a moot court room and this is just a broom closet."

I thought so when a janitor walked out, but they assured me he was just acting as a witness in the trial.

I have lamb hands. And man hands. Lamb man hands.
